Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring are companions, often mimicking the Lands Between's Enemies, summoned by the Spirit Calling Bell to aid you in Combat. This page covers how they function, the spirit ashes available, summon costs, and a community-driven list of their relative strength.

  • With the release of Shadow of the ErdtreeSpirit Ashes have received a new upgrade called Revered Spirit Ashes, which allows them to become more powerful even if they are already at +10 level. Do note that this only applies while you are on the Realm of Shadow.

Shadow of the Erdtree New Spirit Ashes

With the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, 20 new powerful Spirit Ashes are added to the already stacked 64 Spirit Ashes in the base game. This leads to a total of 84 Spirit Ashes available between the base game and the new content added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Not only there are more Spirit Ashes being added to the game with Shadow of the Erdtree, but also in the Realm of Shadow, players can use a new item called Revered Spirit Ash, to make them more powerful. This new upgrade for Spirit Ashes allows them to exceed the power they have, even if they are already at +10 level.

This page is up to date with all this new content. Players will be able to search and find all Shadow of the Erdtree New Spirit Ashes here, as well as to learn about their Stats, Attack Patterns, Requirements, Upgrade requirements, Best uses, and much more regarding the new Spirit Ashes added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC! This comprehensive guide will help players optimize their combat strategies utilizing Spirit Ashes.

NOTE: As of Patch 1.13.2 Multiple spirit ashes stats and stagger values were changed, along with Revered Spirit Ash scalings.

How to use Spirit Ashes

To use Spirit Ashes, players must first obtain the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna at the Church of Elleh [Map Link].

Similar to Items, Spirit Ashes can be equipped to and used from your Quick Slots or Pouch. However, they can only be used while not in Multiplayer Coop and when near a Rebirth Monument.

Can you Summon Two Ashes in Elden Ring?

After summoning in a given area, you are not allowed to summon again in that area until you rest at any Sites of Grace or Fast Travel.

  • Players may reuse the Spirit Ashes to dismiss a summon.
  • Leaving the boundary of a valid summoning area will dismiss any active spirits.
  • Spirits may only be summoned once per encounter, so you cannot re-summon them after they die during a boss fight.
  • Spirits cannot be summoned while the effects of the Furlcalling Finger Remedy are active. Use the remedy again to cancel its effects.
  • Summoning spirits require either FP or HP depending on the summon.

Monument to Summon Spirits

  • Players must be near a Rebirth Monument, stone obelisks found at many Points of Interest and nearly every boss arena, to use Spirit Ashes.
  • A monument icon, depicted below, will appear on the left side of the screen when conditions are met:

Unlocking Spirit Ashes Upgrades

Roderika is the only NPC capable of upgrading Spirit Ashes. She offers her services after a short side quest:

  1. Talk to Roderika at the Stormhill Shack. [Map Link]
  2. Travel to the Roundtable Hold, and talk to her and to Blacksmith Hewg several times until you exhaust their dialogue options.
  3. Reload the area by leaving or other means.
  4. Roderika will now be sat across from Blacksmith Hewg and is able to upgrade your Spirit Ashes

Upgrading Spirit Ashes

Spirit Ash Upgrades universally increase the summons' Attack Power and Defenses.

Of the 84 Spirit Ashes, there are two different types of Spirit Ashes, each with their own Upgrade Materials:

Giant Rat Ashes are unique in that enhancing the spirit ashes will increase their numbers.

With the arrival of Patch 1.08, Spirit Ashes can be used for PVP, but ONLY at matches held at the Caelid Colosseum. Both Limgrave Colosseum and Leyndell Colosseum prohibit the use of Spirit Ashes.

Ranking of all Spirit Ashes.

This is a community-editable rank of Spirit Ashes, the objective is to help the community identify the best performing and worst performing Ashes based on their FP consumption and overall viability.

  • This tier list has NOT been updated for patch 1.13 (as of 8/8/2024). Please keep that in mind when browsing this tier list. Some ashes may have greatly different placement than what is listed below. As always, use whatever you find fun to use, or suits your situation best.
  • For Damage testing, the spirits are fully upgraded and tested against the Draconic Tree Sentinel. Most were left alone against the Tree Sentinel for Damage, but extra capabilities were kept in mind for some Spirit Summons that aren't necessarily all about damage.
  • There are multiple Tiers and from best to worst going: S+, S, S-, A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-. S- is the only special category where the summons in this tier usually do something supportive or unique, where the main appeal isn't just the damage they deal. (ex. Finger Maiden Therolina Puppet.)
  • If 2 Spirits have roughly the same amount of Damage, Summoning cost will be compared. Currently, (June 2024) there are 84 Spirit Ashes.
  • Depending on the Playstyle of the Player and type of Enemy you summon your spirit against, tiers can easily change.
  • The most important part to remember is that Spirit Ashes are situational, and the tiering isn't always 100% reflective of every situation. It is best to try out different ashes if one isn't performing well. This tiering is just a general gauge of power and usefulness.

Crazy how these guys get hated for being “overpowered” and using any of them makes you a bad person.
But any other similarly overpowered strategy like; spellcasting, greatshields, even summoning online. Is all completely fine.

Almost makes you think these people are making completely arbitrary lines in the sand with no actual thought or reasoning behind them…

      • Anonymous

I really wished that these worked like that DSIII pokemon mod, as it stand these just exist to split aggro and nothing more

        • Anonymous

I think people memed themselves into thinking the point of these games is the difficulty. You were clearly meant to use summons, the game showers you with different ashes in practically every dungeon, and the fights are clearly balanced around it. If you go back to dark souls 1, you might be surprised to learn most main game bosses are absolute pushovers and that even Artorias is only around the level of Margit (if you're not overleveled for him, that is). Some ER bosses even use spirit ashes against you themselves, like Renalla and O'Neil. Not using ashes is basically the same thing as doing a soft challenge run.
I didn't actually use ashes first playthrough btw so i'm allowed to talk about this objectively. Nothing wrong with challenging yourself, but if you think it makes you better than other people or that they are playing the game wrong you are a loser.

          • Anonymous

one downside to summons is that if you walk into the arena and immediately summon, you lose your initiative. for example, the magma lizard that guards moonveil, he starts lying down. if you summon, he'll be up and ready by the time you get to it to attack, but if you wait to summon, you can get your initial attack.

            • Anonymous

I imagine it's really disheartening as a developer to put your heart and soul into a mechanic only for people to shame anyone who uses it because it's "cheating," despite it being part of the games design

              • Anonymous

As someone who prefers to solo bosses and goof off throughout levels, I never end up engaging with this mechanic and wish you could use them while going through a legacy dungeon. They really got everyone hyped for this flagship mechanic then said you can only actually use it during boss fights and in those stupid little pointless enemy camps.

Strength buolds are a bit different because you have hyperarmour and you can trade. Dexterity builds or magic builds you sort of need spirit summons to give yourself a long enough window to get in burst damage, as most of these weapons don't have any hyperarmour and the ashes of wars tend to have longer animations.

                  • Anonymous

I'm 73 and still love gaming - yeah, go figure. I love the open world and all the exploration, and it's a beautiful game. I no longer have my quake 3 reflexes and hand/eye coordination, hence the use of summons to help with all the seemingly impossible bosses. Down vote all you want, I could care less. I play how it's fun for me.

                    • Anonymous

I’m currently halfway run on NG+3 where my goal is to get bosses down with spirits only, me buffing and healing and allowed to yse craftables. One of the most fun and hilarous times! Some ashes are so bad it feels impossible.. and it is. But I recommend trying, makes fights feel so different.

                      • Anonymous

i think the game is more fun if you use summons. Strength builds have access to a lot of hyperarmour weapons so you can get away with being careless because you can still inflict damage via trades. Dex/Fth/Int builds mostly don't have access to hyperarmour weapons so using spirits to get in damage is waaaay more fun than painstakingly, perfectly dodging a 20 hit combo from a boss just to get ONE single attack in.

These should never have existed and they should never return, and you skilless scrubs downvoting this comment are the reason why

The fact that you can braindead lions claw a boss 4 times and then they're dead makes these completely useless. Just do co-op if you're afraid to fight something alone, they should have just added more npc summons instead.

However, Seamless invasions have made me forgive the addition of this casualized mechanic because now I can aura farm with my army of wandering nobles.

I'm a disabled, retired veteran with arthritic hands and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and too old to be playing video games. Nevertheless, I've been playing Elden Ring - since it's release to PS - albeit slowly. My hands move slowly on the controller and my brain is slow to make those split-second decisions. I use spirit summons for almost every boss fight. Not *ALL* of them, just most of them. I could not have completed the base game nor DLC without them. My favs: Greatshield Soldier, Horned Warrior, Banished Knight Oleg, Black knight Commander Andreas (for the Furnace Golems), Latenna, Kristoff, and Taylew. I do no longer use the Mimic nor Tiche, but I LOVED them both back in the day.
IMO - if you like Spirit Summons, use them! I pretend they are an old Army buddy come to help me out. And after each use, hopefully before they vanish, I bow in thanks. For me, they add another layer of story. They're fun!

tiche is the best one in the game, mimic is overrated and does not do much untill you spend 8 ghost gloveworts. then again getting mimic is quite easy

I think they trivialize the game too much. On the other hand, some of the bosses (especially the duos) feel kinda BS without them. A middle ground would be better for my taste.

I sometimes feel like a scrub using spirit ashes. Then I get to farum azula and remember the godskin duo is a mandatory boss... anyways ringalingaling

i like using skeleton summons and seeing if their dinky little spears alongside some mediocre healing can let them defeat gods

Buys open world exploration and fighting game, presses a button to make A.I. do the boss fighting for them, doesn't learn boss patterns and proper dodging/parrying, either still loses and says ER design is bad and too hard OR somehow feels accomplished if boss fight is won with the help of AI split aggroing the boss.

Idea: reverse cheesing the mimic tear bossfight, you make it cloned you when you have your best stuff, then dequip everything and see how you like being cheesed!

I love using Tiche, Yolan and Anna, and the fire knight dude (not Queelign). Tiche is the summon I beat Malenia with. Every dislike on this comment is a maidenless loser who lives in his mom's basement who likes ganking other people in online and who probably thinks they are a gigachad for beating consort radahn by shield poking behind their shield of solitude and adamantine armor from temu.

You know, I love how many there are despite most being overshadowed and probably will never be used by anyone. Like the nomad, or the fingercreeper, or the warhawk. Yet I like their addition + this is a very good way to add lore to the games enemies and characters

I'm trying to put together a revenant build from the character in night reign. Who do you think I should use for the big skeleton? The other two are obvious being the page and the mad pumpkin Head. I was thinking of just going with the great shield soldiers since it feels the same role of a rather immobile tank. I also plan on using one of the soldier summons as a fill-in for her passive

It's a shame that this item encourages low skill play, because new players will choose to rely on Spirit Ashes to do fighting for them instead of actually buildcrafting, or learning enemy parry patterns. It's really a shame because it goes against Miyazaki's intended vision for the game. Summoning is an under-appreciated art. To those who don’t understand and willfully cast stones, mind your own business. To those of us with curiosity and joy in our hearts, channel the ash. I wish there were more details about the unique interactions that several of the summons have. Like Latenna using enemy wolves as a mount, or the pumpkinhead frenzy mechanic. I guess I’ll have to find all of the cool secrets myself.

The fact that they respawn (just like the skeleton enemies) is really underrated

It would be nice also if they were separated into the two different categories of Standard and Renowned spirits, but that's asking for a lot. This might be the most valuable piece of information though, and it's missing.

She gets absolutely RAGDOLLED by some of the more aggressive, hard hitting ones like Gaius or Scadu Avatar, not to mention her standard attacks do pathetic damage (even in the base game) and destined death is nerfed while in the shadow realm. I tried her vs PCR one time and she got demolished long before phase 2 even triggered and had similar results with Gaius. Bosses like Messmer, Rellana, and Romina are highly mobile so she straight up misses most of her normal attacks and whiffs nearly all of her death blades in addition to their attacks knocking her down frequently. She's not the uber-tier summon she used to be.

                                                                                • Anonymous

not just their in-game effectiveness, most are also kinda lacking in terms of visual wow-factor imo.
I've always wanted a Runebear spirit, though it would be hilariously overkill in terms of dps, stagger & stance-damage.. maybe balance it by toning down its normally super aggro behavior.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Nothing was risked, nothing was gained and the hollow victory you've achieved is a far cry from what could've been if you trusted yourself more. Don't just skim through the game as if you're consuming a product. There is no rush, you don't have to finish it in a week. Games like Elden Ring are rare, so take your time. Dive into it fully and experience all it has to offer. Explore different options, weapons and styles, and only then call for help. You'll see the difference.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

Controversial paradoxical system. I've played all Souls games before, offline(no PS+), rarely used npc summons at first, none later. So Spirit Ashes were ambiguous for me. But since my controller is broken and sabotages me, I had to use summons, and oh it makes some fights to become Pacifist tun.
Spirits Ashes should COST status parameters (a % of the player stats like HP, SP, AP, all attack and defense, less Souls/Runes as reward) and make the enemy more aggressive to the player. That way the difficulty would be more balanced.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Just found out about spirit ashes and I won't lie- I'm not all too enamoured with them. They feel like an unnecessary addition, as I felt the standard 'summon outside of a boss gate' is a simpler system that is much easier to balance... this works too, and does what it does well enough, but I felt it was a tad unnecessary when a similar system already existed. I suppose it does help to relieve an unreasonably hard boss? Don't mistake this as me hating the system, just feeling it was redundant or unnecessary. At most I would venture to say that I would have preferred dev time be spent on other things within the game, but that's something everyone can say for almost anything, so I recognize that it is a subjective argument with similarly subjective value. I don't hate spirit ashes, but I don't care for them either.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

This is the worst noob list I've ever seen.

Ornis is at least S and Inquistors is a C tier since they dont even survive Margit or Godrick's first phases.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Most of his attacks have life drain, which means the boss loses 2% Hp minimum. Great for bosses like Mohg and Fire Giant.

He can beat Mohg as long as you hug Mohg to keep agro and dodge his attacks while casting great heals between combos. Make sure to use Golden vow and Protection of the erdtree every 90 seconds to greatly decrease Mohgs fire damage. Blessings boon for bonus life regen.

A tier summon without buffing, S tier when buffed up.

Half the time they will just stand there and do nothing, or walk endlessly into a random wall.

I got no grave gloveworts but I got a full stack of ghost gloveworts & no "special ashes" to use them on. Like Blaidd, Alexander, Millicent, Melina? I'd enjoy it just because at the endgame I kinda feel lonely without their company.

Aside from their health pool they pummel whatever you put them up against with no issues whatsoever. If you want something for "squad missions" though, (e.g. traversing zamor ruins mostly in stealth) the Leyndell soldiers have better survivability at the cost of offensive capability.

It just doesn't make sense. There's no difficulty setting, style meter or special item you get. Spirit Ash users are factually better at the game than you and me because they're actually engaging with the most powerful mechanic. And if that somehow wounds your ego, you need to rethink how you got to a point where it's based on your performance in Miyazaki's Poison Swamp Simulator 5.

USE SPIRIT ASHES IF YOU WISH!! Seriously, why are people acting like this isn't a ROLE PLAYING GAME, do what you want. If your build involves spirits, then summon, if you want to do it solo, then do it solo. Trying to say someone shoudln't enjoy the game because they don't enjoy the game the way you do, is dumb!! Let people play a game and stop bothering them over their prefered way to play it. So i say, thank you spirit ashes, for allowing more people to play the game.

I like how some of the ashes' behavior displays who they were before they passed. Whenever you're fighting a group Oleg will stop fighting his current opponent if you get hit by someone and start wailing on that person instead. Essentially, he's just trying to keep you alive, and is the opposite of red-eyed summons like Ogha.

Which is not a bad thing, but a lot of people in the community will get salty over this statement, apparently because it downplays their sense of achievement and pride in beating this "super hard" game. Yes, it's definitely the toughest experience in all fromsoft series on par with Sekiro, but only if you play solo. On my 1st playthrough I was struggling real hard with Malenia, so I decided to use Mimic Tear and rivers of cheese, defeated her instantly, and it felt like I just cheated. There was little to no skill involved, just luck and L2 mashing, no "getting gud" feeling, I regretted it. To this day I wonder how can some people be happy and proud about beating the game like that? If we consider summons to be base game mechanic that everyone should use unless they want to make the game artificially more difficult, then it's really sad
