Jellyfish Shield is a unique Greatshield in Elden Ring. The Jellyfish Shield is a Shield that scales with Strength. Greatshields weigh a lot but provide the best protection in the game. Greatshields provide a greater value of blocking and protecting oneself from enemy and boss attacks, but greatly increases the weight and reduces the player's mobility. This type of shield works best at reducing damage or guarding instead of parrying.

The head of a spirit jellyfish, commonly found floating above sacred ground throughout the Lands Between, wielded without modification as a shield.

The see-through head is extremely light, but its flesh is supple, providing absolutely no protection from piercing attacks.

Where to Find the Jellyfish Shield in Elden Ring

The Jellyfish Shield can be found at the following location:

Elden Ring Jellyfish Shield Notes & Tips

  • Shield Skill: Contagious Fury
    • boosts all damage by 12.5% for 30 seconds as long as the shield is not put away.
  • This shield cannot be infused with Ashes of War.
  • Can be buffed by defensive Magic or Consumables
  • Jellyfish Shield can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
  • Sell Value: item value icon elden ring wiki guide 18px 200
  • It is the lightest Greatshield in the game, tied with the Wooden Greatshield.
  • Despite its description stating it provides "Absolutely no protection from piercing attacks", it does offer a 100% physical block rate against piercing/thrusting attacks.
  • You can surprisingly stack the buff with a jellyfish shield in each hand if you two-hand the left one, use Contagious Fury, then switch to holding both shields and use the ash of war again, this time using the right-hand shield. Of course, you can't use any weapons while holding two jellyfish shields but it does boost the damage of consumables if you want to be cheeky and kill a boss with throwing knives.

  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
    • Bug: Can two-hand any weapon and keep the Contagious Fury buff active. Can also switch out the shield for anything else in the left-hand and retain the buff.)
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09.1, the above bug has been fixed.

Its meant to pair with the dark moon greatsword. its the only ash of war you still have access to while wearing this thing.

I like this thing because it serves a niche with the Ghiza wheel’s one-handed heavy attacks since they have the multi hit properties while the two-handed heavy doesn’t. The buff from the shield allows you to do the one-handed heavy while basically dealing the same damage as a two-handed heavy without the drawbacks of losing the multi hit effect

Currently useful for minmaxing consumable builds (pots, etc) and caster builds for pve. Not much else.

Want to one shot deathbirds w/holy pots? This shield will help you on your way :)

57 guard boost?? Brass shield has 73 at max. The skill is useless since you need too much strength to wield as a caster, at least buff it or make it so you can apply barricade shield...my favorite looking shield bruh F you mikazaki

I remember when ifirst picked up the game I saw a post of someone with this shilt and started searching for it everywhere by playing blind. When i finally found it I sticked it onto my back and two handet my wepon. I was so happy with the blue jellyfish on my back even withot the buff , looks awesome. Hievy claymore , full cleanrot set , then went back to die every 2 minutes ... how i miss that <3

I remember on release when newbies were fucking up their BHF's moveset and hyperarmor for a 12% damage boost. Good times.

This shield used to be so good before the nerf to it's ability. It's a shame what happened to it because the drip is immaculate.

I used Golden Vow, Dragon Communion Seal, Jelly Fish shield, roar medalion and I destroyed the draconic tree sentinel with only 3 cast of rotten breath at lvl 50 (and let him rot for a bit for safety)

If you are quick it's nice to run to get max damage. Have poison hand in left poison purfume in right get buff from kindred. Switch to seppuku weapon for lord of blood buff then switch poisoned hand for jelly fish for that buff. Worked really well to give my seppuku blood lance a nice extra kick. I only use in boss fights but the damage is great for my strength arcane build.

It appears to me that an offhand dagger with Sacred Order is far superior in most cases. It doesn't take away your weapon skills, lasts 60 seconds, weights 6.5 less, and doesn't require any stat investments. And helps against undead too. However, you can't block with it, and it's +10% damage instead of +12.5%.

If your melee then this gets outclasses by the two handed sword talisman in every way unless you think this is fashionable

Should I use it to guard counter? I wanna use a hammer with cragblade then one hand it then use contagious fury. Ok it has low guard boost tho.

The most you will EVER get out of Contagious Fury is after you've buffed your Dark Moon Greatsword and one-hand R2 R2 R2 R2.
                              Or use the one-handed Ghiza's Wheel R2.

People who recommend this for a meta level caster build recommend pouring 10+ levels into strength and lose any other offhand options for a buff you need 4 seconds (swap two hand buff one hand) prep time for to apply. Using this as a pure caster/INT build is not recommended, the levels are better spent on END, MND or VIG. Running any build with sub 60 VIG is a PvP and DLC PvE deathtrap.

I've never used this shield until I played though the dlc was amazing on my blood sword lance with sappuko white mask and the lord of blood exultation. I was able to beat radahn second time (pre nerf)

When I two hand my right hand weapon, I notice that the shield stops glowing red. Does this mean the buff is lost, and I have to be constantly holding it to have the buff?

                                    • The wiki comment about buffing using two of these shields to double up for a throwing pot / consumable build should read as follows. The buff order is backwards on the wiki currently.

"You can surprisingly stack the buff with a jellyfish shield in each hand if you two-hand the RIGHT one, use Contagious Fury, then switch to holding both shields and use the ash of war again, this time using the LEFT-HAND shield."

Anyone else having issues with it missing from your inventory and/or not being able to pick it up in other playthroughs? On my 100% playthrough on NG+3. it wasnt by the belfries in ng2 and im positive i picked in up on my first playthrough

When you see the white apparition of another player with this shield, the shield remains slightly blue which I think is interesting

                                          • The ''no protection from piercing attacks'' thing refers to it having a pretty low guard boost for a greatshield (52 compared to the Wooden Greatshield's 56 for the same weight)

                                            • Anonymous

Not only has the damage buff been reduced to 15% in the latest update, but I'm pretty sure they also made it accurate to it's description because I'm getting hit while guarding pretty regularly now so it must not block piercing dmg anymore.

                                              • Anonymous

That jelly is definitely making a comeback with the DLC's new throwable weapons. Or not. Might be worth keeping in mind if you decide to make a one-handed build.

Im used to getting trolled by fromsoft, but actually lying about how an item works in its description is insane

I wish the skill is toggle instead, turn it on make the jellyfish angy and get the buff but take damage over time use again to turn it off and calm the jelly down, similar to power within from dark souls

                                                    • Anonymous

Never used this till now, and I absolutely LOVE that it changes colour when the buff runs out! So convenient! My new favourite offhand for all builds that don't have any other damage-boosting offhand options :) just wish it would last 60 seconds, but at least I see when I have to reapply it.

                                                      • Anonymous

offhanding the jellyfish shield, mainhanding the turtleshell shield. no, not as any cosplay or challenge build but rather an indirect way to show my love of Leatherback Turtles and the role they play in their ecosystems

                                                        • Anonymous

Perhaps the in game text about piercing means it does not block Critical Attacks when worn on the back? Isn't that a feature of Great Shields?

                                                          • Anonymous

People complain that this shield is only for pure mages but I use it quite effectively as an actual shield while just poking stuff with a rapier from behind it. Yeah the guard boost leaves a lot to be desired but greatshield talisman combined with Erdtree Favor +2 or Viridian amber +2 helps mitigate the issue.

                                                            • Anonymous

You can still use the buff if you equip the shield in your main hand and two-hand the shield, use the buf then single hand again this allowing you to use your aow or whatever you want to spam.

                                                              • Anonymous

After some testing you can still have the jellyfish shield buff and use ashes of war of you put the shield in your right hand and the weapon/casting item in the left but you still can't 2-hand your weapon and keep the buff so be aware of that when making your choice.

                                                                • Anonymous

Useless since the nerf since the buff disappears the moment you put the shield on your back, which means you can´t use the weapon art of your melee weapon since it is blocked by the buff of the shield so the only use is now for pure mages but how often do yo usee a pure mage carrying a big ass shield which needs points into strength..

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

I totally understood it going away when switching out the weapon, but I felt on the back was ok like a lot of other buffs. And your back was red! Was super fun on a colossal sword build! Bright side FGMS and GW work for spells/incantations again.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

Surprisingly, left and right hand buffs are _still_ counted separately, so you can use just a single Jellyfish Shield to double buff yourself by switching hands after buffing.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Always wrote this off as a joke item until I tried it on a caster. All I can say is praise the Jelly Lord! This shield is great. Low weight and investment, amazing damage boost to ALL damage so long as you keep the shield out and it only costs 9 FP. You can even buff the shield itself with Shield Grease or Scholars Shield without any buff canceling. Also it glows BRIGHT when you stack buffs on it lol.

Final note to reiterate how silly this thing is - you can stack this shield's Ash of War on top of Golden Vow/Rallying Cry, Flame Grant me Strength and Shrouding Crystal Tears. Makes my Healer do 80 Faith Damage and then some while only having 42 Faith. Throw on Fire damage boosting Talismans and an Oil Pot and watch your Giantsflame Take Thee nuke things for 4k.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

It's kinda insane how much you can do with this shield: buff your pulley crossbow's power with it, make shieldpoking even stronger, or just outright 2h it to stagger bosses with sheer strength by virtue of it being a greatshield -- and that's just scratching the surface.

Oh and did l mention this has the lowest weight and stat requirements for a 100% physical defense greatshield? It's low-key nutty.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

You can use the ornamental sword special r2 with this shield’s skill active, since the swords stay buffed and keep the r2 when switched to onehanded.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

So this description says it, "provides absolutely no protection from piercing attacks". Maybe this is in reference to certain ashes of war, like Impaling Thrust and Piercing Fang. Those AoW state that they will deal damage through guarding opponents, maybe this shield takes more damage in that scenario. Just a hunch.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

this thing is a pretty big noob magnet, idk why. I regulary see fat rolling hosts with 0 clue what they're doing carrying this thing.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Being able to use my ash from my weapon while using this, and having to 2h it to use the buff really would be more preferable. As it is, its basically a caster shield that requires too much str to be usable by most casters

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I used this shield with my melee build… by carrying my jellybro on my back while I two handed all my weapons and took all the damage myself. Didn’t want to hurt my friend you see.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I don't think it mentions this here but if you have one of these in each hand and you use the ash of war of one of them, it'll turn both of them red. I'm fairly certain it's just cosmetic, apparently you can stack the buffs but just using one will turn both red. It's pretty cool cause that's how the jellies work.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I've never understood what upgrading a shield actually does. I'm at roundtable hold and when I compare the current stats to their values after the upgrade it seems like the increase from one upgrade level to the next only improves the shield's attack power not it's guard boost.
What I'm having some trouble with is a brass shield+16 and has the 'barricade shield" AoW shows a guard boost of 64 instead of the 56 all the other brass shields have. But that doesn't change the fact they show no increase in guard boost in the 'strengthen armament' menu. Can anyone explain this please?
