Cooking and Food Skills for Beginners MH Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can cook meals for yourself with Cooking Ingredients by using the Portable BBQ Grill out in the field or via the BBQ Menu in your tent. This is a new feature that can easily be missed by beginners, but it's very important to understand the basics of Cooking Meals and Food Skills, and why it's so good at all levels.

When consuming a Meal in Monster Hunter Wilds, it will increase your stats such as Health, Stamina, Attack, Elemental Resistances, and others. The effects and the duration of the meal will depend on the ingredients you used. Preparing a complete meal will require 3 different Cooking Ingredients made up of Ration, Additional Ingredients, and Finishing Touches. These are all materials that you can gather from the world, or by trading with NPCs.

The Ration is the easiest one to gather and you can also receive this ingredient from the Palico in charge of the Ingredient Center. You can use Meat, Fish, or Veggies. When using any type of ration, you will get the following benefits:

  • Duration: 30 min
  • Health + 50
  • Stamina + 150

Meat gives Attack +2, Fish gives Defense +4, and Veggies will give you a combination of +2 Defense and +3 Elemental Resistance. To continue preparing your meal, you can add Additional Ingredients, which will add 20 Minutes to your meal effect and will activate one Food Skill. You can top off your meal with the Finishing Touches to activate another Food Skill. Food Skills in Monster Hunter Wilds can range from damage reduction, faint protection, attack boost, extra carves, and other effects. The good thing in Monster Hunter Wilds, meal effects continue to persist even after you faint, unlike in the older MH Titles. This means that Food Skills are now strictly time-based, and the timer is paused while you are in the Base Camp, so you don't have to worry about rushing into hunts.

To get Cooking Ingredients, you need to progress the stories of each tribe in different regions. Then new trade options will appear and allow you to offer them special items in exchange for Ingredients. You can also acquire ingredients from quest rewards. (Note, some gears with Geologist skill can help you farm the special items.)

Roles and Units in the Guild Expedition

Each Expedition Unit comprises a Hunter, a Handler, a Smithy, and a Palico (companion). Each member of the team fulfills essential duties:

  • Hunter: Equipped to wield weapons and tasked with hunting monsters.
  • Alma (Handler): Manages quests, authorizes hunts, and provides guidance.
  • Gemma (Smithy): Utilizes monster materials to forge equipment.
  • Palico: A versatile companion that offers combat support.

Together, these units work under the Guild's command to ensure the expedition's success. Avis Unit, our base unit, collaborates with other units like Astram Unit for mission completion.

Palico Companion

The Palico companion, a loyal feline ally that supports hunters in numerous ways. Palicoes play supportive roles such as healing, attacking monsters, and using special gadgets that can provide tactical advantages like traps and buffs. Players can customize their Palicoes with different armor and weapons, which not only change their appearance but also enhance their abilities in combat.

Palico Customization
palico customization mh wilds wiki guide 600px

Palicoes have 5 specializations that give them specific support moves:

  • Healer - A support type that focuses on recovery moves. Uses healing to keep hunters in tip-top fighting shape.
  • Assist - A support type that's ready to assist. Places traps to weaken monsters and set up advantageous situations.
  • Fight - A support type that focuses on combat. Can become fur-ious, boosting its own attack and making it a fantastic fighting furball.
  • Bombardier - A support type with a penchant for blowing things up. Has high explosive power and can handle large bombs.
  • Gathering - A support type that can sniff out valuables. Highly suited to pilfering items and collecting quality materials.

Gathering Materials and the Fireflies

Gathering Materials is an important part of progression in MH Wilds. Whether you're on a quest, doing side missions, or exploring, there are a number of Materials and Ingredients that you can come across. Take note of where the Fireflies (the tracker) goes to. It leads you to where materials are and you can also see the Icons of Materials on your mini map (lower left edge of the screen). When you collect an item, you can open the Map Overlay to show the Timer on the Ingredient. This indicates the remaining time until the Item can be gathered again.

new player help info mh wilds wiki guide 1

Make sure to pay attention to the materials appearing on the left side of your screen, too. This indicates the Materials that you can collect nearby, and are being highlighted by the Fireflies. Beware of the pouch capacity as there's a limit to how many items you can carry with you. Luckily, there are items that you can craft on the go. For example, the Herb can be automatically crafted into a Potion, a consumable that heals the Hunter for 35 Health Points.

About Supply Items

Supply Items are automatically restocked when you begin a quest. There are some items that are marked as quest supplies, which indicate that they are to be used only during a specific quest. These items must be returned when the quest ends.

Creating Lobbies, Multiplayer, and SOS Flare

The game offers robust support through Multiplayer Mode and Hunter NPC Assistance.

Multiplayer Mode: Join Forces with Other Hunters

The Multiplayer Mode in Monster Hunter Wilds lets players team up with other hunters online, enhancing the game’s cooperative and strategic aspects. Here’s how it works:

  • SOS Flare System: If you’re facing a particularly tough monster, you can send out an SOS flare to call for help. Other players around the world can respond to your signal, joining your hunt and helping you turn the tide in battle. Hunting parties consist of 4 members, so up to 3 other players may join.

SOS Flare in Monster Hunter Wilds

  • Up to Four Players per Hunt: Multiplayer hunts support up to four hunters, each bringing their unique weapons, skills, and strategies to the group. This teamwork allows players to coordinate attacks, set traps, and manage distractions, making hunts smoother and more efficient.
  • Support Hunters: The SOS Flares prioritizes players. While you're waiting for other plays to join you, support hunters can appear in your world and join your party. They are other units of the expedition team and they can help you on your hunts until other players join you.
  • Role Specialization and Team Strategy: In a team, hunters can take on specialized roles. For example, one player might focus on heavy damage, while another uses support items or traps. This strategy enables players to exploit monster weaknesses more effectively and respond to dangerous attacks with greater control.
  • Shared Rewards and Carving Opportunities: After a successful hunt, all players share the rewards, including valuable monster materials for crafting. Working as a team doesn’t reduce individual rewards; rather, it allows hunters to share in the spoils and use them for equipment upgrades.

The Quest Counter in MH Wilds

new player help info mh wilds wiki guide 5

The Quest Counter can be accessed by talking to Alma, the Handler. On this menu, you can view your Quest Settings, Post Quests, or Join Quests of other players, or members of your Party. Here are some of the Quest types that you will see:

  • Assignments - These are quests required to progress the Main Story of Monster Hunter Wilds. This allows you to not only experience the narrative but also gain access to different and stronger monsters. These are one-time quests and cannot be repeated.
  • Optional Quests - These are quests that is not essential to the completion of the game. These are unlocked through progression or by talking to NPCs, or when you reach certain conditions of the game. These quests can be repeatedly posted.
  • Event Quests - These are special quests that become available during a specific timeframe and provides unique rewards that cannot be obtained by other means. These quests may be repeated, as long as the Event is ongoing.
  • Side Missions - These are missions and requests from NPCs that are carried out by the Hunter. You can talk to people in each region to hear their requests. This feature is unlocked after you hunt the Congalala (Main Quest: Forest Findings.)
  • Main Missions - These are missions that guide the Hunter where to go next and progresses the narrative of Monster Hunter Wilds. It is different from Assignments, which typically consist of hunting a Monster. Main Missions often have a long cutscene that takes the players through the stories and locale where they are stationed.

The Slinger

new player help info mh wilds wiki guide 9

The Slinger is a combat mechanic that allows the Hunter to fire at targets using a Slinger Ammo. It can also be aimed at various targets such as Falling Boulders to make them fall, or Monsters to damage them. The Slinger can also be aimed and fired while riding the Seikret. You can also use the Slinger to fire Throwing Knives, The Capture Net, Paint Pods (marks your target), and gather materials.

Base Camp Operations and Pop Up Camps

Base Camp: The hub for crafting, resupplying, and strategizing.

Pop-Up Camps: These serve as temporary fast-travel waypoints and supply stations, but are vulnerable to monster attacks. This Pop-Up Camp is unlocked after Drive Off the Congalala!

A Pop-Up Camp is a new feature introduced in MH Wilds that lets hunters build a camp on-the-go. The Pop-Up camp is a smaller version of the Base Camp where they can access their private tents to manage their equipment, restock items, and fast travel. In contrast, a Base Camp is established by the Guild and contains all the facilities a hunter will need and houses merchants that can be interacted with. A Pop-Up camp also function as the respawn point should a hunter faint on the field. The hunter will be taken to the closest camp, regardless of the type.

More About Pop-Up Camps

  • Maximum Camps: 4 at a time
  • Location: Designated zones per region
  • Requirements: Camping Kit, Points to set up camp (varies from 100 - 200 Points)
  • Pop-Up Camp Effects: Enterting the tent will fully restore the Hunter and Palico's health and remove all abnormal statuses. If the hunter is using a melee weapon, the Sharpness will also be fully restored.

Fast Travel in MH Wilds

Fast Travel is a feature that lets you travel quickly from one location to another. View the World Map and press the Fast Travel icon to instantly go there. You can also select a destination from the Fast Travel List. The accessible locations will grow as you travel to more places. Fast Travel may be limited during active quests, but you can still travel from Pop-Up Camps and to Base Camp.

Important NPCs in The Base Camp

Exploring the Windward Plains

The Windward Plains serve as the initial base in the Forbidden Lands. Characterized by dynamic weather, this area demands that hunters stay alert to the seasonal changes in both environment and monster behavior. The ecosystem adapts with every shift, from the Sand Tide (a storm that summons thunder and lightning) to periods of abundance and resource scarcity.

Hunters must adapt to each monster’s unique abilities and anticipate their attacks based on behavioral patterns.

The Seikret: Mount, Tracker, and Tactical Escape

The Seikret is a vital part of your hunting kit in Monster Hunter Wilds, combining a unique mount and tracking system that offers hunters greater mobility, enhanced exploration, and strategic advantages during hunts. The Seikret enhances combat by allowing

Hunters to use weapons while mounted, and support jump attacks with melee weapons. Seikret feature a weapon sling for switching between two equipped weapons during combat

seikret monster hunter wilds wiki guide 600px

While riding the Seikret, players can also attack while Riding, or do a Dismount Attack. The Riding Attack allows the Hunter to stay on the back of the Seikret as they attack their target (think horseback riding but Seikret edition). On the other hand, Dismount Attack allows the Hunter to get off the back of the Seikret, and jump forward into battle. Here are actions that you can do while riding your Seikret:

  • Speed Up
  • Sprint
  • Slow Down
  • Stop
  • Aim Slinger
  • Dismount
  • Fire Slinger
  • Hook Slinger
  • Auto-Move

If the Seikret is far away from you and you need a quick escape, you can call the Seikret to come to you in accessible areas. At the start, you can borrow it and use it for a bit. You can fully unlock it after you hunt the Quematrice in Quest: Village of Whispering Winds.

Setting Up Your Quick Actions, Gestures, and Shortcuts

You can go to the Menu to customize your Quick Actions menu. This is a set of actions that you can perform quickly and you can set a different ones when hunting.

About the Handler in MH Wilds

The Handler in MH Wilds is called Alma. She serves as your guide and holds the key to progressing the Main Story, navigating the Forbidden Lands, and accessing different Quest Types in the game. You can find her in the Base Camp, Pop-Up Camps, or she can also be traveling with you. When you talk to her, you can access the Quest Board and choose from options available to you. You can progress the Main Story, go on Investigations, or do Optional and Event Quests.

Unlocking Optional Quests: After hunting a monster, you can hunt it again anytime by taking Optional Quests. These quests are the perfect opportunity to gather materials that can be used for Forging and Upgrading Palico and Hunter Equipment.

Palico Equipment

new player help info mh wilds wiki guide 10

Your Palico is one of your buddies-in-hunting. They can give the best assist and offer a lot of help in many forms, like Healing, Supporting, and even Damaging monsters. This is why it's important to Forge and Upgrade your Palico's Equipment too. Visit the Smithy at the Base Camp and you can see the available selection. Take note that this list will grow as you hunt more monsters, so make sure to check back often. The Palico Equipment is composed of 3 Items:

  • Weapon
  • Head Armor
  • Chest Armor

Just like the Hunter's equipment, it also requires Zenny and some Materials to Forge. Their equipment requires a lot less material and they're super affordable to make.

Weapon Choices and Combat Strategy

Hunters can choose from 14 Weapon types, suited to various playstyles. From close-range powerhouses to long-distance attackers, each weapon enables unique combat strategies. Additionally, using tools like shock traps and barrel bombs, as well as interacting with the environment, is crucial for maximizing combat efficiency.

Ask your Handler for help to find the best Weapon Type

Consider Your Playstyle

  • Close-Combat Lover: If you like to be in the monster’s face, look for heavy melee weapons like the Great Sword or Hammer. These weapons hit hard and can knock down monsters with powerful, deliberate attacks.
  • Quick and Agile: If you prefer speed and dodging, try something like the Dual Blades or Insect Glaive. These weapons offer fast, rapid attacks, allowing you to stay mobile and avoid damage.
  • Keep Your Distance: Ranged weapons like the Bow or Light Bowgun are perfect for players who want to fight from afar. They allow you to stay out of the monster's reach while still dishing out damage.
  • Balanced Defense and Offense: The Sword & Shield or Lance are great if you want a balance between offense and defense. These weapons allow you to block and counter while staying close enough to strike when the opportunity arises.

Upgrade and Forge Equipment at the Smithy

The Smithy is part of the Guild Expedition and provides the services of Forging and Upgrading Hunter and Palico equipment. If you have the right materials, you can visit the Smithy to get the Equipment that matches your playstyle, or the one that will help you perform better in hunts. Wearing the right set of equipment is just as important as understanding the monster that you will be hunting. At the Smithy, you can preview the armor and weapon on your character, as well as the Defense Status that you will be getting. When it comes to forging Weapons, there's a Weapon Tree that outlines the available Upgrades.

new player help info mh wilds wiki guide 2

Once you have forged an armor or weapon, you can move on to upgrading each piece. Upgrading requires Materials and Points and the cost generally goes higher as your Armor increases in Level. The Weapon upgrades generally cost more and require more materials compared to Armor pieces.

defense combat info monster hunter wilds wiki guide 1

It is important to note that your Smithy's collection will expand as you hunt new monsters. Make sure to come back often and see the latest additions (based on your personal progress). The Smithy can also craft Talismans later on after you hunt the Rompopolo.

Smithy Recommendation

Monster Hunter Wilds has a new feature where the Smithy can give you recommendations on Equipment that is based on your current progress. When you're unsure, come check out the Recommended Equipment from Gemma the Smithy. If ever you see an equipment that you want to have, but you lack the Materials for, the Smithy has an option where you can add an item to your Wishlist. The Wishlist feature lets you track the missing materials and tells you how much more you need to get a piece of equipment crafted.
