If there’s one thing Subnautica 2 and its predecessor have done magnificently, is giving you tools to explore the vast world they’ve created. We saw a huge array of vehicles in the first game, from the standard Seamoth to the massive Cyclops submarine, but at its early stages, Subnatuica 2 only has the Tadpole.

This comes with various upgrades to make it faster, stronger and even have more storage, but one thing you’ll want to upgrade immediately is its ability to go further down into the depths of the ocean. In order to do this, though, you will need to find a very specific recipe hidden in the world. Thankfully, we know exactly where it’s located.

Maybe not used in the most crafts, but the few it's in is impactful.

What is the Tadpole Depth Module?

Subnautica 2 Depth Module MK1 Recipe

The Tadpole Depth Module Mk.1 is the first variation of an upgrade to your personal travel device. There is only one in the game at the moment, with a second one being available at a later date.

This Depth Module is something that must be found in the world through one of the small recipe packages and not something that is scanned.

For the first iteration, this will allow you to bring your trusty Tadpole craft downwards of 450 meters, almost doubling the original maximum depth. It is almost mandatory to progress the story as, while it’s possible to get to where you need without it, it’s significantly harder to do so otherwise.

Because of this, the Depth Module MK1 should be picked up as early as possible to ensure ease of use through the second portion of the game. Because the depths don’t go down below 450 meters in the starting area of the Shallows (outside a giant hole where your spacecraft crashed, but there’s really no reason to go back down), you won’t need to worry about it until much later.

It should be noted that you will need a Modification Station in your habitat to craft the Depth Module:

  • 3x Celestine
  • 2x Enameled Glass
  • 1x Chip

Where to Find the Tadpole Depth Module Mk.1

The Tadpole Depth Module Mk.1 is found in a slightly tricky spot only because it is below the 250-meter threshold for the Tadpole at this point, and it’s guarded by a nasty Needler Mango. These are the creatures that will curl up in a spiral and then shoot little projectiles at you. They become increasingly annoying and can damage your Tadpole considerably.

You start to go in the right direction when you get to the Observatory area. After coming across a monolith Rosetta Stone on a cliffside, look down to the east from here. There will be a large underground rock formation that goes all the way up.

This is the structure you will need to enter. Head down into the cave’s entrance, which is roughly 250 meters down. As mentioned, there will be a number of Needler Mangos patrolling the area, with two inside the small rock formation itself.

Upon entering, find one of the holes in the ground and head down closer to 300 meters. There will be red plant life spread throughout the soil of this area. Along with it, you should see a downed Tadpole. This is a Chassis design that we suggest you scan for one couple needed to unlock the bulkier extension to your Tadpole.

Subnautica 2 Depth Module MK1 Recipe Card

Right next to the frame will be the Tadpole Module Mk. 1 recipe data card sitting on the ground. Grab it and head back to your habitat to craft it and install it into the back of Tadpole for quite the big upgrade. If you’re short on materials, there’s Celestine and Creature Enamel all around the rock formation you found the recipe card at.
