Darrell Etherington reposted thisDarrell Etherington reposted thisAt PRE, we spend a lot of time studying how AI can correctly predict human behaviour. One pattern we keep seeing is surprising. In our testing, mid-sized LLMs often predict human actions better than the largest, most advanced models. As an example, in one set of experiments, GPT-5.4-mini reached ~90% accuracy, while GPT-5.4 was closer to 60%. We’ve seen similar patterns across other AI models (e.g. Claude, Gemini, etc.), experiments, and industries. Our hypothesis is simple: human choices are often fast and intuitive. Models that “overthink” may actually be worse at simulating what people will do. We’re expanding the testing now, but the signal is becoming hard to ignore.

It's not showing up in unemployment, GDP, or labor productivity. It IS showing up in financial markets, software industry shakeups, and an increasingly competitive battle for market share between OpenAI and Anthropic.

Darrell Etherington reposted thisDarrell Etherington reposted this[🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨] I’m launching a newsletter: Hypertext. 💌 If you want an early look, like or comment on this post. Over the past decade, I’ve written thousands of articles for TechCrunch. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how tech news gets consumed today: constant updates, endless hot takes, and a lot of information with very little signal. That’s the idea behind Hypertext. I want to go back to writing and help you answer this simple question: why does this actually matter? A few examples of topics I want to cover: - Why Arthur Mensch now thinks AI companies should pay a content tax in Europe - What’s happening with Sequoia’s scout program in Europe - What Revolut’s growth really looks like, in charts - Who’s currently raising a VC fund in Paris, and how they’re pitching it The ambition is to make Hypertext a smart briefing on European tech for people who want more than the headline. Who’s in? #tech #startups #newsletter

Darrell Etherington reposted thisDarrell Etherington reposted thisWhen the Strait of Hormuz closes, does the AI buildout slow? It's a reasonable assumption. The chip supply chain crosses seventy borders. East Asian fabs depend on Gulf energy. Specialty chemicals originate in the region. The Financial Times made the case carefully last week. I wanted to test whether the transmission mechanisms actually hold — working through energy costs, the US gas market structure, and the specialty chemical supply chains that fabs actually use (which are not always the ones you'd expect). The short answer is that each link in the causal chain breaks at the structural level, for reasons that are specific to how global commodity markets work. The longer answer is in the piece below. Would welcome pushback from anyone who sees it differently — particularly on the bromine point, which I think is the one case where the dependency is genuinely real.

Darrell Etherington liked thisDarrell Etherington liked thisHear me out: One of the most (unexpectedly) fun parts of my job right now is…procurement? You get to learn a lot about how the tech stack is evolving and how buying and selling is changing right now (and how it’s not). At some level, there’s nothing new under the sun, right? We’re growing, we are consuming some of your favorite AI services quite quickly, we model things out, save on unit economics. But there’s something about how it’s working—the consumption models, what users actually experience in-product that feels tailor-made for them because of what AI can do—that makes working with the toolset to bring everything together really fun. Oh, and if you are in SF and looking for a new biz ops adventure, this is a really fun time to be at a place like Town. Managing the strategic stack is part of the gig, but so is monetization, new market entry—you name it, you’d be doing it. If this sounds like you, shoot me a message.

Many Canadians are grappling with increasing amounts of #debt. And in some cases, saving for #retirement has become an afterthought because of it. In this article, Noushin Ziafati of Newcom Media Inc.'s Advisor.ca spoke to experts who stress that #financialadvisors need to be candid with clients -- even if the best advice is to pay down debt before saving for retirement. https://lnkd.in/gQXKPrPg

Chatting with Christian Dandeneau from IDFusion Software Software is always so wonderful for me - he’s a warm and kind leader with a really refreshing perspective. On this episode of the #MNLshow we had the chance to have a focused discussion on where we’re headed and who gets to participate in that future. Christian’s insights remind me that we’re talking about a lot more than tech and code or cool new tools — the future has at its core: culture, connection and equity. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gHKDPS7H

Digital sovereignty and cultural identity are linked in our daily lives. I see this plan as a critical move for Quebec that should be considered elsewhere too. It will bring meaningful opportunities and implications for marketers and publishers that would completely change the landscape. Thank you Media in Canada for the chance to comment on this issue.

Persona prompting can cause real shifts in an LLM's moral judgements -- which is a particular risk if you are deploying AI in the contact center. The experts at the TELUS Digital Research Hub are doing some incredible work as AI and CX converge. Davi Bastos Costa, Felippe Alves & Renato Vicente’s recent report on the Robustness Paradox outlines the hidden risk that persona prompting can fundamentally shift an AI's underlying moral reasoning. Great insights to help navigate the complexities of model selection and safety. #AIConsulting #AIGovernance #ResponsibleAI #ai #genai #cx

Our Executive Chairman, Richelieu Dennis, joined Bloomberg Markets: The Close to discuss how Sundial Media & Technology Group is responding to this moment of economic transition with the launch of WeLoveUs.shop—an economic platform designed to meet Black women founders where the market is failing them. Today’s reality is tightening capital markets and shrinking job opportunities have pushed nearly 600,000 Black women out of the workforce, even as Black women, owners of nearly 2.7 million businesses, continue to lead entrepreneurial growth while receiving just 1% of venture capital. At Sundial, this moment calls for action. Through Essence Communications Inc. and WeLoveUs.shop, we’re extending a decades-long commitment to building cultural and economic infrastructure, connecting founders to visibility, commerce, and audiences when access matters most. Thank you to Romaine Bostick, CFA and the Bloomberg News team for the thoughtful conversation. Watch the full segment here: https://lnkd.in/eb3_-E9i

Great share Jack Tynan. Protecting Canadian-owned media outlets is so important. We need to protect national sovereignty and invest in local reporting. With increasing consolidation and foreign ownership, there's a danger of: •Less diversity of voices •Reduced coverage of local and regional stories •A shrinking media landscape shaped by foreign interests

Excited to share this latest episode of Toronto Talks! This time we sat down with the brilliant Olivier Blais from Moov AI to talk about the potential focused and practical application of AI. Too many businesses approach AI by throwing tools at employees and encouraging them to stumble into new levels of efficiency. Yes, there should be time and a space for exploration but Moov AI is helping leaders hone in on real problem and harness AI to solve them. As with so many areas of business, when we focus on outcomes over output the results can be transformative. Thank you Olivier for the eye-opening conversation!

The Digital Health Record (DSN) is poised to become the next litmus test for Québec's technological aspirations. Amidst the backdrop of past technological mishaps, the opposition is demanding stricter oversight and accountability. As Québec pledges better governance, the debate intensifies: will the DSN be a beacon of promise or yet another stumble into chaos? 🏛️ **Political Context** In a heated end-of-session debate, accusations fly. The opposition alleges Québec’s digital transformation projects lack proper control. The specter of prior tech failures looms large, casting doubts over governance, contracts, and potential overruns. The DSN emerges as a particularly sensitive issue amid ongoing health sector reorganization. ⚖️ **Divergent Opinions** The opposition voices concerns over repeated failures and opacity, insisting on safeguards, public accountability, and transparent reporting. The government counters with assurances of tighter governance and monitoring—acknowledging the necessity of transformation but emphasizing the need for better oversight. 📢 **Reactions and Controversies** Amidst cries of "digital fiascos," the opposition interlinks various dossiers, demanding political accountability. In response, Québec attempts to differentiate its projects, steering the discourse toward control mechanisms. 📜 **Legislative and Social Consequences** Heightened pressure mounts for audits, performance indicators, and transparent timelines. Public trust remains tenuous; every tech failure erodes confidence in health reforms. Budgetary risks loom, as overruns signal constrained resources for front-line services. ❓ **Key Questions Raised** 1️⃣ Who signs, supervises, and foots the bill when projects go awry? 2️⃣ Will the DSN learn from past mistakes, or repeat them? 3️⃣ What will public reports entail, their frequency, and corrective powers? 4️⃣ How to prevent health sector restructuring from diluting responsibilities? 5️⃣ To what extent will Québec ensure contract transparency? Engage in the conversation and explore the unfolding narrative. Can public trust be restored, and will Québec rise to meet its digital governance challenges with efficacy and transparency? #caq #plq #pq #qs #pcq #assnat #DigitalTransformation #GovernanceReform #PublicAccountability #PoliticalDebate #Technology #Québec #HealthReform Michelle Setlakwe, Députée de Mont-Royal - Outremont Parti Québécois Québec solidaire Parti libéral du Québec Coalition Avenir Québec Parti conservateur du Québec https://apdq.substack.com/

ICYMI VIDEO: Canadian Retail Faces Ongoing Uncertainty as AI and Affordability Pressures Reshape Sector: George Minakakis Canada’s retail sector continues to navigate economic uncertainty, affordability challenges and rapid technological change heading into 2026, according to George Minakakis, founder and CEO of the Inception Retail Group. Minakakis said 2025 was a largely flat year for retail, with performance varying widely by segment. Consumer demand fluctuated and results lacked consistency, leaving many retailers focused on simply weathering the year without major setbacks. He noted that retailers who avoided aggressive discounting and protected their value proposition were often better positioned, as excessive promotions can weaken brand equity. https://lnkd.in/gNsM8UzD #CanadianRetail #RetailTrends #RetailVideo #AIinRetail #AffordabilityCrisis #RetailLeadership #GeorgeMinakakis #RetailStrategy #EconomicUncertainty #FutureOfRetail #CanadaBusiness #RetailInsights

Five years ago, we asked: “Who is really getting funded in Canada’s screen sector?” Today, we have part of the answer…and it’s not looking good. Many funders still don’t track race-based data, and where we do have data, the results are stark: Black, Indigenous and racialized creators receive the smallest share across major programs. French-language BIPOC creators are the worst off. But the data also shows us a path forward: ➡️ Targets work. ➡️ Carve-outs build a bridge to empowerment. ➡️ Mandatory reporting increases accountability. If you believe in a screen sector where every equity exists, share this video. #DataForEquity #ScreenEquityCanada #REMC #FilmForChange #AccountabilityInAction

I moderated a panel on AI in comms in January and we sold out. At the end of the evening, everyone told me they hadn't wanted it to end. It was a packed agenda and everyone found some useful learnings to implement. But there was still so much more to explore. This special edition is the follow up to that first conversation and once again, the panelists have given us lots of fresh takeaways. Thanks to Tina Dealwis and Prachi Shailendra, MA for running with this idea. Thanks to Kenny Yum, Veronica Langvee and Rob Trewartha, MA, MCM for capturing their thoughts in writing. We'll keep exploring this topic because it's an evolving issue. #AIinComms
