The health of people, animals and ecosystems is deeply connected. Protecting the environment and nature helps prevent disease, strengthens resilience and supports the well-being of people and animals. That's #OneHealth. From 5–7 April, the Quadripartite partners UNEP, FAO, World Health Organization, and World Organisation for Animal Health, come together at the #OneHealthSummit to strengthen action across these links. Migratory freshwater fish are in steep decline due to pressures along their paths, including dams, altered flows, habitat degradation, pollution and unsustainable fishing. Restoring rivers and habitats cannot wait. Read the #CMSFreshwaterFishes report and learn what it will take to turn the tide: https://lnkd.in/d5wVqgZy

A major step for global wildlife conservation! Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) have agreed on new or upgraded protections for 40 migratory species at the close of #CMSCOP15 in Brazil. Cheetahs, striped hyenas, snowy owls, giant otters, and great hammerhead sharks are among those now better protected. The Convention on Migratory Species is the only international convention dedicated to migratory animals and their habitats. Now 47 years old, it protects over 1,200 unique species globally. The move comes as new evidence shows many migratory populations are in deepening decline. Stronger international action has never been more urgent. More info: https://lnkd.in/dD4u5SQS

While mercury occurs naturally in the environment, it becomes dangerous at high levels. It travels through air & water, builds up in fish, and can harm human health and ecosystems. Here's everything you need to know about mercury and how risks can be reduced for people and planet: https://lnkd.in/e5dhmCu5

Methane (CH₄) is responsible for around 30% of global warming today. So where is it coming from, and what can we do about it? Sources range from oil and gas production, agriculture, and waste to climate change itself. We know the sources. And we already have the solutions. Cutting methane is one of the fastest, most effective ways to slow warming now. As #Methane250 gets underway, swipe to find out where action matters most. It’s #TimeForCH4nge International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO, Climate & Clean Air Coalition

The world has reached a major milestone for ocean conservation: 10% of the ocean is now within protected or conserved areas, a global landmark for nature at sea. These areas are vital for both people and wildlife. They help halt and reverse biodiversity loss while providing cultural, spiritual and economic benefits that communities around the world depend on. In December 2022, parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity committed to protecting 30% of Earth's land and seas by 2030. Getting there will require tripling the extent of protected areas, prioritizing effective management, strengthening governance, and improving how progress is measured and reported. 🚨 World reaches a major milestone for nature at sea! 🌊 The international community officially reached a global conservation landmark, with 10.01% of the ocean now within protected and conserved areas. This update to the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA) is a significant step forward toward Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF and a strong foundation to build on for the #HighSeasTreaty. But there is still work to do to reach the 2030 goals: 🔸 Triple the extent of protected and conserved areas at sea 🔸 Prioritize effective management of these areas 🔸 Ensure the areas are equitably governed 🔸 Bridge the gap in reporting data 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eD7QtRxD The Protected Planet Report 2027 will provide the next evaluation of global progress on all elements of Target 3. Protected Planet | IUCN | IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) | UN Environment Programme | UN Biodiversity Protected Planet is the authoritative source of data on protected and conserved areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). The WDPCA and Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME) are managed by UNEP-WCMC.
