HYPER LIGHT BREAKER

Welcome to the Hyper Light Breaker Wiki! This wiki contains information on Combat, Controls, Builds, Characters, Upgrades, Lore, and more for Hyper Light Breaker, the sequel to the indie darling Hyper Light Drifter created by Heart Machine.

What is Hyper Light Breaker?

Hyper Light Breaker is a new science-fiction roguelike action game developed by Heart Machine and published by Arc Games that is set in the "beautiful-but-bleak" Hyper Light universe.

As a highly skilled member of the Breaker mercenary band, you must embark into the wild and unnatural world of the Overgrowth, a chaotic remnant of civilization which shifts and changes each time you enter it. Your goal is to find and execute the Crowns, powerful servants who have claimed sections of the Overgrowth for themselves and guard the path to your true target, the Abyss King.

Hyper Light Breaker is one of the first 3D open-world roguelike video games, featuring a procedurally generated open world where entire biomes reset and morph when the player either achieves their goal of slaying the Abyss King or dies trying. As a Breaker, players will scavenge the Overgrowth for new gear and equipment to grow strong enough to face the Crowns, all the while fending off fearsome enemies under the Abyss King's control.

The developers have also coined the term "extraction roguelike" to refer to how Breakers can extract from the Overgrowth anytime. If you can survive for long enough, you'll be able to escape the Overgrowth with all of your loot intact, allowing you to develop your unique build further or invest resources into the Cursed Outpost, your desolate HUB town where vendors and helpful NPCs alike readily offer you their aid (for a price).

Hyper Light Breaker Story Overview

In Hyper Light Breaker, you play as a highly-skilled mercenary known as a Breaker tasked with eliminating the shadowy and mysterious Abyss King.

To find a path to your quarry, you must venture into the ever-changing, labyrinthine confines of the Overgrowth, a peculiar landmass which shifts over time. When you fall in combat against the legions of the Abyss King, you will be resurrected and the Overgrowth will change: new biomes will spring up across the land, new gear will become available, and new adversaries will rise to challenge your ascent. The Crowns, abominable loyalists to the Abyss King, are your main obstacles and you must best them in combat if you hope to open the path to your true target.

Defeating the Crowns is not enough, though. Scattered across the Overgrowth are remnants of a savage war long since past: colossal weapons pierce the earth, broken limbs from defeated titans act as distant landmarks, and the last flickers of civilisation have almost faded away. The shattered memories of the Crowns are key to understanding how the Overgrowth came to be, and how you can stop it.

Your quest is simple: venture out into the Overgrowth, find the gear you need to take down the Crowns, decipher their hidden memories, and survive to do it all over again until the Abyss King is defeated once and for all.

Combat and Exploration in Hyper Light Breaker

Become A Breaker

In Hyper Light Breaker, you will play as one of several unique Breakers, all of whom have distinct designs and playstyle opportunities. Breakers have access to various SyComs, roles that influence their stat totals and grant you special SyCom Perks which can used to craft devastatingly powerful builds. Three Breakers are available at launch, with more slated to arrive in major updates.

Whether you prefer Vermillion's jack-of-all-trades playstyle, Lapis' melee prowess, or Goro's skill with Rails, there's a Breaker perfect for you.

You can even team up with other Breakers in co-op if you would rather take on the horrors of the Overgrowth together.

Create Unique Builds

Hyper Light Breaker has a massive arsenal of equipment for players to find, upgrade, and use in intricate builds that will tame the chaos of the Overgrowth. Weapons are a core part of any build and there are plenty of them to experiment with, whether you enjoy the close-quarters carnage of Blades or the precise, ammo-reliant power of Rails. Alongside new weapons, Breakers can also be equipped with game-changing mods called Holobytes which will massively influence your playstyle and gameplay.

Finding the right piece of equipment at the right time on the right Breaker can result in an exceedingly powerful build. From high CRIT-focused builds that specialise in massive burst damage to builds that leverage the debilitating power of status effects to cripple their opponents, there is a wide variety of viable playstyles to play around with as you explore the Overgrowth and combat the Crowns.

Revive the Cursed Outpost

Whether you succeed in executing the Abyss King, safely extract alongside your loot, or fall to the hordes of the Overgrowth, you will never return empty-handed. Rare resources you gather through battling the Crowns can be used to revive the desolate and decrepit Cursed Outpost, opening up new opportunities for trade and growth. Alternatively, those resources can be spent on your Breakers, unlocking new permanent skills and stat bonuses that will persist between Cycles.

No matter how hard you find the challenges of the Overgrowth, there will always be a way to get stronger.

Explore the Procedurally Generated Overgrowth

To find a path to the Abyss King, you'll need to venture into the uncharted wilds of the Overgrowth, a peculiar and ever-changing landmass ruled by the Abyss King. The Overgrowth is procedurally generated, meaning that no two versions of it will be the same: there will be different biomes, different loot drops, different bosses, and more.

After you successfully slay the Abyss King or die four times during a Cycle, the Overgrowth will reset and reshape itself. New biomes and locations will spring up across the land, the Crowns you previously defeated will return, new opportunities for loot will arise, and more memories of the past will become available No matter how much you've fought or how refined your build may be, there is always a reason to return to the Overgrowth.

Find and Execute the Crowns

The Crowns are the elite gatekeepers of the Abyss King, loyal servants who guard the path to their master from grand arenas across the Overgrowth. If you wish to challenge them and open the way to the Abyss King, you must first gear up and defeat the Elite opponents across the map who hold the keys to their domains.

Unlike regular enemies, the Crowns are vicious and unrelenting. With ruinous strength, tricky attack patterns, and infinitely respawning waves of minions, these boss battles will test every skill you've learned and push your build crafting to the limit. Best three Crowns in one Cycle and you'll not only be showered in high-level loot, but you'll also unlock access to the Abyss King himself.

Extract to Keep Your Loot

The Overgrowth is exceedingly dangerous and while you can rise from the dead again and again, your gear is always at risk. Each time you fall and resurrect back at the Cursed Outpost, your equipment will degrade and if it runs out of durability, it will break. High rarity gear will degrade slower but nothing is safe from the claws of defeat.

The only way to safeguard your gear is to extract. If the heat of the Overgrowth is a bit too much, you can escape to the safety of the Cursed Outpost by visiting the dedicated extraction zone. Survive against the hoard of enemies who will try and stop your escape and you'll arrive back at the Outpost, with your gear in pristine condition. Now, you can upgrade it and take it back into the Overgrowth for another run: just be careful not to die or you'll lose it all again.
