Most game marketing orgs are running fundamentally blind during the period that matters most. Pre-launch is when you're spending against a conversion that doesn't exist yet. The natural instinct is to defer measurement until launch — but that means you're optimizing campaigns without signal for weeks, then trying to retroactively attribute a day-one spike to something. The structural problem: Steam's UTM attribution captures less than 10% of traffic. If your entire pre-launch measurement strategy is "we'll look at the Steam dashboard," you're working from a really small sample that's hard to extrapolate from. What actually works: instrument your landing page to fire on intent events — wishlist clicks, newsletter signups, trailer completions. These are real-time, channel-attributable, and serve as a leading signal you can act on before Steam syncs anything. If you have Early Access, you can run full attribution through it. Players from Alpha who churn and reactivate at launch are attributable — most teams don't realize this. Attribution window configuration is also worth getting right before you spend, not after. Standard windows are 7-14 days click, 1 day view. Extended windows might look clever going in, but they create an attribution mess on the other side. The measurement infrastructure for pre-launch exists. Most teams just haven't set it up. Gamesight supports these kinds of pre-launch events and more.
