In Nioh, if you run out of ki (stamina), your character becomes incapacitated for a moment. Pretty sure First Berserker Kazhan has pretty steep stamina management too (if it's completely depleted, you can't do anything). Maybe the author exagerated with the "leaves unable to move for a few seconds" but many soulslikes give you penalties for being out of stamina (i.e. it will regenerated at a slower rate if totally depleted).
