It is all about making the math actually work 😀👍Patrik Backman jakoi tämänThere's a clear split in the VC community about AI roll-ups: half the takes are euphoric; the other half are “the maths doesn’t work.” Both can be true. Because the bad version is obvious: buy services revenue, sprinkle “AI” on the deck, promise software multiples, and hope the market forgets what gross margin is. But the good version? It is very compelling. As investors in AI roll-ups, we’ve learned that AI-enabled services (AIES) models only work when AI becomes the operating model, not a janky appendage. It has to do two things at once: systematise a messy, human-driven service into a standardised platform, and automate the workflow so the economics genuinely bend. So if you can’t show: 🔹 AI (genuinely) replacing human labour and structural margin expansion 🔹 a repeatable integration playbook (not “we’ll figure it out as we go”) 🔹 and a platform that compounds (each acquisition makes the next one faster, cheaper, and better) .. then you don’t have an AIES roll-up. At OpenOcean, we’re serious about AIES platforms with inorganic growth right out of the traps, but we underwrite the unsexy bits: workflow standardisation, integration cadence, pricing power, retention mechanics, and automation that shows up in the P&L. Multiple expansion isn’t the strategy. It’s the result you earn if the business actually starts behaving differently. Having been part of MySQL AB for six years and through the exit to Sun in 2008, it is sad to see many old friends and colleagues now need to leave the team they have spent most of their careers in. MySQL’s original promise was openness and freedom from lock-in. Under Oracle, that promise has faded. I am very glad that there is a strong alternative and it is exciting to see how the MariaDB community currently is booming, especially around AI use cases. Patrik Backman reagoi tähänPatrik Backman reagoi tähänA lot of investors are betting on quantum computing to be the next big breakthrough innovation. I think photonic computing gets real first. Not because it would be more powerful, but because it’s more practical. I don’t have an engineering degree so that’s probably why I’ve had to spend hours understanding quantum computing. I’ve listened to some really good podcasts and read a few papers, but somehow I still don’t understand why it’s such a hot topic? I understand the promise and how that will change compute but I feel like most people are overestimating the applications short to medium turn. Photonic computation how ever feels like something that could arrive soon, and which opens up many interesting avenues. Instead of electrons, photonic systems use light (photons) to compute. That means: 🔥 less heat ⚡️ less energy 🔄 far more parallelism But the real unlock isn’t just compute, it’s communication speed. We’re still massively bottlenecked by how fast data moves between systems, chips, and layers of software. Photonic compute starts to break that bottleneck. Data speed is one of the main reasons I’m skeptical when people say AGI is “just around the corner”. We are currently building on infrastructure that wasn’t designed for it. Photonic compute could change that 🤷♂️

The AI momentum here is striking: 🔹 Black Forest Labs (Freiburg) - $450m raised, $3.25b valuation. Backed by a16z, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures. FLUX models now used by Adobe, Canva, Meta, Microsoft. 🔹 Prior Labs (Freiburg) - €9m pre-seed led by Balderton. TabPFN published in Nature. Angels from Hugging Face, DeepMind, Black Forest Labs. 🔹 Mirelo AI (Tübingen) - $41m seed co-led by Index Ventures and a16z. AI sound for video, from Max Planck and Google Brain researchers. 🔹 kausable (Heidelberg/Karlsruhe) - founded by Johannes Haux. Reasoning-first AI built on causal world models. Backed by co-founders of Black Forest Labs. Central to this: University of Tübingen, Tübingen AI Center, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, and Cyber Valley, one of Europe's largest AI research consortia. Also in Heilbronn, over €3b is being invested into IPAI - a 30-hectare AI campus backed by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and the Schwarz Group, already attracting ETH Zurich and TU Munich 🏗️ Local VCs like Mätch VC, LEA Partners, D11Z. Ventures and Bosch Ventures are doing an excellent job underwriting high-integrity early-stage investing in the region. This is a region with a GDP on par with Sweden's (~€650b) 🇸🇪 - with the highest R&D spend, most patents per capita, and densest concentration of hidden world champions in Germany. Deep tech AI, built on deep industrial foundations, a short journey from regional European centres Basel, Zurich, and a short flight to London and afar.
