Roberto Musso ha condiviso questo elementoNDI is often described as an AV-over-IP technology. That description is not wrong. It is simply incomplete. NDI is a connectivity technology. It connects devices and software applications, allows them to discover one another, and enables them to exchange data. That data can, of course, be video and audio. But metadata may be the most powerful and versatile part of the connection. Metadata can communicate status, carry commands, trigger actions, and coordinate systems. In other words, NDI can connect much more than media. It can connect workflows. Today, we are sharing two MIT-licensed repositories that demonstrate this potential: 👉 NDI GPIO Panel https://lnkd.in/dsipsvNY 👉 CHAT over NDI https://lnkd.in/dgSEjmBV NDI GPIO Panel sends and receives eight GPIO channels using structured XML metadata. The application is useful, but it is only one implementation. The more important contribution is the documented metadata specification. Other developers can implement the same format in completely different applications. For example, a bridge could translate NDI GPIO metadata into commands for devices that do not support NDI natively, such as Shelly devices, Modbus equipment, relay controllers, or other automation systems. Those devices do not need to understand NDI themselves. They only need an application that can translate between the two worlds. CHAT over NDI applies the same principle to bidirectional text communication. It defines a metadata format for sessions, participants, directed messages, priorities, replies, and acknowledgements. The reference application presents it as chat, but the same standard could be implemented in operator panels, production systems, logging tools, overlays, or automation software. These repositories demonstrate the versatility of NDI metadata, but they also highlight something important: Flexibility alone does not create interoperability. Interoperability begins when the community agrees on what the metadata means. Roberto Musso ha condiviso questo elementoWhat if the next generation of NDI developers starts not by learning to code, but by explaining an idea to AI? I wanted to test that question, not just write about it. So I built an NDI intercom application with AI. Today, we are releasing the complete source code under the MIT License: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dREBei_v This is not a “Hello World” demo. The repository contains a working NDI intercom reference application with: • 16-channel and compact 2-channel versions • NDI audio send, receive, and discovery • Windows desktop and Linux headless builds • Web UI and REST API • ASIO support on Windows • Stream Deck integration But the application itself is only part of the story. The more important point is how it was created. NDI has an accessible SDK, clear concepts, documentation, and practical examples. AI coding tools can work with those resources, helping translate domain knowledge into an implementation. That changes who can begin developing with NDI. Someone like me, who understands broadcast, AV, and live production but would never have started a software project alone, can now describe a problem, explore a solution, and build a working application. It does not mean that engineering, testing or expertise are no longer necessary. Reliable software still demands all three. It means the barrier to entry has moved. More people can experiment and prototype. More specific problems can be addressed. More ideas can become software. This repository is our contribution to that process, but it is not only a resource for developers. NDI Intercom is also something we are genuinely happy to share with the NDI community as a ready-to-use application. A Windows installer is available, so anyone can download it, install it, and start using it immediately. Use it in your workflow. Study the source. Fork it, improve it, adapt it, and build something we have not imagined yet. AI is not just becoming part of NDI applications. AI is learning how to build them. It’s hard to believe, but NDI has been around for 10 years now and has made tremendous advances from its humble beginnings as an 8-bit video format. NDI adoption for broadcast applications really took off in 2019 with the introduction of 10-bit support and has continued to grow with 4K and HDR support. Even with all of these advances, we sometimes get the question “Is NDI video quality REALLY good enough for my high value content?” To answer this question, we compared NDI quality to JPEG-XS which is arguably the gold standard in live production codecs. Roberto Musso ha condiviso questo elementoI read with great interest the AWS benchmark comparing NDI SpeedHQ and JPEG XS. The results are nuanced: NDI SpeedHQ performs slightly better at lower bitrates, while JPEG XS can reach higher absolute quality at higher bitrates. Both show very limited generational quality loss. That is exactly why a benchmark should be the beginning of the discussion, not the end. Choosing a codec is not simply a matter of selecting the highest point on a chart. A codec must solve a real workflow problem. Before replacing an established technology, we should ask what the new codec changes for the complete product, not only for image quality. What does it cost to license and implement? Can it run efficiently in software? How many streams can be processed on a standard computer, a cloud instance, or a small ARM-based system? Does real-time operation require an FPGA, ASIC, or other dedicated hardware? What vendor dependencies does it introduce? If adopting a codec requires both licensing the technology and buying specific hardware, we are not adopting only a compression format. We are adopting an entire technological and economic chain that may define the cost and architecture of a product for years. This is not an argument against any specific codec. Different technologies can be the right choice for different requirements. But an established codec should not be considered obsolete simply because a newer one exists. If it continues to provide competitive quality, predictable performance, efficient software implementation, and broad accessibility, replacing it should solve a clear workflow problem. The direction I believe in is software-defined media. I want to use the computing power already available in a PC, a cloud server, or a small ARM platform. Hardware acceleration is valuable when it is widely available and controlled by software. The problem begins when acceleration is no longer an option, but a requirement imposed by the codec. Software-defined does not mean eliminating hardware. It means preventing hardware from determining what a product can do and what it may become. Ultimately, viewers do not know which codec was used. Producers want quality, reliability, and sustainable costs. Operators want systems that are easy to configure, control, and monitor. Integrators want interoperability and freedom of choice. A benchmark can tell us how codecs perform. It cannot, by itself, tell us which codec creates the better product. The workflow should not adapt to the codec. Knowing who designed her makes her story even more special. I bought In Fila Per Tre 27 years ago, and since then she has given us countless unforgettable moments. We have sailed, struggled, laughed, learned, and, above all, had an incredible amount of fun together. She is not an easy boat. She is demanding, complex, sometimes unforgiving, and always requires attention, sensitivity, and commitment. But this is exactly what makes sailing her so rewarding. After 40 years, she remains a true jewel: elegant, full of character, and still capable of delivering extraordinary performances and emotions every time we take her out. But much of our work happens in groups. Some people join from a hot desk. Some from home. Some from another office. And some sit together in a meeting room. The data shows AI moving from individual productivity to collective intelligence. In an AI-powered meeting room, technology can: • identify who is speaking • capture decisions and action items • create summaries for people who could not attend • make the room itself part of the Copilot experience This is bigger than better video conferencing. It means the knowledge created in a room no longer disappears when the meeting ends. And everyone can participate, regardless of where they sit. The future of AI at work will not only be personal. Il giornalista smette di fare domande scomode o inchieste, iniziando a rincorrere titoli e click. Il pubblico smette d’interpretare e inizia a consumare ciecamente o a seguire mostri medievali che negano scienza e progresso. Poi ci stupiamo se vince la banalità dei contenuti, se troviamo errori macroscopici nei comunicati stampa o negli articoli o se gli ignoranti vengono idolatrati. This provides a way for me to control my models and have an inexpensive platform for chatbots and agent workers. The benefit of using the ~$70 Arduino platform instead of expensive and hard to get Mac Mini is that I can build on the communities base of Debian and Arduino with agent skills. I can connect any of the varied Arduino hats to expand physical functionality. Currently I have them deployed in 5 unique environments and they each carry a different persona and set of skills. Zixi as a platform for video transport is an all powerful solution. I am not in Amsterdam this week but even from a distance the momentum of IBC - International Broadcasting Convention ’s second day is hard to miss. Emerging themes are loud and clear. AI powered personalization and metadata enrichment are reshaping broadcast workflows. Cloud native gateways and smarter delivery networks are pushing IP production and distribution into new territory. Dynamic HDR conversion and 5G over broadcast experiments hint at more flexible higher quality viewing experiences. Studio robotics and automation are showing how leaner teams can do more without sacrificing quality. Beyond the show floor real time voice technology and advanced dubbing platforms are maturing quickly. Captions to dubbing pipelines accent nuance controls and fair compensation frameworks for talent are changing how localization will be done at scale. Behind the scenes asset intelligence tools are quietly making inventory licensing and maintenance smarter which are critical foundations for any studio or integrator preparing to scale. For broadcasters and dubbing studios in Africa these are not distant curiosities. They are signals pointing to where audiences workflows and cost structures are heading.
