Preserve the Soul of Craft – Together The response to my last post on Banarasi was overwhelming — designers, historians, and craft lovers all weighed in. One theme that kept surfacing: if we don’t protect the soul of Craft now, we may lose it forever. Handloom isn’t just about a fabric. It is a living archive of India’s cultural history — every motif, every zari thread tells a story of trade routes, royal courts, temple rituals, and artisan guilds. Yes, reinvention keeps it relevant. But preservation keeps it sacred. Heritage is not preserved by museums alone — it is preserved every time we choose it, respect it, and keep its story alive. Every single handloom garment bought is not just a piece of clothing — it is a paycheck for a weaver, a dye-master, a designer, a finisher, and a storyteller. One purchase can mobilize an entire village economy. I call upon all Designers: • Integrate at least one handloom textile into your festive collection — it doesn’t have to be a sari. Think jackets, skirts, blouses, accessories. • Collaborate with artisan clusters — not just for motifs, but for meaningful co-creation. Visibility keeps the craft relevant. This festive season, let’s stop seeing handloom as “occasion wear only” and start seeing it as an investment in culture, livelihood, and pride. Because when you buy one crafted dupatta or jacket, you aren’t just shopping — you are funding tradition, ensuring skill transfer, and telling the world that India’s heritage matters. 💬 What handloom piece are you adding to your wardrobe this season?
