About us

We're the rain on the roof in a movie. The music flowing through your earbuds when you're at the gym. The footsteps lurking behind you in a video game. The voice of a colleague on a call who seems to be right next to you. The sight of a breathtakingly bright and vivid sunset on your TV. Making experiences come alive through technology is what we do. It's been our mission since day one. It began with our founder, Ray Dolby, a visionary scientist and inventor. As a young engineer and music lover, he was driven to improve the listening experience. And with that simple motivation, plus countless hours of experimentation, he created a solution—a solution that was elegant and practical, highly sophisticated, and wholly devoted to the artist's vision. Even as we've become a global company, Dolby Laboratories continues to reflect Ray Dolby's values. Here, science meets art. And high tech goes far beyond computer code. Founded in 1965 and headquartered in San Francisco, Dolby has grown into a leading global innovator and developer of audio, imaging and voice technologies for cinema, home theaters, PCs, mobile phones, and games. Our products include Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, Dolby Voice, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Today, over 2,000 individuals around the globe share their talents and energy to enable the most immersive experiences that technology can deliver.

  • Meet Marc Whitten, Dolby’s new CEO! For more than six decades, the inventors’ culture Ray Dolby instilled has driven Dolby to transform how the world experiences sight and sound. Today, that story continues as we welcome Marc Whitten as our new CEO. Marc brings deep experience building and scaling category defining products and platforms and driving innovation and growth across ecosystems. He joins Dolby at a moment of strength and opportunity, with the vision and leadership to help define what comes next. We’re deeply thankful to Kevin for nearly two decades of leadership and for positioning Dolby for the future. Welcome to Dolby, Marc! https://lnkd.in/eyfFFh-n

  • The first draft is hard. The rewrite might be harder. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker (and Dolby Creator Lab Grant winner) Carlos López Estrada leads a candid conversation with writers and industry creatives about what happens after the notes come in. How do you figure out which feedback actually helps? When do you push back? And how do you rewrite without sanding away everything that made the idea yours in the first place? They break down the “note behind the note” and get into the very real, very messy process of making a story better in this week’s #DolbyCreatorTalks. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gDuzwuAv

  • We're incredibly happy for all of our interns to join us this fall! But as the social team runs this account, we might be a little bit biased in our excitement for Jason to join. 😉 Welcome to Jason and all the interns! We can't wait!

I am super excited to announce that I will be joining Dolby Laboratories in Burbank, CA, this September as a Global Social Media Intern! I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Dolby’s Social team and learn more about content strategy, creative storytelling, and the entertainment industry. A huge thank you to Jocelyn Reyes and the Dolby Laboratories Social team for seeing something in me and choosing me as the very first Dolby Social Media Intern! I can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

  • How do you build one series for two completely different visual experiences at the same time?   Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel and Director of Photography Darran Tiernan discuss the process behind creating both Authentic Black & White and True-Hue Full Color from day one in this week’s #DolbyCreatorTalks.   They also share some great behind-the-scenes details from production, including how a single New York sequence was assembled across downtown Los Angeles, the Universal backlot, and a soundstage.   Watch here: https://lnkd.in/g2Hf-Bt2

  • Freedom didn't stop at one border. It kept going.   Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson join #DolbyCreatorTalks to discuss "Mexodus," their acclaimed Off-Broadway musical now reimagined as an Audible Original in Dolby Atmos.   Set in the 1850s, "Mexodus" follows enslaved people on the Underground Railroad south, seeking freedom across the Rio Grande into Mexico. Quijada and Robinson perform the live-looped, two-person show themselves, joined by sound designer Mikhail "Misha" Fiksel to break down how they turned it into an immersive audio experience.   Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gk8JAusJ

  • There’s a lot happening in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and in Dolby Cinema, you hear and see every bit of it. TechRadar recently shared their experience watching the film in Dolby Cinema, calling out everything from the rich detail and contrast of Dolby Vision to the way Dolby Atmos brings Peter Parker’s world to life. The massive fight scenes sound incredible, but it’s the details throughout the movie that make the experience so much fun. Every web swing, every shift in the action, and even the quieter emotional moments feel that much more immersive. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gR-hb2dJ

  • Your TV just got smarter. Dolby Vision 2 is rolling out first on select 2026 Hisense TVs, and the upgrade arrives entirely through a firmware update. No new hardware. No setup required. The new imaging technology reads the creative intent behind every scene, delivering richer brightness, deeper contrast, and smoother motion across the Dolby Vision content you already watch. Blockbuster night. Big game Sunday. Season finale binge. Every frame is about to look its best. See which Hisense TVs are getting Dolby Vision 2 first: https://lnkd.in/dQDBE--Z

  • Sometimes the right creative partner makes the decision easy.   Beef creator Lee Sung Jin shares how he recruited FINNEAS to compose the music for season two. After listening to his work while writing the season, Lee visited his studio and heard how FINNEAS had transformed a field recording of nearby sprinklers into a percussive element. That curiosity and willingness to find music in unexpected places told him everything he needed to know.   Lee joins his Emmy-Nominated team to discuss how cinematography, sound, dialogue, music, and color came together to give the new season its own identity while still feeling unmistakably Beef in this week’s #DolbyCreatorTalks.   Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gAi2dDCw

  • Alone. Isolated. Carrying memories no one else shares.   Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino joins #DolbyCreatorTalks for his fifth appearance, this time to discuss his score for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."   Giacchino breaks down how he approached Peter Parker's new emotional reality, not by writing an entirely new theme, but by taking pieces away from the melody audiences already know, and layering in a dark synth palette beneath the orchestra.    He also talks about his longtime creative partnership with director Destin Daniel Cretton, recording an 85-piece orchestra at Abbey Road, and finding the balance between Spider-Man-sized spectacle and the loneliness at the heart of this new chapter.   Watch here: dolbylabs.co/4bwmwLD

  • Thoughtful perspective from Jed Harmsen on this weekend's record-breaking box office success. A historic weekend for moviegoing, and Dolby Cinema is proud to be part of it. Two-thirds of tickets sold before the weekend even started. People didn't just decide to see this movie, they decided how.

Last Monday I took my older daughter to the global premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the Dolby Theatre (in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, of course). She'd been counting down to this movie for months, so the invitation bought me a rare and fleeting amount of parental coolness. What stuck with me wasn't a shot or a scene, but rather the magic of a full house reacting at the exact same instant to each twist and turn, and my kid somewhere in the middle of it, having the time of her summer. What I didn't fully appreciate that night though was that nearly two-thirds of Dolby Cinema's seats for opening weekend were already sold. Not sold over opening weekend - sold days or weeks in advance, by people who had already decided that if they were going to see this movie, they were going to see it a specific way. That intent became the highest-grossing weekend in Dolby Cinema history. More than $11 million domestically, and a per-screen average over $60,000, the highest we've ever recorded. But I want to zoom out, because the bigger story isn't ours. The industry is looking at a domestic weekend eclipsing $430 million. The biggest moviegoing weekend in history. Not for one format or one company - for everybody. Filmmakers, studios, exhibitors, the people working concessions on a Friday night. Great content in great environments produces great outcomes. And here's another stat I'll be sitting with all week: nearly half of Spider-Man's audience was under 25. A few months ago I wrote that younger generations haven't abandoned communal experiences - they've just raised the bar for what earns their presence. I said the question was never whether they'd show up, but whether we were building something worth showing up for. This weekend, most of them answered before the movie even opened. They didn't just show up. They picked their format, bought their tickets early, and brought their friends. Two-thirds of our audience made a plan to be there, and people don't make plans around things they can get anytime. You only get one shot at seeing it for the first time with everybody else.
