The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle-physics detector attached to the outside of the International Space Station**** (ISS), searching for Dark Matter, #antimatter and missing matter. Here we see “Layer-0”, a new layer of silicon sensors which will be mounted on top of the AMS while it orbits Earth on the ISS. From 28 June to 27 July, Layer-0 was hung from a robotic arm  in CERN’s North Area undergoing final tests before spaceflight. Layer-0 measures the charge sign and momentum of charged particles and has been developed by the AMS collaboration #AtCERN as part of the upgrade of the AMS detector. The tracker is scheduled to fly to the Space Station in 2027 aboard a SpaceX Cargo Dragon, where it will be installed on top of AMS using the ISS’s robotic arm. A series of spacewalks (EVAs) will be required to complete its mechanical and electrical connection to AMS. Only a few milestones remain before Layer-0 can leave Earth. 77 tonnes on the move 🚚 On 22 July, the 77-tonne JFSU-C, a shielding component used in the ATLAS Collaboration, was transported from the ATLAS cavern to Building 191 – the technical workshop and integration facility used for assembling and testing large components of the experiment. There, the shielding will undergo robotic machining as part of the preparations for the High-Luminosity LHC (#HiLumiLHC) and it will be modified to make space for additional services before returning to ATLAS in April 2027. #DidYouKnow: This was the first major movement of a large shielding component outside the ATLAS site since the start of Long Shutdown 3. ATLAS and CMS narrow in on twin Higgs production 🔎 Finding one #HiggsBoson was hard enough, but physicists at the Large Hadron Collider  (#LHC) are hunting for something even more elusive: pairs of Higgs bosons. At the International Conference on High Energy Physics 2026 (#ICHEP2026), the ATLAS Collaboration and CMS Collaboration presented new constraints on the double-Higgs production rate, providing new insight into how the Higgs boson interacts with itself.
