The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Elden Ring Commander Niall Boss Guide
Commander Niall Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Commander Niall
- Niall will primarily focus on buffing his allies while they are still alive and will perform relatively simple attacks that are easily avoided.
- Focus on the dual greatsword Knight with at the beginning, as it is more aggressive than the shield Knight.
- Charming one of the Knights with Bewitching Branches can make the first phase quite simple.
- Use a tanky Spirit to distract the Banished Knights.
- Take advantage of when Niall tires himself out after his Charged Whirlwind dash move
- You can jump to avoid his shockwave foot stomp.
- Kill at least one Knight before summoning your spirit.
- Killing the last of his knights while he is in his buffing animation will lock him in his first phase until about half health
- Using kukris/throwing knives or ranged attacks triggers him to do his kick attack, if done correctly he can be put into a "positive feedback loop" in which he will jump attack you forever as long as you dodge into throwing a knife at him
- Backstabbing one Knight at the start of the fight, preferably buffed by the Dagger Talisman, is an effective way of dealing with the Knights quickly.
- A rare glitch may occur if the user is struck right before entering the arena, causing the boss to freeze.
General Fight Strategy
Commander Niall is accompanied by two Spectral Banished Knights, one equipped with dual greatswords and the other equipped with a sword and shield. Success in this battle hinges on your ability to manage the two very dangerous knights. Niall himself doesn't get too dangerous until the knights are defeated. He will lumber around the arena, making no real effort to close the distance so focus on the knights at the beginning. Of the two, the dual sword knight is the most aggressive and dangerous. It is highly recommended that you summon a tanky spirit to more easily manage both knights at once. They are also susceptible to Magic Damage so Sorcery mains should have a slight advantage damage-wise.
The easiest way to be rid of the Banished Knights is to, immediately, after traversing the fog, run into the right-hand corner of the arena and await the charge of the dual-wielding Knight, and using a Bewitching Branch on him, turning him into an ally (it might take a few tries to get the timing right, the animation is rather long). This will cause the sword-n-board Banished Knight to immediately aggro him, while your new ally attacks Niall himself, ripping away a huge chunk of his health. Bewitch the second Banished Knight, while avoiding Niall's windstorm attacks, back away and summon your spirit ashes and apply any buff you need. Niall should have taken out both knights by this point (he kills them extremely quickly), or they will have brought him below 50% health, at which point they will despawn, as Niall enters his second phase.
Once the knights are killed, Niall begins actively pursuing you and using his more dangerous moves. Niall commands the powers of Ice via a whirlwind he summons around him, as well as Lightning via infusions on his prosthetic leg. Niall's most dangerous moves always involve him summoning whirlwinds of frost around him. He can then follow up with a stomp of his peg leg, infusing it with lightning and then leaping towards you to perform a powerful leg smash that creates a lightning shockwave on impact. He can also follow-up with two versions of a dash attack. The first is a single whirl of his halberd followed by a quick dash into an uppercut with his halberd. The second version sees Niall charging up for a few seconds as he sucks in frosty winds towards him, he then whirls his halberd several times, creating an expanding whirlwind of frost. Finally, he dashes to the side and then runs toward you, culminating in an uppercut with his halberd. This move tires Niall out and he will be kneeling and vulnerable for several seconds. This is the biggest damage window throughout his fight so be sure to dodge the uppercut and get as many hits in as possible as he recovers.
Melee Users
Start with heavy R2 On right summon dual wielding knight, the attack should land at or just before he materializes. Then a second heavy R2, and he should stagger. If lucky, you can get a crit in which should kill him at appropriate level for this boss and you will be invulnerable. Roll away and or heal. Next bait out the 2nd summon and do a running R2, back up, rinse and repeat. If he teleports to you, roll behind him. Be selective. Running R2 should bait him into an attack and an auto stagger when he is walking with his shield up. You have plenty of time on the 2nd summon as the boss will be passive during this phase.
Next the Commander Niall will charge up frost and electric attacks after his summons have died. Roll at the last second for his attacks. When he charges his leg and flip kicks, roll to his right (your left) to get an opening for an attack. He does a delayed heavy swing after one consecutive attack he has where you should roll twice in a row to dodge it every time, and then punish him accordingly with a few swings. When he does a frost wind and then a charged electric attack, dodge roll into a single r1, watch for a quick poke and then a heavy telegraphed swing, again rolling to your left. Now the charged electric stomp AOE, difficult to manage and hard to avoid. With the swinging frost winds, he has multiple attacks that look similar to this. The one you're looking for is a melee attack ending that you can punish. The other frost AOE should be avoided. So just manage close range and then outside his AOE blasts. Managing your distance and opportunities is key. You should stay up close to him and back away when you see a frost swing coming. Upon one of his charged frost and electric attacks he will kneel and pause for a huge opportunity to hit him with heavy R2s, you should be able to stun him and deal a crit. Definitely dealing with the summons without getting hit was a big advantage to have as much flasks as possible to fight him, because his electric AOE stomp is near impossible to avoid when up close. After frost winds, be ready to charge in.
Magic and Ranged Users
For magic and ranged users, you would want to equip a heavy-hitting spell/incantation for this fight. As stated above, defeat the two knights first before engaging Commander Niall. For a bow and arrow user, try equipping arrows or bolts that has status effects on them like bleed or rot.
If you have the Comet Azur spell, cast a Terra Magica at the edge of the Mist gate (make sure the knight outside the arena is already killed), consume a Flask of Wondrous Physick with a Cerulean Hidden Tear to nullify FP consumption. Once you enter the boss arena, immediately lock on to Commander Niall then charge and release your Comet Azure. It is also recommended to add a Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear besides the Cerulean Hidden Tear for increased magic damage. This setup will most likely one-shot Commander Niall, even on higher NG+ playthroughs.
Commander Niall Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Description | Counter |
| Call Spirits - Banished Knights | At the beginning of the fight, he will wave his standard and summon two Banished Knights. While they are alive, he will continuously buff them until they die or he reaches half health. | Focus the dual-wielding knight, as it is the most aggressive. Use a Bewitching Branch on one if you have the materials. |
| Halberd Combo | A standard 3-hit combo beginning with a stab, a low sweep and ending with a slow overhead smash. | Get some distance away from him or dodge each attack. The final hit is charged exceedingly slow so beware of timing or simply run away. |
| Storm Kick (Airborne) | Niall stomps his prosthetic leg on the ground, creating a frost whirlwind around him and infusing the leg with lightning. He then leaps up towards you and after a short delay, crashes down, releasing a lightning shockwave a small radius from the point of impact. | Maintain distance during the whirlwind to prevent getting frosted. Once he leaps, wait for him to drop before dodging. |
| Storm Kick (Grounded) | Niall raises his prosthetic leg up high in front of him, infusing it with lightning and then stomps down in front of him, releasing a lightning shockwave from the point of impact. | Time your dodge very well, especially if he raises his leg up high as the shockwave released has a massive radius. You can alternatively jump to avoid damage. |
| Whirlwind Dash | Niall twirls his halberd once, creating a whirlwind of frost around him. He then dashes straight towards you and performs an uppercut with the halberd. | The dash itself does no damage but serves to throw you off your dodge timing. Dodge the uppercut instead. |
| Whirlwind Dash (Charged) | Niall turns his back towards you and charges up, sucking in frosty winds towards him. He then twirls his halberd several times, releasing an expanding whirlwind of frost. Niall dashes to the side and then runs towards you, culminating in an uppercut with his halberd. Note that sometimes, he only performs the charging portion of this move, without the whirlwind release nor the dash. The frosty winds can still inflict Frostbite on you so maintain distance. | Maintain distance as he is charging and releasing the whirlwinds. Beware their expanding radius that covers most of the arena. When he dashes towards you, wait til the uppercut before dodging. Successfully dodging this attack tires Niall out, rendering him vulnerable for a very long time. This is your biggest damage window for him. |
Commander Niall Notes & Other Trivia
- His armor set can be purchased from Finger Reader Enia after killing him: the Veteran's Set
- The name "Niall" is a first name of Scottish-Gaelic or Irish-Gaelic origin with unclear meaning. Presumed meanings are "cloud", "chivalrous" or "victorious". All of these meanings make sense for the character being a military commander wielding weather-themed power.
- Though their relationship is unconfirmed, Commander O'Neil, uses the same model as him, same voice actor, same armor and Commander's Standard and the same first phase moveset, down to summoning disgraced warriors (Exile Soldiers in O'Neil's case), with the lone exception that O'Neil whips up Scarlet Rot winds versus Niall's blizzards.
- "O'Neil" means "Son of Neil", with "Neil" being a variation of the name "Niall".
- Both have an implied connection to the twin demigods Miquella and Malenia; O'Neil carries the Unalloyed Gold Needle made by Miquella and the Commander's Standard references his former master being Malenia, while Niall protects the Haligtree Secret Medallion (left). The Veteran's Armor cape also features a red cloth similar to that of Malenia's Armor, down to Miquella's unalloyed gold wreath being embroidered onto it.
- Niall's presence at Castle Sol also implies a connection to Godwyn the Golden and the eclipse worshipped there that will allegedly resurrect his soul. Niall wielding lightning powers and the dragon-themed decorations on the Veteran's Set may imply he was a Dragon Cult Knight in service to Godwyn before the latter's death.

Anonymousi dont play with summons anymore but there are 3 exceptions and this is one of them

AnonymousIf you're struggling with this boss and you're someone who avoids parrying because you assume it's difficult, unreliable, or you just don't like it, I implore you to just give it a try. It's extremely easy to learn to parry him, if you're using a good parry like Carian Retaliation. In particular, the jab he does after his huge jumping lightning stomp, and the sweep he does after he charges at you are incredibly telegraphed and consistent. Then, the only real difficulty comes from the two knights at the start. Burst at least one of them down while they spawn in by any means necessary—stack as many buffs as you need, build your physick around it, sell your soul if necessary—then parry him into next week.

AnonymousThanks everyone for the tips here.
I was having a rough time but a few hints here and beat him first try.
Runback: Activate the lift.
This was huge. Without the lift activated I was running though agroing everything phasing through the yellow wall and buffing/summimg while the commander summoned.
Then 1/2 the time my mimic would start attacking the stuff I summoned on the other side of the yellow veil.
Using the lift you can run up to the entry without agro. Take your time buffing then enter and not worry about your summons attacking the agro.
Second good tip was attack/kill the sword summons while spawning. I did this before summing my mimic as it was an easy kill (if done at the start) and I did not want the mimic agroing the commander,
Just those two tips and with the mimic the fight was easy peasy. Before that I was dying left and right... enough to be not-fun.
Thanks!
AnonymousWhy does mimic tear GO FOR THE GUY BEOND THE FOG. oohhh a pian

AnonymousThe arena was a bit fucked but he could've been pretty cool. Tho I just went to my emergency perfume fucker summon and the dude was so confused, targeting me and randomly switching agro mid attack. So it was an easy kill but I might've been a bit over leveld

About 30-40 failures. Lvl 147, Redmane Ogha 10, magma blade 9, no parry (cause i still suck at it) - this defo felt like DS2 and so far the hardest boss in ER.

AnonymousNiall is significantly easier without a summon and you don't need to git good or even figure out his moveset or cheese him. First playthrough took me like 15 tries with a Mimic, Blasphemous blade (yes, I'm pretty bad), and a stack of bewitching branches and the 2nd playthrough dropped him on the first try without having to heal (and I didn't get much better). Basically just ran around the arena kiting the summons and hitting the dual sword knight with ice spear (or any ranged AOW or Spell) until dead. After that, I left the shield knight alone kiting him around while focused on Niall as he was ambling around and buffing, making sure to stay back when his AOE was up. He's absurdly slow in phase 1 and doesn't really attack. Once phase 2 hits, the knight summon disappears and you can just stay at range and wait for his jump attack which is extremely easy to dodge and punish, even if you don't avoid the the lightning.
With a summon out he's significantly harder to predict as he switches aggro constantly and messing with the bewitching branch, I'd never get the timing right and get shredded by the dual wielding knight.
AnonymousI genuinely like this boss, though I think the two summons feel more like busywork instead of a fun addition to the fight. Niall is so passive that they're only bad if you can't quickly get rid of one of them. Niall himself is awesome and his moves are all honest, although his catches are really punishing and it's easy to go from dominating the fight at full health to being dead when you take one bad opening.
He's far from the best boss, though. I do think his ice nuke AoE is a bit too large for the arena, he has too much health compared to other late game bosses, he should be susceptible to madness (even if it wouldn't stun him), and he really shouldn't have lightning negation considering that he's in full plate armor.
AnonymousAfter getting my ass beat multiple times, I decided to screw the Geneva convention and just use biological warfare - Antspur rapier with poison grease, summoned the Mimic Tear, and poked him when he was distracted under dead AND EVEN THEN it was harrowing

AnonymousThat is not a area of a effect that is a country of effect damn

AnonymousFive hundred nigh undodgeable point-blank stomps.
Jokes aside,
Still a cool boss imo.
Anonymousjust throw a moon, drink physick and shoot comet azur. His minions runs to your beam and dies and he doesn't even dodge

AnonymousIn many boss pages we can see how "good", the majority of ER players are. Lots of shitplayers giving cheese recomendations, and clowns liking it and supporting them. No wonder in Nightreign we have a bunch of useless pricks playing, because now they cannot do things like cheesing the bell bearing hunter from a higher ground with arrows, they also can't do the cringe parry cheese agains the Draconic Tree Sentinel outside Leyndell, and the list goes on. Also, just do a search on the internet and the first things you will see about 95% of the bosses have a title "HOW TO CHEESE THIS BOSS". F*cking idiots.

AnonymousThis is like that insufferable mutual that you only ever tolerate being around because the likable one brings them along. I always loathe this boss fight every every single time I play this game through

AnonymousReally unfair & bullshit roll catch that you can't commit to memory because this boss is so unfathomably uninteresting that he only uses under 30% hp, ugh.

AnonymousBoss can 2 shot: This fight is awful & unbalanced. Boss can 3 shot: GOTY BEST GAME OAT WOW

AnonymousOh you went out of your way to get a 20% damage reduction for lightning? Haha Niall doesn't care, you're still getting one shot

Anonymous"he's not even that hard" On average most people are around level 80-100 upon reaching this area, and you saying the boss is easy at level 150 is not impressive or relatable at all. Yes, exploring is fun and all but why on earth has the entirety of game progression been seamless in terms of difficulty up to this point, and now all of a sudden they place a boss that can two-shot me with his entire moveset? His arena is too small for his corny charge-up frost attack & his even cornier lightning stomp has almost as many active frames as the dodge roll.

Anonymous
AnonymousThe Crystalian spirit ashes laugh at Niall and his minions. No strike damage to be found among them. Appears to be almost completely immune to lightning and frost.

AnonymousSometimes this game make me feel like it never was tested in proper way, someone in test block of fromsoft (if it exists) said that this castle with this enemy pack, with this enemy pack, with this boss runback and, especially, this boss was okay and ready for playing. Definitely worst piece of content in this game, only feel given by this experience is a frustration

AnonymousHe looks a normal human, so... Why is he immune to Madness?

AnonymousJust parry him and RKR with Misericorde, he's not that hard. You can even parry his big dashes!

Magic users hate this boss because Niall doesn't let them sit there and fire off blue juice all day

AnonymousA tarnished summoned five greatshield zombie to bully a legendary warrior and no one bats an eye, i called two of my trusted warriors for one last battle even though i doesnt even need their help and everyone loses their mind

AnonymousI stacked Lightning Fortification, the Lightning talisman, lightning liver, and speckled tear to make phase 2 a bit easier.

AnonymousI don't understand the hate for this guy. I mean sure he has lots of hp, hits hard is reasonably aggressive but he is a late game boss is it is to be expected. Two summons aren't really a problem, the boss is very passive while they are alive so just kill them first. Parrying makes the fight kind of trivial but fighting without it full melee is reasonable as well. Don't give up practice makes perfect

AnonymousWorst boss as a console player (in my opinion): He needs to be beat in order to reach Melania, Mohg and the DLC, he spawns 2(in my opinion) annoying enemies, you could make him easier with bewitched branches, but you can only get an infinite amount after beating him (without paying for online on console). I ended up cheesing him with ~200 arrows and then doing the last bit of the fight with mimic tear. I hate it and hope it will stay the only Elden ring boss i'll have to cheese.

Anonymous"Commander Niall, veteran of Castle Sol, offered this prosthesis in exchange for the lives of defeated
knights held prisoner."
Then how come he still has it and fights with it and drops it upon defeat?
AnonymousThe Comet Azur hint needs some mote background: What else is needed to buff dmg as far as possible? Which level is needed for a one-shot? At lvl 120 with Int 80, pure glass cannon for maxed dmg, I barely manage to get him down halfway. Since by then his summons reach me, but phase 2 does not start, I'm dead. Still need to figure out how to pull this off. (Vigor is not the answer, least of all for everyone with higher vigor and less int ... they're dead even faster.

AnonymousThis really isn't so bad with a non-azur sorcerer. The first phase can be shortened by dropping cannon of haima on them all as he summons and then you can just kite them a bit and pick off the summons. At range in phase 2 he tends to just use the normal whirlwind dash and jumping lightning kick which isn't much to learn, so just hit him with your staple attack like rock sling or icecrag or something between his attacks. I'm sure you can do similar stuff with faith too, like black flame, you really don't need to respec. You really should level vigor though, it makes a lot of difference not getting 1 hit by the stomp.

AnonymousI killed him twice the same way, I summon the clone, kill the knights by melee, the clone dies and I kill the boss at his 60-70% HP with fireballs and few stabs after he attacks me with his prothesis. That mother****ing frost little storm he keeps doing when you keep close to him is boring, it forces me to mantain distance and use ranged attacks. I'd like to kick his but* with melee mainly but that freezing winds are unfair, you hit him and get 30-60% HP melted.

AnonymousNgl this fight isn't that bad. I used malikeths blade+9 at level 120 and first tried him. Js use a summon(I used lhutel) and he's easy. Take out his minions, let him focus your summon, and weapon art and run away

AnonymousFirst try: spamming the frost lunge attack over and over and the prosthesis stomp with the massive invisible aoe. Second try: barely any lunges, 2 stomps, cake walk. Two completely different bosses.

AnonymousThis bossfight is ass on many levels, its a reuse of a guy we fought in caelid, i get it, making bosses especially unique ones is expensive as ****, but why this lame freak?? and why make him guard the medallion needed to access a whole ass another area? why have the stupid runback with instant transmission mobs that dont let you buff up properly? i didnt mind him the first time but after playing the game 2-3 times?? **** off man just step aside and let me play the game

AnonymousDid they patch this fight or something? I'm having none of the problems mentioned in the other comments: the runback is just running through enemies who can't touch you as long as you sprint, the summons are pretty squishy and the boss doesn't aggro till you killed them, and, aside from a couple telegraphed attacks which are a nigh one-shot, his moveset didn't seen unfair at all.
Actually thought it was kind of a fun fight!
Anonymous
AnonymousHonestly the whole spirit ganking thing was not needed. The guy is a genuine threat as it is - those lighting slams he does deal crazy damage if they get a square hit on you. He made me rage a couple of times, but as always - once you memorize the moveset and time the dodges better he becomes just fine, you can literally sneak an attack in between every attack of his, that's how slow he is.

AnonymousAs a strength user I was lucky to beat the first knight the second it spawned and played it safe with the other one. On the second phase, I stayed patient and timed my rolls well and kept my distance when he did his AOE attacks.
I don’t think it would have gone this well for me if I had played anything other than a strength build LOL

AnonymousAnother of Elden Ring's many forgettable filler bosses. Not hard, not interesting, not fun- unless you troll him with bewitching branch.

AnonymousBullshit fight, add difficulty with bullshit gimmicks and ganks instead of making an actually challenging/original moveset for the boss. All that bullshit just to 1st try Fire Giant and the other supposedly "Great Bosses". Ridiculous. Wish they cut back on the stupid field bosses and made the real bosses feel a bit less like punching balls

AnonymousThis fight is just not that hard. Here’s what you do:
1) Enter Fog wall and run to where the dual wield night spawns. Spawn kill him. Any decent AoW will two shot him.
2) Back away and bait the shield knight into his storm lunge move. Dodge through it and back stab him. Charge heavy him as he’s standing up. Voila, no more banished knights.
3). Be willing to back away when Niall does the AOEs. Make him come to you with his lightning moves, then just punish or parry or whatever works for you. Then back away and repeat.
Parrying those summon dudes while he's clowning around with coward ass aoe-s and yelling stupid commands? No thanks. Your prescription is comet azur. Only comet azur :D

Anonymousit's pretty easy to bait his two charge attacks and punish them if you maintain distance while fighting one on one. also, stormcaller wrecks both summons. only found this out on ng+7. once the animation gets going, they can't do anything to you without getting hit and all the aow's attacks make them flinch

you can quite literally parry him back to back if you stay close to him

AnonymousI think they patched him because it seems like he’s way more aggressive now when the two knights are alive. He used to hang back and not engage until they were dead.
