Marian Rusko gefällt dasMarian Rusko gefällt dasBack from MWC Barcelona 2026. A few things stood out. The headline themes — AI, Physical AI, 6G, satellites — were impossible to miss. But the quieter signal mattered more to me: #LoRaWAN is no longer a technology that needs explaining. 25+ Alliance members on the floor, and not a single "but what is #LoRaWAN?" conversation. That's a milestone. Semtech also announced the 500Mu cumulative shipments milestone during the show. On the macro side, GSMA's announcement of 1 billion cellular IoT LPWAN units shipped sets context. The industry is scaling. The question now isn't about awareness — it's about where and how #LoRaWAN wins. A few things I took from partner conversations that shaped my thinking: → Smart Buildings in Europe remain the core gravity for #LoRaWAN sensor volumes — France, Germany, Italy leading. → China's LPWAN market is NB-IoT dominated by government mandate, not market preference — a structural constraint, not a competitive loss → Semtech's latest LR2021 ( #LoRa IC platform) is generating real pull from several makers who see LoRa+ other low-power technologies as the next convergence opportunities. The Physical AI narrative — sensors + connectivity + AI models acting on the physical world — is the industry framing that #LoRaWAN fits into naturally. Today’s featured paper in our #June #issue 📗 presents "A 360 GHz Wideband CMOS Autodyne FMCW Radar: Theory and Implementation." 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: A fully integrated wideband THz autodyne FMCW radar with a five-stage voltage-controlled ring oscillator and an on-chip folded slot antenna in a 55-nm BiCMOS process. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺: 360 GHz 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘆: ▪️To achieve a high bandwidth and a low in-band power variation simultaneously, a five-stage ring oscillator was chosen to generate a 5th harmonic at a lower fundamental frequency (fo) instead of a 3rd harmonic at a higher fo. Higher power gain at fo and higher harmonic power at the 5th harmonic is a result of the low MOS power gain at the higher fo for 3rd harmonic generation. The lower fundamental frequency tuning range required for 5th harmonic generation also results in lower in-band power variation. ▪️This radar has the highest bandwidth with the smallest chip area of known VCO-based CMOS radars in the frequency range. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: ▪️6.2 dBm peak equivalent-isotropically radiated power (EIRP) with 5.8 dB in-band power variation using a hyper-hemispherical silicon lens; ▪️57 GHz bandwidth; 152 mW dc power consumption and 0.16 mm2 chip area. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀: 🔹 Fraunhofer IPMS – CMOS-based microsystems and integration 🔹 Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI – wireless communications and mm-Wave research 🔹 National Chung Cheng University (CCU), Taiwan – excellence in microelectronics and communications Together, the partners develop Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) using ultra-low-power RF CMOS switch chips and embedded decoders, enabling scalable, high-performance solutions for 6G. ⚡The goal: a 15 GHz 32×32 RIS panel with 55 dB gain, 4° beam width, <1 W power, and microsecond switching – a step toward sustainable, reconfigurable 6G infrastructures. In-Line Amplifiers in DWDM Systems: In Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing networks, optical signals can travel only a limited distance before they weaken due to fiber attenuation and dispersion. That’s where In-Line Amplifiers (ILAs) come to the rescue! *What is an ILA? An In-Line Amplifier is an optical amplifier (usually an EDFA) placed along the fiber span between two DWDM nodes. Its purpose is to boost the weakened optical signal mid-span — without converting it to electrical form — allowing transmission over long-haul distances (hundreds or thousands of kilometers). *Why and When Do We Use ILAs? ✅ Why? • To compensate for fiber loss (~0.2 dB/km) • To maintain optical signal power levels within receiver sensitivity • To avoid electrical regeneration, which is costly and complex ✅ When? • Every 80–120 km typically (depending on fiber type, data rate, and power budget) • In long-haul and ultra-long-haul DWDM links • When OSNR (Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio) must be preserved. * Inside an ILA site: -The Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier EDFA boosts all DWDM channels simultaneously. -Variable Optical Attenuator VOA balances gain across channels. -Gain Flattening Filter GFF ensures flat gain profile across wavelengths.
