Red Bear is a Great Enemy Boss in Elden Ring. Red Bear is a humanoid boss who glows white and almost looks like wears a fur coat from a bear and is found in the Northern Nameless Mausoleum. This is an optional boss as players don't need to defeat it to advance in Shadow of the Erdtree.

See Red Bear Lore

Elden Ring Red Bear Boss

  • This is an optional boss
  • This is a Tarnished boss: its stats and attacks work like a player character with equipped items
  • Closest Site of Grace: Temple Town Ruins
  • Multiplayer is allowed for this boss
  • You cannot summon Spirit Ashes for this boss

Elden Ring Red Bear Location

Head east from the Temple Town Ruins, and you'll find a sealed spiritspring that will help you get to the top of a plateau; the seal is located on an upward path off to the right, behind a broken wall. Once broken, you can jump to the top. The Northern Nameless Mausoleum is in the center. [Map Link]

Red Bear Combat information

Defenses

The defense numbers are compared to the incoming attack power to determine how much to scale down the damage. The higher the ratio, the more damage comes through.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through a nd 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Red Bear Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Red Bear:

Melee Users

To effectively defeat Red Bear as a melee character in Elden Ring, focus on using quick strikes and maintaining distance when necessary. Red Bear is extremely fast during attacks and takes brief pauses in between. However, it is relatively slow when moving towards you, giving you time to prepare for its next move. At the end of each string of attacks, be prepared to retaliate with a quick strike while he prepares for the next move. This boss can also heal with a Flask once per match.

As Red Bear approaches, be ready to anticipate its attacks. One of its most common moves is the Two-Claw combo, where it slashes from left to right. As the fight progresses, this combo adapts into a four-hit sequence, adding upward and downward slashes. Its most powerful attack is the Bear Roar, where it takes out the head of Ralva the Great Red Bear, causing high damage in a wide area twice. This attack is dangerous, so keep your distance when you see it being prepared.

The key to defeating Red Bear is to match its agility and time your attacks perfectly. After each combo, Red Bear pauses for a split second, providing a brief window for you to counterattack. Use this opportunity to land a few hits before retreating. A good strategy is to lure Red Bear towards you, letting it chase you until you are within range to attack quickly. This tactic often breaks its poise, allowing you to deliver multiple attacks. However, remain observant and cautious, as Red Bear can counter your attacks effectively.

Magic and Ranged Users

Immediately upon entering the boss arena, attack the Red Bear with Rotten Breath. It may take two or three volleys for it to become afflicted. The boss will swap its left armament to a finger seal before it casts Roar of Rugalea. This will give you another opportunity to cast Rotten Breath. Spamming Flame of the Redmanes from a safe distance will drain the remainder of his health bar. In order gain enough stats for Rotten Breath, sorcerers can equip items such as Silver Tear Mask, Marika's Soreseal, and the Heirloom talismans.

Red Bear Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
2 Claw Combo Red Bear slashes you with a combo from left and right. Due to the quickness of this attack, the best counter is to move backward once you see Red Bear running towards you. Don't try to roll too much here as you want to be able to retaliate at the end of this move.
4 Claw Combo Red Bear slashes you with a combo from left, right, upward, and downward. Due to the quickness of this attack, the best counter is to roll backward once you see this attack coming.
Ground Slam The quickness of this attack is almost the same as the claw combos. Red bear leaps and quickly slams the ground below you. You can counter this by rolling to either left or right once Red Bear leaps through the air.
Roar of Rugalea Summons a large bear head that lets out a roar, damaging anything close-by. You can counter this by observing the boss and once you see him summon the bear, immediately roll to either left or right as far as you can.

Fang Helm

Helm of Red Bear, whose name is lost to madness. The cheek guards are shaped after lion fangs. Perhaps his fascination with the untamed strength of the wild stemmed from his past as a Redmane.

Iron Rivet Armor

Chest armor of Red Bear, whose name is lost to madness. A vest reinforced with iron rivets. After killing the great red bear in a blood-soaked bout, he became fascinated by the untainted glory of its naked strength. "I wish to be a bear, no more, and no less."

Pelt of Ralva

The pelt of Ralva the Great Red Bear, worn upon the head without modification. Enhances incantations of what is jokingly called "Bear Communion." This untreated hide, won at the end of a bloody bout, is just the thing to make a wild bear out of a warrior.

Red Bear's Claw

Claw of a great red bear wielded without modification by Red Bear, whose name is lost to madness. After killing the great red bear in a blood-soaked bout, he became fascinated by the untainted glory of its naked strength. "I wish to be a bear, no more, and no less"

Roar of Rugalea

An incantation of what is jokingly called "the bear communion." Channels the power of Rugalea, the great red bear. Transform oneself into a great red bear and emit a mighty roar. Charging increases potency. An incantation that is more akin to the divine invocation of the hornsent than it is to the Dragon Communion. Only through desperate battle with the feral wild can one discover a god unique to oneself.

You cant get to this boss without torrent. Such bullshit. Im forced to use a easy mode mechanic just to get to a part of the map.. so dumb

Magic users: Use Zamor's Ice Storm (weapon skill). Trivial because it stun locks him. You just have to have enough FP to spam it but any mage will.
When I did this I didn't even have magic damage or +INT in my flask. But I did have the dancing beast talisman that increases storm damage.

          POISE 33?

What does that even mean if he NEVER gets stance broken? Stance damage seems to interrupt his animations but that's about all it does.

          • Anonymous

Why make it a bossfight to begin with then? What's the point if you just repeatedly spam the same attack until the end?

            • Anonymous

Literally just used a greatsword's R2 to dominate this fight on the first try. Don't let people act like these bosses are "too hard".

              • Anonymous

Cold milday with wing stance, stanced R2 when he's running towards you + Adula's moonblade when he's in the air (it will knock him down) or when he's going to do the bear roar, - it will knock him out of it. The projectiles hit even of he's practically on the other side of the room.

Tried initially Blasphemous Blade AoW and the dude took the hits but just keep coming only to 1-shot you while your non-infinite stamina regen'd. Gave up and used Sacred Relic Sword AoW which staggered and obliterated his ass back to the bear cave. Dude has around 60k hit points as I did around 20 L2's for 3k damage each time! BTW Sacred Relic Sword AoW wrecks pretty much every Invader/Maus boss with infinite stamina but you guys already knew that!

when will From understand that NPC boss fights just don’t work? how many times will it take for them to understand what hot garbage it objectively is?

your inputs wont count half the time on clean hits. He has hyper armor when he simply moves , like old blood hound step before nerfs . L2, L2, L2 to defeat it. they needed to be more creative in creating difficulty, not this hot garbage . imput reads and infinite hyper armor are not fun in game. i have 0 sense of accomplishment L2ing these enemies to death.

Got eviscerated about 10 times in a row. Proceeded to put giant's hunt on my zweihander and rolled him the very next try.

Cheesy but I tried fighting fairly. He has virtually infinite stam so I didn't deem it a fair fight anymore. What a beast though. He's stronger than a f*cking rune bear.

I'm on NG+5(?) I used heavy greatsword with Lion's Claw ash and spammed that skill attack to flatten him. Came in with flask to eliminate stamina consumption but even with 5-6 hits in a row he never staggered!?! No boss in the game can take those hits and not get stunned... except him. I finally got him. Man what a tank. I'm lvl 376.

Pretty obnoxious to fight fairly. Guy never stops attacking, never runs out of stamina, and is ridiculously aggressive. If he corners you with the roar, it's a free win for him.

                              • Anonymous

Jeesh... I-frames for miles... I am running a backhand build and it's like I was attacking nothing but air.. Finally got him though..

Treat Red Bear the same way you treat any hyperaggressive boss. Equip a brass shield and an enhanced antspur rapier (I use cold for Red Bear). Don't bother with skills or spells. Keep your shield up, manage your stamina, and do R1 pokes after you've sidestepped or rolled his unblockables. Almost all attacks can be interrupted. The roar can be rolled sideways. Stay close to him.

The rot and cold will get him down. For added insult, wear the Red Bear pelt on your head.

Fun boss. Basically a one trick pony with his Bear Roar. One of the few cases of The Best Defende is Offense. DON'T let him ROAR. Stay allways close enough to be able to reach with an attack before he can fully execute the roar animation. Don't bother with rolling, just interrupt him. Quit easy boss if you don't let him yell at you. The roar attack has two waves that one shot me at 60 vigor at 60% dmg negation (scadu lvl 5 and DMG negation flask)

What is with this guy's AI?? It feels like he keeps locking on to some imaginary point behind me/to the side to circle behind me. I've never seen anything like it in this game, it feels like he's trying to circlestab me DS1 style. Is it a clever trick they implemented to make him really hard to parry or am I going nuts

Casters can spam Stars of Ruin and keep distance. It'll force him to spam roll and delete his opportunities to attack you.

On NG+ and DLC+ , I counted (after capturing the fight on video) the damage inflicted.

                                          ( I couldn't prevent their healing. )

So, after healing, the damage inflicted was more than NG Consort Radahn (if the wiki is accurate on that information )

                                          It's exactly 46152.

It might not be completely accurate, because I can't really say how much damage was overkill, the final hit inflicted 1232 damage, and it didn't seem to overkill by much. I believe the deviation to be ~100/200 damage, at most.

For casters, or really anyone who can meet the reqs, Adula's or Carian Greatsword doublecast trivializes this guy. Staff in each hand, R1, L1, R1, etc. Repeat until dead. He will only be able to attack you if you run out of FP or Stamina, otherwise he'll spend the whole fight stunned, unable to even drink his flask. For added effect, use two Glintstone Staves, he won't live long if you've got decent INT.

With a colossal weapon you can just two hand and dash attack him which will always stagger him and he can't do much since only his roar is a ranged attack. Run at him, attack, retreat, rinse and repeat. Though if you whiff he's gonna make you pay lol

                                                                    • Anonymous

In a DLC filled to the brim with generic names such as "Death Knight", "Divine Dancing Beast Lion", "Ancient Dragon-Man" and "Golden Hippopotamus", "Red Bear" comes off as the low point in terms of creativity, not just in terms of the generic boss moveset, but the name itself was my tipping point. I was malding by the end of this fight and I destroyed this fool in one minute but the name was so distractingly common and lame that I couldn't help it. They must have hired the biggest bozo in Japan to come up with some of the names for these bosses.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

can't attack you if he's being constantly grappled

                                                                            • Anonymous

Kept my distance and used Greatsword of Solitude's skill Solitary Moon Slash as he came close,R2 to knock him back then charged R2 attack when he was getting up and then dodged away to repeat, Easy kill

                                                                              • His damage has a bleeding effect. His skill 4 claws combo can "1 shot" you (because of the stun) in 2-3 succession. Overall this boss is satisfying to fight, especially if you're into parrying. He's very fast but also there are a few hit that has weird delays. If you missed it you'll be dead in mere 1-2 seconds.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Ironically, the Beast Claws absolutely wreck him. They'll flinch him out of pretty much any attack he makes, especially when using their default AoW.

Is his bear cloak in the game? I was awfully disappointed with the armor set he dropped compared to his figure.
