Hytale, after years of uncertainty, has finally been released into its Early Access period. As the developer warned, it definitely feels like it's not close to being finished, even if you can still spend hours playing around in its blocky world. If you've played Minecraft, then the game feels familiar from the beginning. However, that can make getting used to its differences that much more difficult, because you're so used to Minecraft that the differences can throw you off.

Similar to Minecraft, your tools and weapons lose durability as you use them in Hytale. If you don't want to keep crafting new tools, then you'll want to invest in crafting repair kits to help your items last longer.

Crafting Repair Kits

Hytale Craft Repair Kit

Before you can use repair kits, you need to craft them. To do this, you need a workbench. The first workbench has some simple requirements, making it fairly easy to make one. You'll need:

  • x4 of any tree blocks
  • x3 of any stone

Then, open up your inventory, where you have a limited crafting menu that lets you craft items to get started with your Hytale adventure, and that includes the workbench. Craft it, then put it on your hotbar to place in the world.

Once it's in the world, you can interact with the workbench in order to craft more items than you have available just through your inventory crafting. One of these recipes is the repair kit. There are different repair kits, but the only part that changes between them aside from their names and what you use to craft them is how much maximum durability they remove from an item when you use them.

Your standard repair kit is crafted using:

  • x2 Linen Scraps
  • x1 Iron Ingot
  • x1 Light Leather

Your repair kit has one use, so you'll want to keep extras available. It's a good idea to keep some ready at the location you're using as your base, especially if you have your world set in a way where you drop items when you die.

Using Repair Kits

The way you use a repair kit can feel a bit strange. You can't use them in your inventory currently, although that would be great to see in a future update. Instead, you have to put the repair kit on your hotbar at the bottom of your screen. Then, close out your inventory and select the repair kit so that your character is holding it.

Next, use the repair kit the same way you'd use a weapon. This brings up a window that gives you the option to use the repair kit to repair an item. Items that have durability lower than their maximum durability show up on the list. From here, pick the item you want to repair, and the kit will be used on it.

Repair kits in Hytale have a drawback, however, and that's how they impact the maximum durability of the item you repair. This feature means that you can't just make one set of tools and weapons, then repair them endlessly. Instead, repairing items will cause the item to lose up to a certain percent of their maximum durability, and that percentage changes depending on the type of repair kit you use.

As a result, repairing the same item multiple times will cause that item's max durability to keep dwindling, and at some point, that makes the item no longer worth using when the max durability drops too low.

As an example, if you have an item with a starting max durability of 100 and repair it once, it can lose 10 of its max durability, bringing the number down to 90. When you keep repairing the same item and the durability keeps going down, you'll reach a point where repair kits can't do much more for you. Then, you're better off crafting a new version of that item in Hytale.
