This release shows the same classic game that players know and love, with a few balance tweaks to the gameplay, such as some talents being fixed, combat tunes, and, of course, modern graphics. Players on the latest systems will now be able to enjoy the game with better graphics and improved gameplay. This includes quality-of-life improvements, such as small UI and UX enhancements and optimization. There will also be new content added to this edition of the game, such as new dialogue options, expanded dialogue, and an optional starting area, which are only a few things that players can come to expect. We have yet to discover what additional changes have been made to the game since its original 2018 release as the definitive edition. Still, the game appears to be the familiar one that we all know, where we can assemble our parties, fight against the void, and forge relationships with other characters throughout this adventure.

Divinity New Game Announced

Divinity, Larian Studios' newest installment to the franchise, was announced on December 12, 2025, at The Game Awards. They showed a cinematic trailer of a village celebrating a Wickerman festival, as well as a diverse community of villagers partaking in its celebration. We see 3 wickermen on display, ready to be lit on fire, but the one in the middle has an old man suspended inside of it. A robed man approaches the wickerman under the light of the eclipse and lights it on fire, and as it burns, so does the old man, and as the old man burns, something evil emerges from his remains and turns the wickerman into a Hellstone.

In the game's press kit, it is mentioned that this will be Larian Studio's most ambitious title yet, as they plan to add all they've learned in past projects into this one, saying that they plan to give its players an RPG with greater breadth and depth than ever before. As mentioned in the press kit, the setting will still be in the land of Rivellon. They say that the game will welcome newcomers and beginners to the genre, saying that they won't be required to have experienced previous titles in the series to enjoy, but veterans will be able to enjoy a greater understanding, as well as continuity of the story. Swen Vincke, founder and game director of the studio, says, "Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled Divinity." which confirms the game title. Then he follows it up by saying, "We're ready to bring everything we've done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we've created before. We've been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we've always wanted to make, and you're going to have loads of fun with it." Sounds like a lot to look forward to. Due to what limited content shown, we were all left to speculate as to what new stuff this game will bring upon its release.

DOS 2 Game Story Overview

Divinity Original Sin 2 is a critically acclaimed role-playing game set in the intricate and magical world of Rivellon, where ancient forces, deities, and powerful magic shape the fate of the realm. The game’s narrative is centered around Source magic, a potent and enigmatic energy drawn from the Void. While once revered, Source has become highly controversial due to its dangerous nature and connections to dark forces.

Players assume the role of a Sourcerer, a practitioner of Source magic, who is hunted by the Divine Order—an authoritarian group determined to rid the world of Source users, whom they deem criminals and threats to Rivellon’s stability.

What to Expect in Divinity Original Sin 2

Diverse Bosses in DOS 2

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, players will face a wide range of powerful and often frustrating enemies, from demonic creatures with overwhelming abilities to monsters capable of resurrecting themselves. Bosses bring unique challenges, with enemies typically possessing distinct abilities tied to different schools of magic or combat techniques. For instance, certain bosses may lean heavily on Source magic, unleashing devastating spells that can decimate an unprepared party, while others might prioritize brute force, using high physical armor and raw strength to overpower players.

This diversity in enemy design keeps players on their toes, requiring them to constantly adapt their tactics. Success often depends on recognizing the weaknesses of a particular boss—whether that means switching between physical and magical damage types, countering high armor with status effects, or exploiting elemental vulnerabilities. The variety in combat styles ensures that no two encounters feel the same, making strategy and flexibility essential for overcoming these challenging foes.

Character Creation in Divinity Original Sin 2

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, players have the option to choose from several pre-scripted characters or create their own custom character. The game offers five different races—Human, Elf, Dwarf, Lizard, and Undead—each with its own unique traits and abilities. Additionally, there are 14 different classes to choose from, allowing players to tailor their character's skills and combat style. If you prefer to personalize your character further, you can click the "Customize" button to alter their appearance, including details like hair, skin tone, and facial features.

1 visual aid divinity original sin 2 wiki guide min

It's worth noting that even if you don't choose one of the pre-scripted characters as your main, they may still join your party later in the game. Each of these pre-scripted characters has their own backstory, personality, and unique questlines, adding depth to your party interactions. This flexibility ensures a dynamic and customizable experience while exploring Rivellon. You can also check out the Character Creation page to know more.

Exciting Multiplayer Modes in DOS 2

Multiplayer mode is an exciting way to enjoy the game with friends offline, or with other gamers online. Players are given the freedom to create a unique multiplayer progress experience that is exclusive only on the session that they hop into. For Online Multiplayer, each participant who joins a multiplayer lobby will need to create a new character, and they cannot use their existing character's progress on the local save file. Lobby players can talk and plan about their own character builds before starting the multiplayer campaign, and create their custom group of characters that will benefit from each other's capabilities. Offline Multiplayer allows two individuals to share the same screen and play in a local game, couch-coop setup with a split screen and use of two controllers.

World Exploration in Divinity Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 features a vast map layout that requires thorough exploration. Traversing through challenging terrain, fighting against enemies along the way, and analyzing the environment for any potentially hidden clues that can help you with your quest completion can be difficult. Finding hidden features and key items requires close attention to your surroundings and the right skills to uncover them. You will often need to use critical thinking to clear blocked paths and navigate tough terrain. To help you with your exploration, the Locations page provides map legends, area highlights, and useful tips.

Fun PVP Mechanics in DOS 2

PVP in Divinity Original Sin 2 has two known variations to engage in player-versus-player (PvP) combat. While exploring the world in your campaign mode, you can attack your own crew members. This merits an unsanctioned combat against other players known as Player Kill (PK) and triggers negative consequences that can hurt your character's progression. For a structured and penalty-free fight, you can instead send an invite to players to the PvP Arena. There is a max of four party members for each PVP party, and you can start a PvP session with fewer than four members; even fighting solo against a full party is possible, but very challenging. The Arena provides a constructed environment with terrain features you can use for combat strategy. Multiplayer teams can use this mode to refine their combat strategy together by fighting against a fully customized group of AI-controlled characters. You should check out the PVP Information page to know more about the DOS 2 PVP experience.

Item Crafting in Divinity Original Sin 2

Having an ample supply of frequently consumed consumables in your inventory is vital for your character's story progression. Crafting your own food, potions, and other useful items will help your party survive lengthy adventures and tough enemy and boss encounters. You can also craft better weapons and armor using collected crafting materials. Equipping better gear boosts your overall stats during the early and mid-game, and would be more often used until such time that you unlock unique and legendary gears from further quest completion in the game. Learning about the mechanics of Crafting is important, and players are encouraged to study the different useful recipes that they can craft and strategize on how to farm efficiently for the required materials. To know more about crafting recipes and material requirements, check out the Crafting page.

Combat & Gameplay Mechanics of Divinity Original Sin 2

Combat Overview in DOS 2

Combat in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is turn-based, reminiscent of classic RPGs, with a heavy emphasis on tactical decision-making. Each battle requires players to think strategically, using the environment, party composition, and abilities to their advantage. Players can utilize various surfaces like fire, water, and poison to create elemental reactions, adding another layer of complexity to the combat system. Party members and friendly NPCs also play a crucial role in assisting during combat, providing buffs, healing, or additional firepower.

Success in battles depends on planning and the careful management of action points, which are used to move, attack, and cast spells. A well-coordinated strategy, combined with a bit of luck, often leads to victory against the game's evil and challenging enemies. This system rewards careful positioning and foresight, encouraging players to think multiple steps ahead in each encounter.

What are Status Effects in Combat?

Status effects in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are conditions applied to characters during combat that can either hinder or harm them. Common status effects include Burning, Frozen, Bleeding, and Stunned. To apply these effects, you must first deplete the target's Physical Armor (for physical effects) or Magical Armor (for magical effects). Once the respective armor is broken, specific abilities, spells, or environmental surfaces can be used to inflict these effects, allowing you to control or weaken enemies

Healing During Combat

Healing in Divinity: Original Sin 2 can be achieved through various means, such as using healing spells, potions, or abilities like Restoration. Items like food or healing scrolls also provide ways to regain Vitality (health). However, players must be cautious of status effects like Decaying, which reverses the effect of healing spells and abilities, causing them to deal damage instead of restoring health.

Death during Combat

If a character dies in combat in Divinity: Original Sin 2, they can be revived using a Resurrection Scroll or skills like Rallying Cry or First Aid. However, when resurrected, characters return with only a small portion of their health. It's crucial to heal or protect them quickly after revival to prevent them from being defeated again.

Action Point System

Every character has a limited number of Action Points (AP) per turn, which they must manage wisely. These points are used for performing various actions, such as moving, attacking, or casting spells. Effective AP management is key to achieving success in combat.

Different actions require varying amounts of AP, with more powerful abilities or moving long distances consuming more points. This means that players must balance aggressive moves with defensive positioning, as overextending can leave characters exposed if most of their AP is spent in a single turn. However, any unused AP can be carried over to the next turn, providing the opportunity to execute more powerful moves

How to Regain Action Points?

At the start of each turn in Divinity: Original Sin 2, characters automatically regain a set number of Action Points (AP), which is typically determined by their attributes and skills. Certain buffs, talents—like Glass Cannon—or abilities can increase AP regeneration, giving characters more flexibility in combat. Additionally, any unused AP from the previous turn will carry over, allowing players to save up for more powerful actions or abilities in subsequent turns

Retreating from Combat

Yes, in Divinity: Original Sin 2, you can flee from combat if the situation becomes overwhelming. Each character has the option to flee individually, teleporting to the nearest waypoint. However, it's important to note that fleeing might leave the rest of your party behind, making them vulnerable to enemy attacks.

Summons in Combat

Summons are creatures you can conjure to assist in battle, with their strength depending on your Summoning skill level. Summons serve multiple purposes, such as tanking damage, applying status effects, and controlling the battlefield. By placing them strategically, you can draw enemy fire, block pathways, or provide support from different positions. For instance, Totems attack from a distance, offering ranged support, while more powerful summons like Incarnates can engage directly in melee combat.

DOS 2 Classic Edition and Definitive Edition Comparison

Divinity Original Sin 2: Classic Edition

definitive edition homepage image 1 dos 2 wiki guide
Divinity Original Sin 2: Definitive Edition

The Definitive Edition of Divinity Original Sin 2 is what we can say the most polished version of the game. When Larian Studios prepared to bring the game to consoles in 2018, they used it as an opportunity to fix major issues and addressing the feedback of gamers who played the first version of the game, completely rewrite thousands of lines of dialogue, and did a total overhaul to make the gameplay experience more balanced. If you haven't purchased the game yet, buying it now will give you both the Classic and Definitive Edition. It is recommended for you to begin with your journey with the Definitive Edition to experience a more improved storyline and improved gameplay.

Here are some of the notable improvements that is seen on the DOS 2 Definitive Edition:

  Classic Edition Definitive Edition
Story and Dialogue Some storyline narration and dialogue interactions when doing quests were a bit confusing. Over 150,000 words improved and 130,000 voiced words, giving a more polished experience when interacting with NPCs, narration, and lore.
Tutorial Menu Players who are new with the CRPG experience didn't have much reference for early gameplay. Added this new section in the game designed for coaching new players.
Combat Experience Tons of combat experience are showcased to players, especially when pursuing quest objectives. Eight new fights added, including the Harbour, Kraken, Kemm's Garden, and the Deathfog Zone.
Performance and Graphics Graphics performance was okay, HDR was not available. Smoother gameplay, redesigned maps to improve terrain traversal, and improved visual effects. HDR is also available on Console platforms.
Gameplay Rework Some skills were overpowered, and a few difficulty levels were imbalanced. Rebalanced skills and difficulty levels for a more realistic experience.
Audio Improvements There were some audio bugs reported by players, encountered mostly when quest lines are progressed, and dialogues are triggered. Enhanced soundtrack quality, including dynamic companion themes that evolve as the game progresses.
New Companion There are six trusty companions that were introduced in Classic Edition: Beast, Fane, Ifan Ben-Mezd, Lohse, The Red Prince, and Sebille. Added Sir Lora, a squirrel companion and the captain of a new world order cult.
UI Improvements Lore and Quests journal looked a bit too compact. Organizing the Character Inventory function needed improvement. Reorganized the journal by splitting lore and quests, and better management with organizing the Character Inventory.
Arena Mode Solo and Online Multiplayer for Arena mode wasn't available yet, and the pool of characters and maps was limited. Added solo play, online multiplayer, 16 New Characters, New Maps, and fun gameplay extras.
Console Experience No split-screen feature and online arena modes for console platforms. Added a split-screen and online arena modes to consoles, excluding the Game Master mode.

Hey, Hi um this is difficult for me to say so I'll get it off my chest, can you make a Dark Paladin build. I've been trying to make one myself but I've been struggling to incorporate the skills needed for the build. I know that Warfare is the prime school for the build but it's the 2ndary school that I have the issue with and I would really love it if there were a Dark Paladin build for this game.

                This is a new development.

Online co-op is platform dependant, right? However, playstation Now supposedly allows a cloud version of a game to be run remotely. This would likely be a PlayStation version of the game, wouldn't it? If so, would this be considered viable for online multiplayer with a PS4 as host (and the PSNow as guest)?

                • Ok, so I posted a comment earlier on the Powerful Awakening but now I feel I may not have been specific enough. In order to pickpocket the lint from your gods pocket you'll have to first enter sneak and use the cloak and dagger ability to jump first behind the mob on the right of your toon, then again toward the mist which coincidently will let you make a quick escape afterwords, but anyway I digress, your god should be right round there somewhere and you may at this time help yourself to whatever you may find laying about or in her pockets. I went ahead and made sure to ask the creators first and they clearly said that she wouldnt so trust me on this and have fun everyone.

Still flabbergasted by the amount of content in Act 2. Act 1 already felt like an entire game. I played the original where Act 3 felt rushed and a little shallow in content, but I heard that the Definitive Edition overhauled the entirety of Act 3, so another playthrough is happening right now.

The game even sold better than the massive hit playerunknown's battlegrounds for a while on steam, and there is definitely no turn-based combat in that game, so you are clearly wrong.

Clearly this guy has no life, no friends, no social network, otherwise he would realize how retarded he sounds making such a backward comment....
