Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose. Well, that’s certainly the case for Lithium in Unknown Worlds’ survival game, Subnautica 2. Many of the minerals near the beginning of the game are scattered throughout the area, with no discerning location to farm them, maybe outside of Silver.

That’s not necessarily the case for Lithium. You might be introduced to this element next to a downed ship where one is conveniently sitting on a desk. But that’s just a taste of the Lithium you need. This guide will help you locate a good source of Lithium in the early parts of Subnautica 2, allowing you to obtain some of the better craftable items early on.

Where to Farm Lithium

There are a handful of different locations you will be able to farm Lithium from, but the easiest is early in the campaign.

For starters, Lithium is similar to Gold and Sulfur in that it tends to grow and appear in more heated areas. It makes sense given its chemical make-up, but where exactly do you go to collect this?

The first can be found directly east of and slightly southeast of the Lifepod. You will eventually come across a location full of thermal vents and volcanic activity, making it the perfect place for Lithium rocks to grow.

These generally aren’t found in the open, but instead in the various caves of the area, so you’ll need to swim down a fair distance to search for them. Because of this, you will likely need two things: a Rebreather and the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. This will require you to go through several different activities, such as crafting a Sonic Resonator and taking care of an infestation, along with building a decently sized base to craft all the required items.

The second option is far easier but requires a little bit of tight maneuvering. Directly 350 meters to the south, you will come across a suspiciously open shell, and in the middle is a hollowed-out formation.

This is essentially a colossal clam that will try to devour you if you touch any of the tendrils that’s in the hollowed-out formation in the middle. But there’s a problem: Lithium is in here as well. So, taking your Sonic Resonator, you will have to shoot the multitude of Lithium deposits from the outside, and for the stuff you can’t hit, wiggle your way inside.

If you touch any of the little dangly bits, the colossal beast will open every one of its eyes and stare at you, and if you touch one of them again, it will begin to close its mouth. So be careful, but this is the best way to obtain Lithium.

What Lithium is Used For

Subnautica 2 Lithium Recipe Plasteel Ingot

Lithium is a mineral that is not particularly the most sought after for the quantity of items it can produce, but instead it’s something that will benefit you greatly for the small number of things it contributes to crafting.

Namely, Lithium is the key material used in crafting Portable Oxygen Generators and Plasteel Ingots. You will need to build a Processor to get the latter, but once you do, you can put in one Lithium and two Titanium. Surprisingly, there are only two recipes that require Plasteel Ingots:

  • High Capacity Air Tank
  • Scout Ray Chassis

That’s not a lot, but these are two incredibly vital items. The air tank allows you to breathe for much longer, while the Scout Ray Chassis allows you to attach a Tadpole to a speedier design, along with giving you a bit of storage in the process.

This early game structure needs a little bit of elbow grease, but it's worth getting it up and running.
