Moonveil is a Katana in Elden Ring. The Moonveil scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence and is a good Weapon for dealing melee Slash and Pierce Damage in Combat. Its accompanying unique skill can also allow the user to draw the weapon at great speed for an instant slash attack and fires off a wave of light.
Katana forged of glintstone.
Masterpiece of a Sellian swordsmith.
Light enwreathes the blade when sheathed, explaining its Moonveil moniker.
Where to Find Moonveil in Elden Ring
The Moonveil weapon can be found at the following location:
- Obtained upon defeating the Magma Wyrm located in Gael Tunnel - Caelid. [Map Link]
Elden Ring Moonveil Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Transient Moonlight - Sheathe blade, holding it at the hip in a composed stance. Follow up with either a normal or a strong attack to draw the blade at great speed for an instant slash attack. Both attacks fire off a wave of light, matching the orientation of the blade, with normal attacks firing a horizontal & short-range wave, and strong attacks firing a vertical & long-range wave that travels along the ground. The wave of light and melee swipe deal damage independently, allowing enemies to be hit by both for increased damage when in melee range.

Anonymous> lose to a player in PvP who uses Moonveil or any other int weapon/sorcery
> "people who use this or that have no skill"
it appears, my friend, that you are the one with skill issues if you can't beat people using things that are literally in the game
Anonymousshould have been sunveil longer more damage and a fire ability that throws the sun at enemies

Anonymous99% of my builds that are int are not int, they are disguised strength and dexterity builds(Dark Moonlight Greatsword and Moonveil)

AnonymousAll 20-25 year old aged males should use this, GOAT WEAPON

AnonymousDesignated int weapon before acquiring dark moon greatsword.

AnonymousIt's 2026 and casuals are still complaining about Moonveil even when it's far from being the most OP thing in pvp, LMFAO

AnonymousIf Moonveil exists, we needed a Sunlight to make a ballance between them.
And it should be a Straight Sword, with a Square Off that shoots flames with each use
AnonymousIt just does way too much. It's hard to focus on other people in gankfights when someone keeps spamming the strong attack from the backline and taking a third of your HP. The weapon itself is cool, its flashy, its powerful, but that unfortunately makes it very common on mages, and its nightmare for invaders who are midskill like me to deal with. Maybe just lowering the range of the strong attack specifically would balance it out a bit, since mages already have Comet and GGS and such, but unless From wants to to do a bit of balancing when TE comes out, we're unfortunately stuck dealing with this.

Anonymous
Anonymousi like weapons that are both very strong and fun to use, and this is one of them. a number of late-game bosses are too fast to be hit by a rellana's cameo boost (not counting the ones that simply stay out of range entirely), and going into stance against a bunch of weaker enemies is just asking to get stunlocked to death. also the bleed makes normal katana swings work well too, so you dont *need* fp and spacing to make this work. but its still SO STRONG with buffs, and spamming l2 + r2 still decimates. can be built to wreck shop, doesnt need to be used that way, and transient moonlight isnt one-size-fits-all win button. usually.

AnonymousAccording to my calculations, based on the movements of the stars, while doing met... I mean, MATH, here is a conclusion:
If you killed Elden Beasts, you did beat the game.
Therefore, if you used this weapon and killed Elden Beast, yes, you did beat the game.
In conclusion, use what you want. Those redditors, losers, lowkey gumbers, and low INT users who says the else are just too dumb to recognise that you did beat the game.
AnonymousI admit some players spam skills , but that doesn’t mean others don’t focus on strategy and dodging attacks.
Moonveil is easy to pick up , but it doesn’t make anything less valid .
Bosses fell because of skill, not someone else’s narrow definition of real play.
AnonymousThe only thing I don't understand about Moonveil is that how is it not categorized as a LEGENDARY weapon.

AnonymousGame with hundreds of different weapons, sorceries, incantations, ashes of war, armor sets, and different builds
>equip moonveil
>equip night comet and carian slicer
>equip carian knight armor
yep, time to game
AnonymousStart prisoner class (cause it gives the least level ups required) buy the broad sword from the beach merchant and spam square off to kill the magma wyrm that drops this, also buy fowlfoot from patches
Now do the cheese for the knights cav in caelid (I like to do the kukri cheese cause it's easier) and kill greyoll pop the gold foot on both for extra runes, there you go now you can wield it within minutes of starting the game
Anonymous
AnonymousGiven the name and the fact it comes from Sellia, can it be counted as a "Night Weapon" to go with the Night Sorceries ?

Anonymous
AnonymousThis weapon is strictly reserved for players with no skill.

AnonymousDudes used to hate on moonveil and then hop into pvp with bloodhounds step on a ugs with bull goat armor and barrier of gold and still get whooped as hard as the dude spamming a telegraphed and reactable magic dmg aow that goes in a straight vertical line.

Anonymous
Does the skill scale purely off of Int? If I want to stay as low level as possible will +10 with minimum stat requirements net me enough damage endgame?

AnonymousThis thing is barely stronger than literally any other option you have in-game. Are the haters okay?

AnonymousComments are so funny, I can't even put moonveil into an S tier because blasphemous exists. Almost nothing is worth S tier because of the OP red greatsword. And you still see the whiny 'oldschoolers' here.

AnonymousWhy do people call it op in PvE this thing does no damage? Even with rellana cameo

AnonymousThese comments lmfao so out of touch with reality, anyways you beat the game

AnonymousI like to use that and bubble sorceries. Not exactly very meta, but I don’t play much pvp so it’s ok.

Anonymous
AnonymousUsing this weapon on my first play through let me kill morgott in 2 tries

Reading the comments for this weapon makes me NEVER want to interact with this community

Anonymous
AnonymousUsing Transient Moonlight as your only form of attack makes you extremely predictable. It is a BLADE, not a staff! You deny your weapon its purpose! Let it taste blood! Quench its thirst!

AnonymousI wish this had frostbite build up instead of bleed. Just feels more thematic for a magic aligned katana. Might have even made it a bit more balanced in PvP but I doubt it (not that I care about PvP).

AnonymousAs wise master once told me in Tibet: "It's foolish to hate the game for the player's lack of dignity, as it would be foolish to blame the entirety of humankind for the murder of a single man because we invented knives and weapons. Toxicity is a choice, the problem is not that the game permits it to people, it is that people permit it to themselves."

AnonymousI use this in PvP because it has a low skill floor and decent synergy with many amazing spells like Magic Glintblade or Greatblade Phalanx for frame trapping and catching rolls for big damage. Katanas beyond Power Stance Nagakiba are not all that good in Elden Ring, they are much slower than something like a Shamshir and have comparable speed to Axes tragically enough, but in regards to Intelligence Builds, this is the best one that isn't just a Magic Nagakiba with something like Spinning Slash or Sword Dance on it. It's light weight and "low" requirements means it's perfect for a meta level wizard for reaching the 88 Poise threshold while still having 80 Intelligence, 60 Vigor, and a respectable amount of Mind to not immediately run out after casting Greatblade Phalanx twice.

AnonymousDamn it's been 3 years and ppl are still at war with each other over this katana, even though there are MULTIPLE ways to counter it already. It's absolutely pointless, but mind-numbingly entertaining af. I hope this goes on though lol, I like watching idiots from both sides fight over nothing.

Anonymousidk how you can get mad at someone for only using the ash of war, as if it isnt the only remotely noteworthy part of the weapon

AnonymousI've never really understood the hate that this weapon gets its much weaker in comparison to weapons that are genuinely op but some of the weapons in these comments cannot understand that, i have done probably more than 20 play throughs of this game all with different weapons and this one was by far the most underwhelming given the reputation it has

AnonymousBerried delight deep within, custard side there's no coming home

Anonymous
AnonymousGhostflame torch stance break build consistently out damages this weapon on ng+7, each with a respective dedicated build. Kinda mid tbh

Anonymouslove how people complain about this weapon like
"you didn't beat the game if you used this"
bruh ive beaten the game like 10x now, and even though moonveil is good, there is SO MANY more overpowered weapons and combos compared to this, lol
AnonymousThis weapon used to be busted good. Maybe still is. But honestly some of the easiest runs I've had in the game have still been str-based so it's funny when players of that style look down on every other player type in the game when unga bunga is one of the easiest playstyles out there with massive dmg and easy stance breaks.
Just play the game how you enjoy it. There's no wrong way to play.
AnonymousI went to test the damage between the Moonveil +2 and a Keen Uchigatana +3 with Scholar's Armament. Moonveil's skill did 242-356 while the Uchigatana's skill did 331-424 with Scholar's Armament while it does 281-353 without the buff on Godrick Soldiers. Upgraded the Uchi to +4 and the damage went up to 301-379 unbuff and 352-449 with the buff. So how is Moonveil "OP" when my Uchi with a magic weapon buff is doing more damage in early game?

Anonymous
AnonymousStart prisoner if you want to wield this thing as early as possible, get it to +6 and bam early game is ez af (can even get it to +9 if you kill noble in volcano manor)

Anonymous
Anonymousmuch better moonlight sword than that DS3 slop scimitar used by a bloodborne ripoff character.

Anonymous
AnonymousFirst playthrough beat with Bloodhound's Fang and Blasphesmous Blade, my 2nd run I decided to give a try to STR/INT build and discovered this beautiful katana. It looks cool, it's fast and string, very fun weapon to use.

Anonymous
AnonymousBHF comments: this weapon is THAT good! carried me my first time
Here: i found this cool ass looking katana but somehow i feel like i shouldnt use it.
(btw all blades are fucking rusty or stained beside carian knight ss whyyyyyyyyy they so ugly)
Anonymous
AnonymousAs the great Sun Tzu said, "If God had wanted you to live, he would not have created me!"

Love how people just spam Transient Moonlight like it's an instant win button. When weebs learn how to time their L2 press, they'll finally know how OP this really is.

AnonymousThis weapon is for newbs who think they are better than ppl who use blasphemous blade.
In reality both have no brainpower to play the game
Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousI used Rogier’s rapier and then Claws for until lvl 105, is it enough suffering to gain right to switch to moonveil further?

AnonymousHow does this weapon still somehow trivialize the game when it got nerfed a while ago and has been meh in early levels?

Anonymousthank god vergil's not my favorite son of sparda or else i'd have shamelessly whored myself out to this years ago

Anonymous
Anonymous
Anonymousit is called moon vale because they named it after the "moon vale." where that is? probably in the next expansion...

AnonymousJust going to give you a fair warning, reader. You should know what you're getting into by reading the comments on a weapon that half the community loves and half the community hates.

AnonymousYou use this weapon because it's good. I use it because I wanna feel like Vergil.
We are not the same.
Anonymousthere is nothing wrong with using an overpowered weapon to crush the game with no effort i paid 70 DOLLARS for the game i can do what i want!!!!

AnonymousIf you used this you didn't beat the game. It's just facts.

AnonymousMe when I realized this is a chase down machine with enormous damage attached to my skill stick

Anonymous
Anonymousremember to wear a hazmat suit before entering the comments, gl

AnonymousNothing pisses me off more than how this and rivers of blood had their reputation nuked because of the BRAINLETS who only know L2. Katanas have cool movesets in this game, however due to SOME PEOPLE only using the WA these weapons are hated by quite a lot of people. Even worse, IT'S BUILT FOR SPELLBLADE, but a good portion of the people who use it in their build don't bother switching between spells/melee, and end up just using it for an extra ranged attack.

AnonymousOne question, why does this and star lined sword have hemorrage build up and not Frost build up? They are related to Moon and stars

AnonymousAll things considered it’s not bad. I think it’s a pretty dope option for intelligence players

Anonymous
AnonymousI hate this thing. I'm a faith/dex build that uses mainly greatswords and incants (and perfume!), and this thing takes out more than half of my tiny health bar in one hit. We're not even going to mention Transient Moonlight. I laugh at people using a Malenia build in pvp, but this thing makes me paranoid. Or maybe it's because i'm about to kill Malikeith at about level 110~...

AnonymousThe classic overtuned katana
More overtuned and OP weapons certainly exist, but this will always be reliably so.
Anonymoushow come people gets crap for using this stupid katana thats apparently "OP" in pve but people using Wing of Astel gets a pass? I dam well know Wing of Astel "melts" bosses like like the Elden Beast.

Anonymous
AnonymousWhat are the odds that there's like one or two people actually upset by this weapon and their endless anon spam on this wiki just makes it seem like somehow the playerbase is split, when in reality it's just, like, a guy (being a hardcore gamer)

Anonymousif they gave this to moongrum 80% of yall wouldn't have beat this game

Anonymous
Anonymousive played this game 3 times its my GOD given right to use this now

Anonymous
AnonymousEveryone be so for real... Moonveil trivializes the game. But there are a lot of weapons that are busted. Blasphemous Bade, Ruins Greatsword, Radahn's Greatsword, Rivers of Blood, etc. If you used any of these, then you didn't beat the game.

Anonymous
AnonymousSo what you’re telling me is, I need to use the club to go whack the rolling sheep in Limgrave until I’m level 150, then I can beat the game. Thanks for the advice Cartman.

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousIs the weapon really that strong that it trivialize the game so much in pve that “you didn’t beat the game”?

AnonymousDo the waves behave like night sorceries, in the way that enemies can’t see it?

AnonymousHow are these people real?! Imagine playing a game you payed for in a way that you enjoy! Cant be having that, it's not supposed to be "fun" it should be difficult. Even though difficult is just STR builds apparently... Use a busted build but not this one because... its too easy? Anyone time to spam colossal sword because I "Actually beat the game1!11!!!!".
Its a game designed to be fun, it can be fun even if that comes from it being "easy"
AnonymousEvery time I see someone using this in co-op or PvP, I just automatically know they're bad at the game and only know how to press L2.

AnonymousEverybody in the comments is just a nobody fighting over nothing

Anonymousanyone who uses this weapon should be sent to a flufftrock farm...

AnonymousJesus sausage grilling christ can’t y’all just play the game and let others enjoy it the way they want to? No one cares about what you think so stop being an annoying prick, y’all are worse than the dogs in Caelid

I hate to say it, but this weapon is honestly a bit bland. It's essentially an Int-scaling Uchigatana with a slightly better Unsheathe, but that's all it has going for it. No unique moveset like Serpentbone Blade, no long reach like Nagakiba, and uninfusable. It's neat, I guess, but it's a pretty generic katana as far as things go. If you want reliable damage and don't care about the moveset, this is a fine weapon. If you want something more unique, try Star-Lined Sword instead.

Anonymoustell me how to beat the game NOW because if using a good weapon means you didnt beat the game then what do i gotta do to beat it

It's lowkey not that great in pvp. The opponent can easily just strafe to the side or parry you in 1v1. In ganks it's just as good as spamming any other magic projectile.
