Like any survival game, Subnautica 2 has a ton of different materials to collect within the depths of the ocean. Whether it’s gold, sulfur or troilite, there are numerous minerals that are found and used to survive.

One such material comes in the form of Axum Bacteria. This isn’t necessarily a mineral, but something that becomes somewhat important near the endgame. This is because it’s used in a craft that can greatly increase your yield of minerals, but in order to do so, you will need to travel to uncharted territories to collect them.

What is Axum Bacteria and its Uses?

Axum Bacteria is a form of material in Subnautica 2’s endgame. It will likely be the final material you will collect in the survival game as it’s located very far in the story (or at least very far into the Early Access version).

It isn’t the most important material you’ll be able to collect because it really only has one purpose. There is a Cultivation option in the Habitat Builder tool, and a single item called the Metal Farm which can be crafted with Axum Bacteria. This costs exactly one along with a Mangalloy Ingot, which requires Titanium Ingot, Atacamite and Troilite.

Once this is created, you will be able to farm any form of mineral found in Subnautica at any location. It’s a very handy tool, but something that’s more of a convenience than it is a necessity.

How to Get Axum Bacteria?

Axum Bacteria is quite unique in the sense that it’s one of the very few materials found in Subnautica 2 that’s not respawnable (at least not at the time of writing). There are only around five Axum Bacteria that can be found, so you will have to take care if you try to get the material, make sure you pick it up.

This isn’t like your typical mineral that you smash with your tools, and it will instantly be stored in your inventory. You will need to break a small cage holding the Axum Bacteria, and it will allow you to pick it up immediately after.

As mentioned before, the Axum Bacteria is the final material you will collect in Subnautica 2, and because of this, it’s located all the way at the end of the current Early Access in the Metal Farm fields.

This is the nuclear waste looking location past the Power Plant and in Root Canyon. It glows bright green with large metal rods all around (which are the Metal Farm tools), along with a nasty Collector Leviathan roaming above the area.

This is located right on the bottom floor of the sea, which is below the 450-meter limit for the Tadpole. This means that you will have to hop out and swim down to collect it, otherwise you risk damaging your Tadpole in the process.

When you get to the bottom, you will see little pods that you need to break and collect the Axum Bacteria. There are three in the middle ponds and two on the side to the west. There are also aggressive Epicurean, so be prepared to dodge a bit.

Once you’ve collected all five Axum Bacteria, head back to your habitat and start growing your Metal Farm.
