You get a founder who does not flinch when a Goliath enters the market, who fights only on his own terms, and who puts character before cash even when cash is the easier choice. That is Karthik Venkateswaran, co-founder of Jumbotail, who joined me for this episode of Leaders Lab. I first invested in S.Karthik Venkateswaran and Ashish Jhina back in 2016, as young founders of Jumbotail. They had maybe 300 stores using their app at that time. I was struck by their idealism, courage to do things differently and their commitment to an end goal despite the odds and naysayers. Today Jumbotail is a unicorn and the rails for over 400,000 kirana stores across India. But the numbers aren't what made the chat special. Before Stanford University, before eBay, Flipkart, and co-founding Jumbotail in 2015, Karthik spent ten years as a Major in the Indian Army, posted across some of the toughest terrain in the country. He brought to Jumbotail the rigor and and discipline of that training. The refusal to get cowed by a competitor with unlimited capital, burn money in a fight to the bottom. Jumbotail stood for something and fought the war on its terms. Ashish and Karthik took on near impossible odds. They have been through several near death moments and emerged stronger each time. And through all of it, one principle held. As he put it, we as a company always set character before cash. Some of the conversation areas that stood out - Why a 2% margin business can beat a 35% one - "Middle India": too rich for subsidies, too poor for convenience - The platform: 400,000 stores, grocery, lifestyle, fintech, J24 - Zero SKU overlap: why kirana and quick commerce serve different Indias - Udaan, Reliance, and facing a Goliath with unlimited money But the moment that broke through for me was not about strategy at all. Karthik spoke about a team member who caught COVID during the worst of the pandemic and was in a hospital bed. Even then, this young man was thinking about the company, and about seeing through the thousand-store journey. While all companies talk about culture its hard to build and sustain this type of loyalty and dedication without leading from the front every day. For any founder building something hard and lonely, this one is worth your time. It is a masterclass in conviction, in leadership under fire, and in why the character of the person building matters more than the capital behind them. Building another marketplace is even easier. The hard part is making all three work together and frequently enough, efficiently enough, and profitably enough. That's the real test for Supertails now. The smartest thing I did was to put my health front and center as the highest priority in my life when I turned 57. I was morbidly obese and was very sedentary in my lifestyle, My father and grandfather had both died before they reached the age of 60. My grandfather had two strokes and was quadriplegic. One my uncle and a cousin also had strokes. Handwriting was on the wall. I took a full year off to retool my body. I signed on with barbara blackburn as my trainer. I partnered with my brother in law Mark Holt to start doing hikes and biking. I lost 70 pounds of weight (before the days of GLP drugs) in 2002 and have stayed fit ever since. I still workout with Barbara. I turned 81 today. I am in a top shape physically and mentally and still drive and live independently. I want to live to be 102 to celebrate India's 100th independence anniversary.

Founded by Naman Pushp, the Bengaluru startup has already completed 13,000+ autonomous flights and is working with Andhra Pradesh to scale to 10,000 flights a day. The bigger idea is simple: change the economics of flying by changing the aircraft itself. 1. The real problem is aircraft weight Airbound argues that traditional aircraft spend too much energy carrying themselves. Its current aircraft weighs about 3.3 lb and carries 2.2 lb of payload, while its next version aims to carry 11 lb with a 6.6 lb aircraft. 2. Logistics comes before passengers Airbound is starting with healthcare, e-commerce and retail deliveries because the value proposition is easier to prove. It has already completed 1,000+ healthcare flights with Narayana Health, cutting some deliveries from hours to minutes. 3. The hard part is scaling the system 13,000 flights prove the aircraft can work. 10,000 flights a day is a completely different challenge involving manufacturing, airspace approvals and beyond-visual-line-of-sight regulation. That is where Airbound's next phase will be tested. Airbound's bet is bigger than drones. It is betting that if you change the physics of transportation, you can change its economics too. No incidents. The Bengaluru startup Airbound just raised 37 million dollars in a Series A led by Greenoaks, with DoorDash, Lachy Groom, and Lightspeed joining in. Founded by Naman Pushp, Airbound builds self-flying aircraft that carry a single passenger or 100 kg of cargo at a fraction of normal aircraft costs. Total funding is now near 50 million dollars since launching in 2023. The state government of Andhra Pradesh signed an agreement to build a drone delivery network across three cities, targeting 10,000 flights a day. This is not a pilot program. This is a government betting its delivery infrastructure on Airbound. Retail, ecommerce, and healthcare deliveries all running on this network. If it scales, Airbound stops being a startup and becomes public infrastructure. DoorDash is not a typical aerospace investor. They are the largest food delivery company on the planet, quietly testing what comes after cars and bikes. Their money in this round is due diligence for a future partnership. The bigger vision is a 300 km trip in 20 minutes, moving people the same way these drones move packages today. The diagnostic flights prove the autonomy works. The Andhra Pradesh network proves the business model works. Passenger transport is simply where the physics eventually points. Airbound is starting with packages. The destination is people. COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest challenge that India has faced since its independence. The CoronaVirus does not see our differences. So it is time that we UNITE to fight it. The pandemic may scale stressing our uneven public health system as well as breaking the back of our economy and our people. The force of our knowledge and innovations must scale faster to propel the Nation back into safety and progress. This platform brings together Members of Parliament across parties, States, and ideologies with an Action Group of top organizations and experts to propel concrete ideas and capable teams. The Action Group will meet every week to select the best ideas that can be recommended to State Governments and enabled for funding.
