What is Hades 2?
Hades 2 is a new third-person isometric rogue-like dungeon-crawler RPG game being developed and published by Supergiant Games. Hades 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed game, Hades, released in December 2018. This time, players will be controlling Melinoe, Zagreus' sister, as she journeys through both the Underworld and the heavens above to complete her task of slaying Chronos, the Titan who personifies time.
Similar to the previous highly-acclaimed game, players will have to traverse multiple rooms of different environments, each filled with a variety of different types of Enemies, and possibly be protected by different Bosses. As a Rogue-like game, it will give players a chance to choose between different aspects of their build after clearing each room. These can range from increasing Melinoe's maximum health and magick or gaining Boons from the different Gods and Goddesses of Olympus.

Hades 2 The Unseen Update
Hades 2 launches its third major patch with The Unseen Update, one of the game's most expansive content drops yet, released on June 18, 2025. This update introduces the Hidden Aspects of the Nocturnal Arms, unlocking brand-new fighting styles for each weapon and encouraging players to rethink their combat strategies. Players can also take on enhanced challenges through the Vow of Rivals at the Oath of the Unseen, facing off against more powerful Guardian variants with unique mechanics and surprises. Godsent Hexes debut as well, merging Moon magick with the power of the Olympians to create devastating new effects that open the door to varied and creative builds. On the narrative front, the update adds new optional events that further develop character relationships and expand the game's lore. The update also includes visual enhancements, new music tracks, and new enemy encounters.

New Approach to Combat in Hades 2
The Unseen Update brings a major shift in combat through the introduction of Hidden Aspects, unlockable final forms for each of the Nocturnal Arms. These transformations offer new mechanics that reshape how each weapon is used. Hidden Aspects encourage players to rethink their favorite builds and experiment with entirely new strategies.

Complementing these additions, the Umbral Flames have been completely reworked for a faster, more responsive feel, making ranged combat smoother and more dynamic. Other weapons have also been fine-tuned to match the update's quicker pacing.
Godsent Hexes in Hades 2
The Unseen Update brings a powerful new feature to Hades 2 in the form of Godsent Hexes. Through the Path of Stars, players can now fuse each of Selene's lunar Hexes with Olympian blessings.

This system deepens the game's build variety by allowing you to blend lunar magick with divine power. As a result, builds become more dynamic and diverse, encouraging experimentation and offering new approaches and possibilities in combat.
Tougher Guardian Encounters in Hades 2
The Unseen Update introduces the Vow of Rivals, a new challenge unlocked through the Oath of the Unseen that raises the stakes for boss encounters. Through this, players can now face off against empowered versions of each Guardian, now armed with new mechanics and behaviors that demand fresh new strategies and approaches in fighting these Guardians.

Once the first tier of these enhanced Guardians is defeated across both the Underworld and Surface routes, even tougher ranks become available, escalating the difficulty further. To keep players on their toes between boss fights, new Warden enemies have also been added in regions like Erebus and the City of Ephyra.
Hades 2 The Warsong Update
Hades 2 has launched its second major update, The Warsong Update, which was released on February 20, 2025, bringing players to the peak of Mount Olympus for a climactic showdown. This patch introduces Ares, the God of War, as a new Olympian, complete with his own set of powerful Boons. Players can also bond with a new animal Familiar, explore expanded storylines, and experience over 2,000 new voice lines. Several core systems have been refined, including the Boons, Altar of Ashes, and resource gathering, while improvements to the menus and UI enhance overall gameplay.

The Final Confrontation and New Characters in Hades 2
The Warsong Update brings players to the summit of Mount Olympus for a climactic showdown against Typhon, the monstrous Father of All Monsters, unleashed by Chronos in a last act of destruction. This final confrontation marks a major turning point in the story as Olympus itself hangs in the balance.

The update also introduces Ares, the God of War, returning with a deadly set of Boons centered on raw aggression and damage over time. His signature effect, Wounds, boosts attack power and rewards rapid, repeated strikes. Rounding out the cast is Gale the Polecat, the final animal Familiar. Found before the Prometheus fight, Gale helps players by increasing Flora spawns and occasionally doubling gathered resources.
Revamped Mechanics & Menus in Hades 2
The Warsong Update brings improvements to several of Hades 2's core systems, both gameplay depth and user experience. Boons from the Olympians have been rebalanced and expanded, offering a wider range of powerful new effects to experiment with across different builds. The Altar of Ashes has also been reimagined, featuring revamped effects and completely redrawn artwork for each card.

Resource gathering has been streamlined, removing the need to track which tools unlock which materials, and now you can focus more on exploration and experimentation without worry. On the UI side, menus across the game have received visual upgrades, including smoother animations and cleaner navigation.
Hades 2 The Olympic Update
Hades 2 just received its Olympic Update, which was released on October 17, 2024. This update brought a wealth of exciting new content and gameplay refinements, offering fans plenty to explore and enjoy. From new regions and weapons to expanded storylines and gameplay enhancements, this patch significantly deepens the early access experience of Hades 2. Below is a breakdown of everything that was added to the game for this update.

Mount Olympus: A New Region in Hades 2
The Olympic Update introduces Mount Olympus, a stunning new region filled with unique challenges.

Previously, players could traverse regions such as Erebus and Tartarus, but Mount Olympus stands out as a setting designed for the most skilled and determined players.
Expanding the Narrative and New Characters in Hades 2
The Hades 2 Olympic Update delivers a wealth of new story content, significantly deepening the game's narrative experience. With nearly 2,500 additional voice lines, the update brings the vibrant and dynamic cast to life. Upon reaching the newly introduced Mount Olympus, players will encounter a dramatic plot twist that reshapes the overarching story. This pivotal moment opens new narrative pathways and builds anticipation for what lies ahead in the early access journey.

The update also introduces two new Allies, each with their own secrets, blessings, and Keepsakes. These allies bring unique gameplay benefits and narrative depth, rewarding players who complete their associated quests. Joining the cast are major figures from Greek mythology, including Athena, Dionysus, and Prometheus. Additionally, two new Familiars can now be discovered.
Hades 2 Enhanced Gameplay Features
Several gameplay features have been overhauled or added to enrich the player experience:
- Seals and Monuments: The update introduces more Seals and Monuments, which provide additional challenges and rewards for players seeking greater difficulty.

- Streamlined Options: A series of quality-of-life updates simplify and enrich gameplay, making it easier for newcomers and veterans alike to navigate the ever-evolving world of Hades 2.
Hades 2 Final Nocturnal Arm, Xinth: The Black Coat
A highlight of the update is the addition of Xinth: the Black Coat, the final weapon in the Nocturnal Arms arsenal. This versatile weapon combines melee and ranged capabilities, offering a unique playstyle for players who favor adaptability. Xinth excels in both aggressive and hit-and-run strategies, thanks to its homing special and Omega special attacks.

Additionally, the update tweaks the special attacks of previously available weapons, balancing their utility to complement the Black Coat's introduction.
Hades 2 Additional Updates and Balancing
Alongside the major additions, the Olympic Update introduces a host of tweaks to refine overall balance and gameplay flow. Adjustments to Boons, Items, and enemy mechanics ensure a smoother and more polished combat experience. Visual and audio enhancements further elevate the game's immersive atmosphere, particularly in the breathtaking new Mount Olympus region.

In addition, the update expands platform accessibility with native Mac support, allowing the game to run seamlessly on Apple devices with M1 chips or later.
Hades 2 Lore
As with the previous game, the prevailing story in Hades 2 is not given much introduction or premise and must instead be discovered by the players as they go through the game. The only thing we're sure of is that it takes place sometime after the events of the previous game's story. Melinoe's family - her parents Hades and Persephone along with her brother Zagreus - seems to have gone missing. The trailer suggests that they have been abducted, or at the very least either Hades or Zagreus is being held captive by Chronos, the Titan of Time, and the primary antagonist of the game.

These abductions have come to create consequences that seem to have affected the whole Underworld itself in certain ways. In the previous game, Enemies in the Underworld were ordered to bar your way to stop Zagreus from leaving his home. This time around, the souls of the Underworld seem to have been affected negatively and seem to be attacking you not out of any command but almost instinctively. You'll also be able to shepherd some lost non-hostile souls as you journey from room to room as the princess of the Underworld.

Hecate, the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft, the Moon, the Night, and of Crossroads serves as Melinoe's mentor and trainer. While Zagreus was more of a warrior type in combat, Melinoe makes use of witchcraft and magic to burst through her Enemies, as per the teachings of her Headmistress. This isn't to say that she's limited to just casting magic spells, however, as she has a variety of Weapons to use.
Hades 2 Gameplay Mechanics
What are the Weapons in Hades 2
Just like in the previous game, Melinoe will have a couple of Weapons at her disposal to master, called the Nocturnal Arms. She starts out with a plain staff for players to get used to. If Zagreus in the previous game mostly used melee weapons but had a special bow in the mix, Melinoe would instead have mostly ranged weapons that specialize in magic, with a few melee options in the mix.
Melinoe's Nocturnal Arms are all unlockable in exchange for special in-game currency that the player will get to accumulate as you attempt to complete her task over and over again. Each one will have a different style in terms of their basic attacks and their charged attacks. Their different aspects can eventually be improved further whenever you pick up Deadalus' Hammer during your journey.
Casting Spells in Hades 2
New to this sequel game, you now have an additional resource meter to manage with Melinoe, called Magick. Magick is essentially this game's version of mana - this resource depletes itself whenever you cast spells outside of your basic attacks, and whenever you use your Nocturnal Arm's charged attack.
Magick provides an additional layer of difficulty and strategizing as you may want to save your magick for stronger waves that will eventually appear in the room. Magick replenishes itself after every room. However, within a room, you'll only have scraps that you can randomly pick up to replenish it. Certain Boons and upgrades may help your Magick management as you progress.
Hades 2 What are Boons from Gods and Goddesses
As you go through the game, you'll have to make decisions with regard to the rewards you'll get after clearing a room of all its Enemies or Bosses. Often times you can get a Boon as your reward. Boons are improvements you can get that can give you passive boosts, improve your attacks, enchant them with certain elements, and even change your entire build drastically.

Boons are given by the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The nature of Boons and the different bonuses they grant will be in line with what God or Goddess is granting them. Whenever it's possible to choose a Boon as your reward for clearing a room, you'll be able to see which of the pantheon will grant your reward based on the symbol in the orb.
