Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirit Notes & Tips
- Ranged attacks can ease a fight against these enemies.
- Leyndell, Royal Capital Encounter: Force the boss to spawn by entering the graveyard, then immediately turn around and run back across the bridge. Take a right and enter the room with the assassin's throwing lightning pots and climb the ladder.
- Leave out through the golden double gate doors and immediately roll to the right to dodge a knights arrow. Jump on the railing in front of you and down onto the clay roof tiled building in front of you.
- From there ranged attacks can be targeted on him.
- Highly recommend long range spells and skills from afar.
- Stay on its sides to avoid most of its moveset.

AnonymousYet another cheese for Stormveil: Clear the rats (must have). Run through, climb the ladder, make your way back across the yard to Liftside Grace through the once-locked door and descend. Bring a bow with range 50 plus two sets of fitting arrows, maybe plus other ranges options. Climb onto some of the ruins where the Scarab was, aggro the Spirit with the bow, and add spells / incantations as you need. Bows: Hornbow for Int builds (also, easy option, no fights needed to get it) and Serpent Bow (go into Abandoned Cave with no runes, red flasks, just grab it). AoW is optional if you can poison/burn it from the high ground. The actual challenge lues in crossing the yard :)

AnonymousThe one in stormveil castle was funny, I tried running back to the big face, he chased me, hit one time, then suddenly forgot I was there and walked back to his guard place. Poisoned him.

Can be one-shotted in the DLC by the flame of SoNF with the Rellana's Cameo. Just did 21268 damage to the Belurat's with not optimal buffs (Golden Vow + FGMS).

AnonymousWhoever designed the hitbox on these really needs an easier job.

Anonymouswhy isnt the haligtree one before the drainage channel listed here

AnonymousIt looks like one big blob to me. Can't make out any limbs or weapons or weak points. Just a big blob that flies across the room and spins like crazy.

AnonymousThe second one in the sunken chapel is as close as a flat out game cheat boss as you will find. This thing had a sliver of health and took no less than 3 l2s , with moonveil to kill. It was hilarious. Plenty of fp. Second warning, when it's health is low, it can turn in a dime, from anywhere, through walls , and snatch you and 1 shot kill you. Use rot breathe, run and hide. Wish the devs would add difficulty on fights with bosses with more enemies and strategy than resorting to input readers and inescapable boss moves where it disappears, zips across the arena, and 1 shot you while drinking flask. Also, I should be able to dodge roll, if timed right ,any attack from enemy and that is not the case in dlc.

AnonymousA shame they overused these guys yet again in the DLC, because their new model looks really good. I love their thicker bark shells and the tree stump jutting out of their necks.

AnonymousThis one was so stupidly easy. I think it hit me one time. I just kept holding forward

Anonymous
AnonymousI understand re-using animations and assets is a huge time saver but this enemy did not need to be fought more than 10+ times throughout the main game and DLC (Incl. Rot variants)

Anonymousreally thought there would be a cool underwater enemy in shadow keep. but no, ctrl C

Anonymousdid you like how they just pasted these things everywhere in the lands between? wanna see them do it again?

Anonymous
AnonymousFextra sure has aome interesting ideas on what's 'humanoid'. At least the revenant has human body parts... What's so human about a slug with monkey arms?

AnonymousFrom what I've seen, there are 4 of these in the dlc:
- One unique poisonous variant in Belurat, in the flooded poison section with all of the man-flies.
- Two regular types in the church district of the Shadow Keep.
- One regular type beneath the Ellac Greatbridge.
AnonymousThe one in the Haligtree was so annoying, I eventually decided to cheese it. I didn't think it would work because initally it followed me up top in a prevjous try. Right as I spawned it, I went to the tip on the left side cliff and spammes Giantsflame Take Thee. He tried to get to me but never connected, the only thing that could connect was its big aoe. Rot in eternal giant flame hell.

AnonymousIn the Ashen Capital I managed to get one with the glowing eyes for bonus runes. The eyes were in the head, but they still left those motion trails. Gave like 93k runes on NG.

Anonymouskilled this fker pretty easy with death's poker aow. just stood on the cliff and sent the r1 version at it. it died without ever hitting me

AnonymousFor the one near Haligtree, I agree it is better to endure the rot. And using reduvia (+10) was the best option for me.

Anonymous
AnonymousFor the one in Halgtree, I ended up just standing in the scarlet rot and tanking it instead of trying to stay on land just to get thrown off the edge.

AnonymousA prime example of bs boss design. They are insanely annoying to fight.
It would not be an issue if Fromsoft didn´t copy paste them into every second corner of the map.
Anonymous
You can cheese the one in miquella's haligtree by standing on the cliff on the left and spamming mohgs spears ash of war

Anonymous
AnonymousThese things suck. They're just all of the BS of Bloodborne enemy design rolled in to one. Stupidly huge, ridiculously fast, constantly flailing around like a spastic, grabs, breath attack.

AnonymousI encountered 5 in the Ashen Capital after going back up the stairs and regenerating up to full. There is more than 3.

AnonymousFor the one in the Haligtree you need to beat for Millicent's quest: there is a small safe area down by it's tail with no scarlet rot. You can cast poison mist (took me 2 casts to proc) and then just keep recasting once it wears off. It will never aggro or go into phase 2. Takes a long time but if you have youtube or something on a 2nd screen it's totally painless.

AnonymousThanks for the tips all for the Haligtree one. My way: get up the lower branch to the main one ASAP. Break out Lion Greatbow and with Radahn's Rain...well...let the great arrows rain down.

AnonymousThe one in the Haligtree, I activated the fight and ran back to the tree branch and just shot at it with frozen arrows. Died after a few minutes.

Anonymousfor the one in haligtree the branch thing does work. i used frost arrows to kill him without it taking too long. make sure to be far enough back cuz after he hits half health it just feels like hes still gonna get you because he GOES NUTS...

Anonymousthese things are easier to dodge than they appear, they move around like crazy but they don't target you all that well apart from the bite move. focus on that one and otherwise you can mostly get away with circling opposite their own constant circling. you know, provided you aren't in a tiny rot swamp arena miles away from the nearest grace that forces you to trudge through another rot swamp to reach it.

Anonymous**** this garbage ass mini boss i spammed frost bite 10 mins on him and final blow was a jump from the root to head double sword blow. you just have to run him around the branches in a circle, otherwise u cant do ****

Anonymousfor the one at the haligtree what i did was after it came out of the lake i immediatly ran back to the branch and jumped on there. it couldnt hit me so i just used black flame and it took me a couple minutes to kill it. i was playing a melee character so i just used a bunch of talismans + the faith boosting wondrous physick tear.

Anonymouspulley bow + burred bolts can make quick work of the one in elphael

AnonymousWhat absolute psychopath was so proud of this screenblocking, wall clipping absolute turd of a boss that they felt the need to paste it in eight times?
I'd honestly rather something else get the Godefroy treatment.
I'd rather see Starbotherer Rabarn and the Pyre Giant, or Astel Redheaded Stepchild of the Void. Hell, I'd even take Malenia Blade of Micolash at this point.
Just not another damn tree spirit.
AnonymousFound a nifty way of getting rid of Elphael one with my melee character:
-get the beast to show up by going into the pool
-retreat to the cliff and use dragon ice incantation, even non magic characters should get the hp down to half after a while. Used 3 or 4 cerulean flasks.
-get to the right side cliff (looking from the direction you came from)
-use melee attacks on the beast when it puts its nose too close, you’re pretty safe there anyway
AnonymousFor the Elphael one, there is a way to go back to the big branch on the right side of the arena.
Proc the spawn and then run back to the main branch, most attacks can't hit you there.
If you have a melee build, wait for the fist smash and use your single best attack. Repeat until dead.
AnonymousWith how many corpses that've turned undead due to the Prince of Death and his deathroot, do we think these might be dragons mangled by the old roots of the Erdtree/Crucible? It feels too coincidental for a big serpentine monster that breathes fire and attacks with claws to not be somewhat draconic, especially with how close dragons were to the Crucible. Might even explain why there are so many in Lleyendel, since the dragon cult was founded there and... Well, Gransax and everything.

AnonymousWhy do they insist on copy pasting the worst designed stuff lol

Anonymous
AnonymousThe one in Elphael is harder to beat than Malenia, and they have the gall to call it "lesser" hahah

Easiest way to deal with the one on Ephael is using Dragonfire incantation, just circle around the arena with some spacing and he will go down in 5-6 casts

Anonymous
AnonymousI’m really bad at fighting these, but I like them because the animation is so interesting and visceral.

AnonymousEnemies are either fun to fight against or really boring and messy to fight against. The Tree Spirits is, without a doubt, one of the worst enemy found through the entire series. Clipping through the ground and walls, their only real attack is just them becoming an active hitbox and taking up a gross amount of your screen.
Elden Ring is a fun and interesting game, but enemy design like this bring down its overall quality.
Anonymous"Very easy enemy if using ranged attacks."
This has not been my experience at all. The one in Stormveil is much harder than Godrick.
Anonymousthe one in haligtree is nowhere near worth it, only 31k runes with silver scarab, and one most likely superfluous by then golden seed, personally already maxed out my flasks, coupled with a tiny arena with the center being a damn rot swamp, which makes dodging the often deadly grab near impossible, or fight it while also dealing with scarlet rot, which will only make it needlessly harder, when not puching you out the arena, falling to your death, save your time, don't even try fighting this one, or cheese it by going back on the roots and sniping it, putrid spirits had more interesting loot, namely the rotten staff colossal weapon, and a lord"s rune

Anonymous
AnonymousThese are some of the worst designed fights in the game because the camera won't focus on the part of the enemy that telegraphs every attack (it's head), and the arena sizes make it so most of your screen is just branches clipping into the camera. The fight is okay when the arena area is larger and makes it significantly easier, but even then this enemy feels ~70% finished. My advice for the ones in tiny arenas is just to get over leveled, it makes them way less frustrating.
Just a side note, I personally feel that the Ulcerated Tree Spirit Trio in the Ash Capital is the most cancerous fight in the game. This is because the nearest sight of grace is the lift to the forbidden lands, so you need to take 2 elevators down and walk the entire way there past several enemies, and you don't get torrent. The entire run back for this trio fight is around 1-2 minutes, and a lot of that is waiting for the elevators. Once you get there you have to fight at least one of these in a cramped area, but there are two more waiting in the ash. And there is no stake of Marika so you need to do the whole run back again if you die. The best part is that I don't think they drop anything aside from runes, but I couldn't say for sure because I refuse to do the fight.
AnonymousNot hard but the camera has a stroke trying to track them while they flail around all over the place.

AnonymousHardest part of these guys in a confined space is that they end up pushing me into (actually I think once through) the wall and I can't see anything. Out in the open, piece of cake. Rotten Breath and bravely run away.

Anonymouswas so disappointed when killing all three in the ashen capital didn’t drop anything :(

AnonymousI've found these are all extremely susceptible to Scarlet Rot. One proc and enough time will usually do them in. Rot Breath or a good supply of Rot Arrows, along with a good spot to retreat to while it does it's thing trivializes these guys.

AnonymousThe bridge tip is wrong, this is not valid for the Stormveil catacombs one.

Anonymous
AnonymousThe tree spirit inside the capital near the avenue balcony site of grace on journey 4(ng+3) drops 33170 runes

AnonymousThe 1 in the capital outskirts near the outer wall phantom tree site of grace on journey 4(ng+3) drops exactly 29768 runes

AnonymousThe bottom eddit isn't stormveil castle, that's how to defeat the one in lyndell capital...

AnonymousEven if its not a boss the one in Stormveil Castle is no joke if you're on a melee character. At about 50 percent it gets what looks like a holy aura around it and starts adding an enhanced breath attack and occasionally an good sized AOE where light erupts from the ground, seems if your in between the patches you can be safe but its best out range it and then go back in after. Managed to down him with a long sword and shield. Fire pots also do a nice bit of damage though best to front load those at the start of the fight as you pull him and he turns to face you. Also the sides are a safer spot but you need to watch which way he moves.

AnonymousFor mages, the one in Leyndell is easily killed by triggering him, running back inside the building, and then free-aiming Loretta's Greatbow to hit him through the doorway. Just stand back far enough so that he can't hit you through the wall.
The three in Ashen Leyndell are easily killed by triggering them, baiting them toward the upward sloping path, and firing Rock Sling over the railing. Jumped on the little planters while doing this to get extra height. A little slow, but it works if you don't want to run past them.
AnonymousThey aren’t hard themselves but man the places they were put in is some bs. The one in the area you help Millicent in that is some bs and a half.

AnonymousBest way to cheese is get Poison Mist, drop down and RUN for the ladder on the opposite side of the room.
Let him calm down and stare at the spot you dropped down at...then sneak up behind him and cast poison mist while standing just at his tail. Over and over. he never notices.
Anonymousanother strategy at stormveil is using delayed spells and then running to the ladder, rinse and repeat. I used the glintsone blade sorcery (super easy to get, from miriel i think), able to cast 3 times before running back to the ladder, and only got damaged once (ladder..user error).

Anonymousthat moment you learn the 3 in the capital of ash respawn.
That was a harder fight than Melania.
Anonymous"Stormveil Castle Encounter: Force the boss to spawn by entering the graveyard, then immediately turn around and run back across the bridge. Take a right and enter the room with the assassin's throwing lightning pots and climb the ladder.
Leave out through the golden double gate doors and immediately roll to the right to dodge a knights arrow. Jump on the railing in front of you and down onto the clay roof tiled building in front of you.
From there ranged attacks can be targeted on him
"
What is all of this referring to? Surely not the Stormveil tree spirit, None of this matches the area it's in. It's at the bottom of a pit with no way out except a ladder, there's no bridges or buildings or knights or any of that crap.
AnonymousOk, nobody is acknowledging it, WHAT THE ACTUAL **** is that eldritch horror corpse it was protecting in stormveil castle?

Anonymous"This is a Tree Spirit!"
"Miyazaki, this is the seventh time in a row you've shown a Tree Spirit in Elden Ring."
AnonymousI hate these, and the fact they are reused so much is making me hate them even more. Awful design.

AnonymousThe one in Grand Cloister doesn't seem to always spawn. Not sure if it's a bug, as I've managed to fight it when summoned as a spirit a few times.

AnonymousPoison works. Run past and get on the ladder until it forgets about you, then sneak up on it's tail and poison with incantations. You won't be noticed!

AnonymousI came to this page from Sorcerer Rogier's page, & the hyperlink text said "Root Monster"
I knew it was talking about the Ulcerated Tree Spirit, and that "Root Monster" wasn't its name, so I clicked the link expecting it to take me to a 404 error
But no, it auto-redirected from /Root+Monster to /Lesser+Ulcerated+Tree+Spirit
It makes me really happy to see these pages get more & more fleshed out! Both with info about the game & the interconnectivity of all the pages for the new wiki
AnonymousMe fighting this thing for the 5th time knowing that all i just have to do is stay underneath his armpit and wack him till it dies "Ah ****, here we go again."

Anonymous
You can find one in haligtree in a pool of rot. I´m wondering if anyone managed to kill that with full melee str based build :D

AnonymousHow many more minibosses are there in this game who just jump around and spam bs magic?

AnonymousYou can range cheese if you are able to get up the ladder and unlocked the door leading into the armour with the two axe guards. Run all the back and just shoot him on the ledge.

AnonymousIf you go through the fog gate that requires a stonesword key near where the grafted scion resides after you aggro this guy, you can actually drop fire bombs onto it from way above it by looking down off the ledge outside that room. I just kept crafting fire bombs and dropping them until he died. Took about 5 min or so idk but it got me the seed and the runes

AnonymousBleed works, and it can be poisebroken with about 4-5 jumping attacks from a morning star.

AnonymousWhile I was fighting him he got stuck in the wall and stopped attacking me, guess he forgot to git gud!

It also appears at foot of the waterfall next to the Grand Cloister Site of Grace at the Lake of Rot.

Anonymous
AnonymousThere is another one at the bottom of the Stranded Graveyard dungeon, which is accessed using two stone keys.
Quite an annoying dungeon.
My strategy is to stay very close to the abdomen, on the side, dodge towards him, and jump to execute an attack.
After a few hits it is stunned and can be skewered with a critical hit.
At this point, keep your distance to avoid its explosive attack.
Once the explosive attack has passed, you have to return to the short distance, continuing with the jump attacks.
To do everything even more safely, it is better to always keep the shield up, instead of being greedy and taking risks holding the weapon with two hands.
AnonymousI just got a bug where, upon visceral attacking/Riposte it while it was half clipped though the wall right after its dive/lunge move it stopped moving or attacking

Anonymous
AnonymousPlaying as a squishy sorcerer, hopefully this helps others who are struggling with the Root Monster in Stormveil Castle.
Drop into the spawn room past the rats in the basement, run straight for the ladder and keep going up. He will spawn and aggro, but can't reach up very far. Come all the way back to the arena (past the rats), he should still be there.
Don't drop down. Get the spell or ranged weapon of your choice and cheese. Even its lightning breath can't reach you up there (although the lightning burst at the start of phase 2 might, so be sure to back up when he starts up).
Good luck y'all.
I utterly destroyed him with my Grave Scythe (2 handed). Stay on his tail and he will die quickly.

AnonymousIf you have a good shield (I used turtle shell shield) you can tank all of its attacks in the first phase. In its 2nd phase it will do damage through your shield but keep it up because it's a lot less than getting outright smacked. I also stayed under its left armpit most of the fight and it missed a lot. Still takes some time though.

AnonymousRan past onto the massive fossilized head, spammed some spells, ran up the ladder to de aggro, then got in very close with melee. Perhaps he was partly stuck in the wall? The items weren't massively exciting.

AnonymousKilled him by running past and dropping aggro using the ladder in the back. Came back down threw 1 fireball and ran back to ladder to drop aggro again. Repeated for like 10mins lol. Drops a Golden Seed for sure and I think a few thousand souls.

Anonymous

Pest-thread spheres worked well. Took out the three Leyndell, Royal Capital ulcerated tree spirts with them and a bit of dodging.
