Marais Executioner's Sword is a Greatsword in Elden Ring. The Marais Executioner's Sword scales primarily with Strength and Arcane and is a good Weapon for melee users who want to output high damage. Infuse the sword with energy, then fling it forwards in a corkscrew attack. The sword continuously deals damage while violently spinning. Charge the attack to increase reach and duration of the spin.
Storied sword of House Marais, the family of executioners who presided over the Shaded Castle. One of the legendary armaments.
Elemer of the Briar, the Bell Bearing Hunter, snatched the sword from the site of his looming execution, and furnished it with battle skills from his home of Eochaid.
Where to Find Marais Executioner's Sword
The Marais Executioner's Sword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Dropped by Elemer of the Briar at The Shaded Castle. [Elden Ring Map here]
Elden Ring Marais Executioner's Sword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Eochaid's Dancing Blade
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Can't be enchanted with Magic nor boosted with Consumables.
- Marais Executioner's Sword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
- As of update 1.03 scaling with this weapon has been fixed
- This weapon has a unique slam R2.
- Sell Value:
1000 - Eochaid's Dancing Blade's damage is based on total Attack Rating, so using things that boost your AR will increase its damage significantly.
- Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, Millicent's Prosthesis, and the Thorny Cracked Tear all boost the damage of this Skill since each strike of the corkscrew is considered an attack.
- Regalia of Eochaid shares the same skill with less range.
- Eochaid's Dancing Blade does predominantly Physical Damage, with some Magic Damage, but not a lot.
- Although this weapon's skill does considerable damage, it is often risky to use it against larger enemies such as bosses, due to their resistance to stuns and knockdowns. Against lighter enemies and NPC-type enemies, the skill can effectively stunlock them, dealing the full damage and knocking them down with the final hit of the spin (not the swing performed after the spin). Some larger enemies such as Banished Knights will not be stunned by the skill, but if hit by the final hit of the spin will still be knocked down, so using the skill early before they enter melee range can help to achieve this.
- One of the 9 Legendary Armaments.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Greatswords weapons has increased.

Anonymousthink I've perfected a fit for this weapon.

AnonymousTrivializes every boss(that stays still without attacking for 6 seconds)

AnonymousShouldn't this have higher crit multiplier? It's an executioner's sword...

AnonymousDamn this sword! Ever since doing a playthrough with this beast any other build just doesn't do it anymore for me. It's like having the best cake you've ever had and then be expected to try and enjoy stale muffins. This sword ruined me!

AnonymousAlong with what the person below me said, the dancer set from the DLC applies to the weapon art, and you might as well pick up the bloodsucking tear. At scadutree level 14 a fully charged L2 was doing well over 20k damage

AnonymousShard of Alexander + Millicent's Prosthesis + RWSI + Godfrey Icon + Thorny Cracked Tear = boss blender

Anonymous
Anonymoussomething about this weapon itches the unknown parts of my poor brain

AnonymousSeems to be a lot of connections between Dancing/Dancers in this game. Tanith was a Dancer, The skills of Eochaid are all Dancing related, Malenia has some connection to Shaded Castle / House Marias with the prosthesis location and she studied under the Blue Dancer / uses Waterfowl Dance. The Blue Dancer seems to represent flowing water, almost the opposite of stagnant / rotten water? The people of Eochaid were described as "ascetics", was the blind swordsman from there?

Anonymous
AnonymousThey should have nerfed the skill and made heavy attacks do the ranged swipe elemer/bell bearing hunter can do

AnonymousI'm gonna pair this with the ancient meteoric ore greatsword from the dlc for a new-and-improved zweihander and claymore build. The AMOG has the poke heavy the zweihander has too, so it's perfect.

I have done some testing with this. Stats: 55 str, 15 dex (20 with millicents prothesis), 40 arcane, Marais Executior's Sword +10.
Tested this on Muriel in Church of Vows.
The next results are with a full charged L2 attack.
Without any buffs: 2752
Winged Sword Insignia: 3253
Millicents prothesis: 4196 (damage varies a lot)
Shard of Alexander: 3164
Godrey Icon: 3164
Spicked Cracked Tear + Thorny Cracked Tear: 3380
All buffs combined: 8840
The test results with Godfrey's Icon and Shard of Alexander seem to be right, since it's +15% damage. However, the damage buff with Winged Sword Insignia, Thorny Cracked Tear and Millicent's Prothesis seem kind of random, since the test results with these are not consistent. They do give a buff, but the damage output never seems to be the same. I also figured swaddling cloth does not work with Marai's Excecutioner's Sword. Use golden vow and Flame grant me strength to increase further damage output.
AnonymousNot only disappointing that the special skill is the drill instead of the dancing slashes, but this is like the worst weapon to use a drill move with. IT HAS NO POINTY END.

AnonymousSo, the Hellish Corkscrew of Death on this thing activates the multi-attack talismans properly ... but the Ghiza wheel L2 won't (neither the bleed one, but that's beside the point here)... I see how it is Miyazaki ... you really hate Bloodborne that much huh?

AnonymousI think this has actually had it's damage type be miscategorised by the devs because it doesn't seem to be buffed by the Spear Talisman or take advantage of the 30% on counterattacks native to thrusting weapons. Either that, or counterattacks are done by weapon type and greatsword usually are slash so this gets no counterattack buff. The weapon skill seems to be the same.

AnonymousKind of wish this weapon had some slight bleed due to the barbed stuff, I know it'd make it a bit too good but still.

Anonymous
AnonymousNot sure but does the R2 do head shot damage either charged or uncharged? I tested it but I'm not exactly sure. More information would be great, thank you.

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousI know this weapon is mostly known for it's L2, but don't underestimate the unique heavy attacks on this thing. The first one comes out the same if not faster than the R1!

AnonymousThis is one of my favourite weapon in terms of looks. I loved the executioner sword in ds3, and this is just an edgier version

AnonymousHas anyone tested if the dancer set boosts this? Since the skill has „dancing“ in its name

Anonymouslove weapons that have no notable differences outside of their l2s and maybe their r2 if they're lucky, hope they go back to the drawing board and make legendary weapons feel "legendary" and not "subpar on a good day" (among other things)

Anonymous
AnonymousI hate this sword. Flying swords are lazy. Ash of war is not flashy

Anonymousnevermind my previous comment, it felt like that after playing with a greatweapon; after getting the shard of alexander, rotten sword insignia and godfrey's icon this aow SLAPS

AnonymousTHE worst bait weapon of all, it's insane how ass this weapon and it's 1 millimeter aow is

AnonymousI feel like the whole situation with Elemer was underutilized. I think it would have made sense for Elemer to drop a champion remembrance like Astel even though he's not a demigod where you could choose between his sword or his shield. The sword should have had a stance skill with the wide, ranged sweeps followed by yanking the sword back toward yourself being the light attack and the drill move being the heavy attack. His shield's skill should have been that ground pound red explosion that Elemer does instead of the basic bash skill.

AnonymousWhy do I need 24 strength for a sword that I lift with my mind?

Anonymousthis is lowkey/highkey a really/kinda good/bad weapon ngl/gl

AnonymousLove this sword to bits but man I really don't like that when you hit stuff the particle effect from magic damage is still blue. I wish it was like the gargoyles black blade, where the holy damage is black and red instead of only yellow

Anonymous
Ok this weapon is just an F spamfest in PVE, but is it any good in PVP?

AnonymousYeah but why tf this thing does even deal magic damage, when it doesn't have literally anything to do with int builds?
Unless the arcane scaling still actually impacts the magic damage, as much weird as it sounds.
I would want more greatswords to have this slam R2, but most of them already have that caveman light attack chain

AnonymousI know this weapon is great, but the sheer disappointment I felt when I discovered you can't throw your sword out and swing it around like Elemer was tragic

AnonymousAn unexpected upside of this weapon is that you can rather reliably use its dancing blade skill to kill enemies that are hiding around corners, even some tougher ones like knights if you have the correct talismans. I recommend charging the skill when doing so as it makes the blade go a bit further.
Truly the Elden Ring Power Drill experience
AnonymousSeeing the immense damage grow as every buff gets triggered will never not be satisfying !

AnonymousI was hoping the weapon skill was gonna "throw" the sword and swing it 10 feet away, like the bell hunter does

Anonymous
AnonymousI wish it would do strike damage instead. Standard okay but pierce?

AnonymousWelp, finished a playthrough with this thing. Truly a monster of a weapon. I think i'm in love.
When built around the skill - its pretty much a game cleaner. Enemies that take x3 R1 attacks to die often only take 1 skill use, and not even a charged one - notably Farum Azula beasts (not extra chonky ones). At softlocked stats it dealt ~1600 damage per drill, ~1700 with Alexander's Shard. A guaranteed kill either way.
No need for backstabs, parries, or any other of that tryhard nonsense... Approach, press Special Attack, watch them get shredded, receive serotonin straight into your noggin'. Easy to follow up with normals to finish the job too.
The bosses were a hit and a miss.
Notably: made Malenia's 1st phase a breeze. Just use the uncharged variant after dodging one of her more exposed attacks and it pretty much lands as is - she's staggered for the whole thing and even eats the final slash too. Unfortunately the Dance becomes useless in 2nd phase because she gains an uncanny ability to just un-stun-lock herself out of it and usually responds with one of her own attacks, all of which hurt a lot and some are guaranteed to kill you.
Mohg: only opportunity is uncharged variant while he's doing the cursing, everything else will get you punished.
Maliketh: a minor opportunity in phase 1 when he does a round-house slash, but forget about it in phase 2 unless you go for parries.
Godfrey: absolutely not, although i did finished him off with one, but it was a massive gamble for style points.
Radagon provides you with a couple of opportunities to land uncharged variant.
Elden Beast has a couple of windows to land a fully charged one - easily rips out ~10% of his HP bar.
My only wish is that the skill should've provided a choice between 2 moves instead of one, notably i would love to have the windmill attack. I'm in love with Eochaid's fighting style, but the game basically has nothing to show for it - only 2 weapons that use the exact same skill. But hey - at least it works.
AnonymousIn order to spread the word: i shall copypaste some testing with a +10 one at Renalla.
For the most part - STR does the most job, especially if you intend on two-handing it: every even number provides up to +5 damage increase, eventually slowing down to alternating between 3/4 and a stable +2 for every uneven number.
It appears the STR scaling hits a hardlock at exactly 80 STR and basically only gains +1 damage per level after that. So reaching 54 STR (54+27=81) is optimal for maximizing two-handed physical damage.
ARC scaling is actually pretty decent as well providing alternating +2/3 damage per level. It hits a major softlock after 50 at which point it starts alternating between +1/2 damage and then final hardlock at 80 where it starts alternating 1/0.
You know what's most fascinating? ARC scaling appears to provide both physical and magic damage simultaneously.
Equipping Albianuric mask (+4 ARC) reveals that it increases phys damage by +5 and magical damage by +4. Weird.
At +10 // 54 STR // 50 ARC // Two-Handed > it achieves exactly 770 AR (approx 555+215 phys+mag).
AnonymousI think i'm kinda in love with this one. The moveset could be a little bit less boring (i was surprised to find that both R2s are overhead "head-cutters" and not wide swings i'm used to - causes issues with crowd-control), but i really love the visuals and the weapon art rocks everything it touches.
The 23 ARC requirement though... Requirement is a requirement, but the thing is - so far i couldn't find anything that could compliment the sword without effectively investing into a different style of character.
So, lets get through it in order (Vanilla game):
+ Weapons: effectively none with sole exception being Mohgwyn's Spear which is basically the same weapon requirements and scaling wise. Kinda funny actually.
+ Spells: The Bubbles. That's it. The strongest one requires 25 INT.
+ Incantations 1: You can become a Dragon Communion fan. Might want 25 FTH just to be able to cast most of those. And probably not even do it well.
+ Incantations 2: You can become a Blood Incantations fan. All 3 of them: Bloodboon, Bloodflame Talons and Swarm of Flies. Bloodflame Blade is disqualified because you can't put it on your sword (probably for the better - could be OP with that AoW). Again - at minimum reqs they probably won't work too well, but its better than having 23 ARC just to be a greatsword enjoyer.
+ You will end up using Dragon Comunion Seal either way, since its the only one that scales with ARC.
+ Throwables and consumables: Kukri (why?), Poison Pots, Sleep Pots and... Poison Mist Perfume. Not too much flare, but it works.
Or you just... Ignore all of that and just slam the big iron into people's heads. And when it doesn't work - you show them what wine bottle' caps feel like.
AnonymousDo I need to put more than 23 into arcane or is it better just going into strength?

Anonymous
AnonymousThis weapon is really a letdown IMO, especially for a Legendary.
First, why is it like 40% shorter/smaller than the version of the sword that Elemer uses? It's not like they needed to shrink it, when THE Greatsword is as big as it is. This sword whiffs attacks that it shouldn't because of the artificially reduced lack of reach.
Second, I think the moveset is rather lame and one-dimensional. Almost every attack is an overhead vertical smash. There's not really an R2 combo to speak of... it just repeats the same move.
The lone attack I think it actually good is the running R2. It comes out decently fast and has a satisfying amount of heft to it.
The Arcane requirement is annoyingly high considering how bad the scaling is (caps at C scaling when fully upgraded).
My last gripe is the lack of variety with the Ash of War. When you get to see first hand how cool a telekenitcally-wielded weapon is as it carves you up, but then the AoW is pretty much the worst of the bosses' moveset, it's a real letdown. Not that the move is terrible on its own merit. It's more the fact that you don't get access to the other slashing attacks. They could have set it up like the Death's Poker, where the L2 initiates the special attack, and then you have options to follow-up/chain using R1/R2 or repeatedly hitting L2 to determine which move you use.
TL:DR - I want to like this weapon so much more, if they made it the proper size, had some better attribute scaling, gave more versatility to the moveset and AoW. I know it's really unlikely they'll make any further improvements at this point, aside from any generic greatsword changes.
AnonymousStill fµck this 23 WASTED Arcane omg. I don't know how much Sake must they've drank when they made those weapons

With latest updates I can finally call this Arcane Melee Comet Azur. With the right proportions it is an ultimate Boss-shredder 2024. True Gigachad weapon.
Recipe to wipe out the Lands Between with SOTE:
1. Marais Gigachad Sword +10
2. Ranah Dancers Set (not obligatory)
3. Godfrey Icon + Milicent Prosthesis + Rotten Winged Insignia + Shard of Alexander
4. Wondrous Physique - Bloodsucking Cracked Tear + Thorny Cracked Tear
5. Buffs - Golden Vow + Shabriri Howl
Stats for damage: STR 80 / Dex 15 / ARC 50
AnonymousArcane scaling and wasted AoW as previous rightly complained destroyed this weapon into void. Design still 10/10.

Anonymous
Anonymousreally wish more greatswords had that heavy slam. more unique than the boring wide slash.

AnonymousLove that this synergies with the prosthesis, it lets the Hero class able to wield the weapon without levelling dex

AnonymousStr/Arc has three weapons now and this is one of them. It's a shame it just seems to not be very good, with weirdly low AR for a split damage weapon and surprisingly high stat requirements. I dont really understand what they were going for with this weapon, which is a real shame because it looks super cool.

Anonymous
Anonymous
Anonymousimagine if instead of getting waterfowl on malenias blade we got like the thrust she does this is what this weapon is

AnonymousThe way damage increases stack for this particular weapon is nuts.
According to the information on this wiki, these items impact the skill of this weapon:
- Millicent's Prosthesis: "For each tier, attack power increases by 4%, 6%, and then 11%"
- Winged Sword Insignia: "For each tier, attack power increases by 3%, 5%, and then 10%" (Note: Rotten Winged Sword Insignia is slightly better, but you can't get it and Millicent's Prosthesis in the same NG cycle, so I was using this for testing.)
- Shard of Alexander: "greatly boosts the attack power of Skills by 15%"
- Godfrey Icon: "raises attack power of charged Spells and Skills by 15%"
- Thorny Cracked Tear: "Increases damage by 9%, 13%, and 20%"
- Spiked Cracked Tear: "Charged attacks +15%"
So if I use the charged skill with all of these buffs and they stack multiplicatively (as is commonly thought), it should increase the damage by 122%, which is pretty crazy.
But when I tested it on the frost troll by giant's gravepost site of grace (multiple times and carefully replicating the same conditions for each case) the charged skill with no talismans and no wondrous physick did 2658 damage and with all these buffs it did a whopping 8463 damage (two-handed at 54 str / 19 dex / 50 arc). This is about a 218% increase.
So I guess this means that effects like Millicent's Prosthesis with their "tiers" of damage buff stack multiplicatively INTERNALLY. So you don't get damage * 1.11 when it's on tier 3 of the buff, but rather damage * 1.04 * 1.06 * 1.11. Calculating the expected percent increase with this in mind yields 227% instead of 122%. This number is much closer to the observed 218% percent increase, with the difference easily explained by this type of effect including a "ramp-up time" where the first few hits only benefit from the lower tiers of damage increase.
I thought this was neat, and hopefully it helps someone thinking about this type of build.
Thanks

Anonymousit lost the opportunity to be the coolest weapon in the game
but I still love it
Ngl this is the most wasted weapon. Dude is doing crazy force lightsaber combos but we get a tiny drill attack with long charge up and stays in place. I would fight two bell hunters at once to get a version that does the other stuff instead

AnonymousCompletely changed my build after obtaining this high fantasy power drill. I regret nothing!

"Regalia of Eochaid has the same Skill, but that Weapon does less damage since it has lower Attack Rating." Yeah that happens when you compare a straight sword and a greatsword

AnonymousThing is so bad that my favorite part is the heavy attack string

Anonymousit melts as good as is doesnt forgive unprecice timings of the Eochaid's Dancing Blade. If used right 2-4 times and any boss is down. The only thing thats sometimes trickey is to land the last swing hit. Also i love this combo with all this talismans. As 2nd weapon Rivers of blood since it uses close the same loadout its pretty single target god. Just when its about exploring hordes of enemies its rly weak compared to fire or holy aoe talent greatswords :D

AnonymousWith the dlc adding in the fast firing crossbow, I'm fully committed to a Gael the slave knight build. With it be good? Sources say no, but will it be fun? Hell yeah

AnonymousAbsolutely melts humanoid enemies in the DLC, like the ones in the mausoleums, because most will walk directly into the weapon art.

AnonymousAOW GOES BRRRRR 12000 WITH RIGHT BUILD, apart from that It sucks but with Godfrey icon rot Winged Insignia and millicent's prostisis and Alexandre FKING GOES BRRRRR

Landing every hit on its skill is one of the most satisfying things to pull off. It's still very odd that this thing has Arcane scaling if it really has nothing to do with Status Effects.

AnonymousI´m kind of confused with this... requires arc and scales with it but provides magic damage ???

Anonymouswhat do these numbers in brackets in the stat scaling section mean? i mean Str C (63), Dex E (7) etc

AnonymousIt's a cool weapon but I personally don't like how heavily it relies on it's skill. The base AR is actually surpisingly low for a greatsword. For comparison at 50 str and minimum arc Marais gets around 700 AR with split physical/magical damage. On the same build, heavy infused Iron Greatsword reaches identical AR without split damage, despite not scaling with arcane at all

Anonymoussucks this doesn't give you fp back per kill like it used to

AnonymousSince you have arcane you can use mosquito swarm to proc bleed to get those sweet +20% to AR from lord's of blood so Ideal setup is rotten winged sword + Arm of the sweetest girl in the game + Shard of a corpse eating jar + Blood thing + white mask, and tears obviously trying to buff magic damage is nearly useless tho

AnonymousThis is the most beautiful weapon in the game for me. Str/arc gang wya !!!!!

AnonymousThe go-to for one shot builds, really. At least ones that don't require two giant crushers. Godfrey Icon, Alex Shard, Milicent's Prothsesis, and Rotten Sword Talisman, plus thorny and magic damage tear and Rogier's set, consistently hits for about 9k damage on the giant hand at the foot of the forge.

AnonymousI did some testing using Marais Executioner Sword (54 Str + 14 Dex + 30 Arc = 723 dmg):
My target was Banished Knight at Dragon Altar grace (Farum Azula).
1) No talismans used - fully charged AoW did 1926 dmg, uncharged did 1286 dmg.
2) Godfrey Icon only - fully charged AoW did 2222 dmg, uncharged did 1286 dmg.
3) Shard of Alexander only - fully charged AoW did 2222 dmg, uncharged did 1481 dmg.
4) Rotten Winged Insignia only - full charged Aow did 2549 dmg, uncharged did 1666 dmg.
5) Millicent's Prosthetis only - fully charged AoW did 2432 dmg, uncharged did 1590 dmg.
Thus, we can conclude following: Strongest talisman to pair with this is Rotten Winged Insignia (+32% dmg output), then Millicent's Prosthetis (+26%), then last place is shared with Godfrey Icon and Shard of Alexander (both +15%, but Shard keeps bonus even on uncharged AoW, unlike Godfrey's).
Now, let's see how they stack (all fully charged AoW):
1) Millicent's Prosthetis + Rotten Winged Insignia = 3261 dmg (maybe more, Knight just dies in oneshot lol), so about +69% dmg.
2) Godfrey Icon + Shard of Alexander = 2544 dmg, +32% dmg.
3) Godfrey Icon + Rotten Winged Insignia = 2934 dmg, +52% dmg.
4) Shard of Alexander + Rotten Winged Insignia = 2934 dmg, +52% dmg.
Overall, it's worth combining Rotten Winged Insignia and Millicent's Prosthethis, as that combo gives you most damage out of this drill AoW, and then you can slap either Godfrey Icon or Shard of Alexander (although latter is more preferable) to boost it further. I still need to find a non-boss respawning enemy who can survive this combo to give you exact numbers lol
AnonymousIdk why you're making Revengence references. This is clearly referencing Sol Badguy from the hit fighting game Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Anonymousthe D scaling in arcane is actually better than it looks. on the level up screen im getting a lot of AR when pumping arcane because im pretty sure it increases the magic and physical damage rather than just the physical damage. strength on the other hand just increases the physical damage. so its pretty close to its strength scaling, and you definitely want to level arcane once you get a decent amount of strength.

AnonymousJust saying, I would be using this weapon far more than any other if it's Unique Skill was a stance where using regular attacks swung the sword from ranged at whatever enemy you're locked onto and the heavy attack was the famous drill attack.

AnonymousThis is the most broken weapon in the game, and it is very underappreciated, can't wait to get millicent's prosthesis in new game +1 to stack even more buffs on this!

AnonymousThis and Mohwyn's spear are pretty much the only somber str/arc weapons. Considering that the game loosely hints at Marais and Elemer being related to the DLC setting, and arcane stuff potentially playing important role in it, I hope str/arc builds will get some love

Anonymous> is a executioner sword
> used to cut off heads
> has no pointy tip
> riposte is a stab
AnonymousIncorrect way to use this weapon: Complain about it not having a special boosted execution crit. Correct way to use this weapon: Use the special execution-chop R2s to poise break, and then jam the drill WA down their throat to execute. Looks extra badass with Elemer's set.
