Exploration Mechanics in Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert - Factions

Players are the warrior Kliff, accompanied by his steadfast companions, Oongka, Yann, and Naira, who are part of the faction called the Greymanes. Kliff sees the faction as one big family. The Greymanes, who are led by Gian, are a group of warriors who oppose those who would abuse their power to subjugate and exploit the weak, determined to preserve peace and unity in the land. They are a group who fight for the protection of those who cannot protect themselves; they fight for the future of all Pywel.

The Greymanes were attacked by a group calling themselves the Black Bears, led by their fearsome leader named Myurdin. They carried out a successful ambush against the Greymanes that caused the group to shatter, leaving most of them dead and routed. All that was left of the surviving Greymanes, such as Oongka, Yann, and Naira, hid in hopes of regrouping one day to exact revenge on the Black Bears.

Lastly, The Abyss, which wasn't explicitly mentioned as a faction itself, is a mysterious realm that controls the forces of greed, malice, and power beyond anyone's imagination. It is described as "pure power, raw and untamed". The Abyss threatens the balance into utter chaos. Pieces of the Abyss can be found all over Pywel, quelling those who would take up the challenge.

There are still more factions to be discovered in the world of Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert - Regions

Pywel has 5 regions in total. Each with a unique vibe, along with different stories for players to discover. The first of these regions is named Pailune, which is the northernmost region of Pywel where the Greymanes hail from. Hernand is a region rich with mountains and rivers, and serves as the starting zone when starting the game.

Demeniss is the center of Pywel's political and military stage, set on top of a cliffside surrounded by high walls to defend from would-be adversaries. Delesyia is at the forefront of science and technology in Pywel, showing off the modernized industrial side of the region.

Lastly, the Crimson Desert, an arid expanse of red sands and lawlessness, its canyons hiding the most elusive of enemies. With the continent of Pywel being massive, traces of the Abyss that the players discover can be used to open up fast travel points throughout the map, allowing for easier traversing of the landscape.

Crimson Desert - The Protagonists

In Crimson Desert, we'll initially play as Kliff, but as we progress further into the story, we'll be able to play as 2 other characters on our journey through Pywel. Each of these charactershas their own combat style, unique skills, and weapons, allowing players to try out and experiment with different tactics.

Image showcasing the main characters in Crimson Desert, including playable and non-playable characters

Kliff stands as the all-rounder, while the two others are polar opposites of one another: Oongka, a large male equipped with heavy weapons and armor capable of taking and dealing more damage, and Damiane, a female in light armor with quick dodges and fast attacks.

Crimson Desert - Questing

Although the main quest line will follow Kliff and the Greymane's story, there will be tons of side missions for the players to discover, all of which can be done in any order that the player chooses. Players may take quests from friendly faction leaders.

These are known as faction quests, some of which even involve sieging castles or taking on strong enemies. Players may partake in the retaking of territories with the support of friendly factions. Retaking these territories will make the surrounding areas safe to travel. Not all missions will be pure action; some may be as simple as driving a wagon with a villager or even just basic chores.

Crimson Desert - Day & Night Cycle

The game features a day and night cycle. During the day, the sunlight and the weather can affect how places look indoors as the sunrays shine through the windows or peaking through mountains. While at night, though there's no change in enemy behavior, it will get very dark and may be difficult for players to travel without a light source.

Crimson Desert - Movement and Control

Other than the usual climbing of walls and mountains, players can perform triple jumps as well as glide from high up to faraway distances. They also have a sort of grappling mechanic that helps them grab and manipulate items as well as ledges from a distance, allowing for more freedom of exploration throughout Pywel and its vast land.

Crimson Desert - Interacting with the Environment

As this is an open-world game, you can find that you can interact with nature around you and use it to aid you in your travels or in combat. An example of this is using the frost element on your arrow to shoot into the water to create an ice platform, the ice platforms cannot be used as a method of crossing the water, as you can swim but it may be useful when trying to move specific items in the water or trapping enemies and such.

Another example is to pull on a tree and use it to fling you into an enemy base and giving you a chance to perform a drop attack to unsuspeciting enemies.

Combat Mechanics in Crimson Desert

From what was shown in the second features overview that they posted on their channel, players have a lot of freedom in how they wish to participate in combat. Normal but powerful weapon skills can be combined with bare-handed hits and kicks, as well as being able to grapple your enemies in seamless combos. There is also a wide variety of grapples that you can learn as you progress in the game.

A common staple of this genre, players can apply elemental buffs to their attacks to further strengthen them. Players can create combos however they want, depending on their playstyle.

Crimson Desert - Learning Skills

Players must acquire Abyss Artifacts scattered all over the world, as well as the Abyss, to improve core stats such as health and stamina. Collecting these artifacts is very important when it comes to unlocking new skills. Crimson Desert has a unique take on learning some skills in the game, as some of these cannot be unlocked with just the help of the Abyss Artifacts.

Crimson Desert - Upgrades

Similar to crafting their items, players must also collect materials to further improve their weapons and equipment. Materials can be gathered from all over the map by either hunting for game or mining for ore veins, allowing players to acquire precious stones. Enemies may also drop some materials that you need, which means farming enemies is always an option.

Crimson Desert - Equipment

As in many RPGs, players can either purchase, loot, or craft their gear. Crafting equipment and weapons, as well as upgrading them, will require you to hunt for the necessary materials before you can create whatever items you have in mind. Gear can be acquired from chests as rewards for completing puzzles such as those shown in their features overview videos.

Crimson Desert - Companion Expeditions

News of your camp will reach the lost Greymanes, and they'll rejoin the faction as you progress through the story, slowly building up your group's ranks. Players can send their comrades on expeditions, which can yield money and resources that they can put to use in upgrading their camp. They can also be sent over to hostile or blockaded locations while the player is exploring in a different part of the world. Doing so will reduce the number of threats that the players will face when they then decide to go through those areas.

Crimson Desert - Boss Fights

Boss fights in Crimson Desert can be intense. One of the bosses, called White Horn, who resembles a giant white-furred ape with antlers and a long, silky tail, is said to have taken some children from a nearby settlement, and the player is tasked with bringing those kids back. Its quick and aggressive attacks leave no room for error. It can hide itself in the blizzard before charging at the player. It's shown in the video that players are able to climb and grab hold on to these lumbering enemies and perform attacks similar to Monster Hunter Rise.

Another boss is the Queen Stoneback Crab. Its shell resembles ordinary rocks with random pots, ores, and treasures, baiting anyone greedy enough to try to take any. During the fight with this behemoth, the treasure on her back can be destroyed from her stone shell.

Players will have to find out what they need to hit to effectively take out these giant beasts if they want to reap any of their rewards. Another comparison between this last boss and the first one is that the Queen Stoneback Crab shows a different type of health bar on the top of the screen, showing that there are 3 phases to fighting it, unlike White Horn, which is a much more straightforward fight.

Crimson Desert - Stamina Management

A stamina wheel can be seen near the character while engaged in combat against enemies, climbing mountains, and gliding. Though not all attack skills will require stamina to perform, they allow players to perform specific attack combos or specific skills.

Crimson Desert - Changing Player POV

Players may change their POV from first person to third-person view. This gives players the chance to experience traversing through Pywel through the character's eyes to take in the beauty of the game and its scenery and to be able to inspect items closer.

Players may also use the first-person POV combat to fully immerse themselves. Otherwise, playing in third-person allows players to fully examine their surroundings and avoid getting ambushed in combat.

Crimson Desert - Life in Pywel

With their faction in disarray after the deadly ambush orchestrated by the Black Bears, the player and the surviving members of the Greymanes are forced into hiding in a small patch of land located in Hernand as they regroup and recover in camps.

These player camps can be expanded and upgraded with the use of resources collected throughout their adventures. Players can customize their personal space by purchasing pieces of furniture for their home and placing these wherever they see fit.

Crimson Desert - Fishing and Hunting

Fishing and Hunting are two skills players will need to master in the game, as they both help with gathering needed ingredients for your cooking recipes. Fishing can be learned by observing Fishermen that you can find at the Nas River Fishing Dock. After gaining this knowledge, you can use the Fishing Rod in the river to catch fresh fish. Hunting for game does the same, but may require a bit more finesse as the target can escape more easily.

Crimson Desert - Minigames

Players are able to participate in minigames to wind down a bit from the action they'll be in most of the time. From betting pennies, horse racing, target shooting, arm wrestling, to mud fights, there's a chance to win great prizes. These activities give the world a more lived-in feel, as well as giving a more in-depth look at how the citizens spend their free time.

Crimson Desert - Cooking and Farming

In the camp, players can help improve their chances in the field by cooking food that provides buffs to their HP, Spirit, and Stamina.

Players can start a farm and produce the needed ingredients for themselves if they choose. Livestock can be raised by building a ranch for the camp, and you can take care of a variety of farm animals.
