What is Blasphemous 2?

Penance never ends.

Blasphemous 2 is an upcoming ruthless platformer game set in the world of Cvstodia where the Penitent One returns to continue the endless cycle of death and resurrection once again. The Game Kitchen's success with its predecessor Blasphemous has fans all around the world wanting more of the game, bringing us to today, where Blasphemous 2 aims to deliver a fresh and improved experience for both new and veteran players. 

The story of the Blasphemous 2 picks up from the finale of the Wounds of Eventide DLC, where the Heart in the Sky was heard beating again and foretells the return of the Miracle and the birth of a new miracle child while the Penitent One was laid to rest, foreboding a dark and grim future for the Cvstodians. Without any details to the timeline, The Blasphemous 2 trailer shows the Penitent One rising again to fight the monsters and bloodthirsty creatures plaguing the land of Cvstodia with a new arsenal of weapons and improved abilities.

Fans loved the Metroidvania-style gameplay matched with a hack'n'slash action from its predecessor. The Game Kitchen follows the blueprint of Blasphemous where they bring an audiovisual treat for platformer players with a knack for highly-challenging game experiences with enemy behavior variation, some will chase relentlessly and bosses exhibit unique attack patterns. In the same world filled with secrets and hidden rooms to discover, a journey filled with excitement awaits.

Follow along as the Penitent One encounters various NPCs, each with their own stories and quests that will add more depth to the lore-rich world of Cvstodia. The Resurrection of the Penitent One

The story takes place after the events of the Wounds of Eventide DLC from Blasphemous. In the finale, the Penitent One was able to free Cvstodia from the curse that is plaguing their land. The Last Son of the Miracle and the Highwills were defeated successfully and the Penitent One, who was kept alive by the Miracle, finally passes away. His sword, the Mea Culpa also vanished into dust, gone with its creator.

The Penitent One's body was put to rest by his allies Deogracias and Crisanta. However, in the post-credits cutscene, a still shows a womb descending once again from the clouds above the land of Cvstodia foreboding a sequel and is also the ending of the Wounds of Eventide.

The trailer of Blasphemous 2 shows the Penitent One awakening from his slumber and traversing a strange and unfamiliar land. After losing the Mea Culpa in the last battle, the Penitent One can now wield more weapons with new abilities that will help him defeat the monstrosities that plague Cvstodia.

The Miracle or the High Wills

In the canonical ending of  Blasphemous, it was revealed that The High Wills were recognized as the true masterminds behind The Miracle. The Penitent One fought Escribar twice and the second fight will put him to rest for good. Then, once they have settled the score with Escribar or the Last Son of the Miracle, The Penitent One and Crisanta will confront the High Wills.

Comprised of a trio of human faces, the High Wills selfishly consume the Cvstodians' desire for penance and used the Miracle to gain access to their faith and cause the devotees suffering. Once defeated, the people are freed from the power of the Miracle, and the Penitent One dies in the aftermath.

In Blasphemous 2, the trailer shows the celestial entity hovering over the land of Cvstodia once more and forebodes the birth of a new miracle child, which, the Penitent One must stop or else the curse will befall Cvstodia again. This is the beginning of penance anew for the Penitent One.

Expanded Weapon Arsenal

More weapons, more abilities, and more combos. The game is set on creating an expanded and refined experience for players and they aim to deliver this by providing the players an option to choose their weapon. At the moment, there are at least 3 unique weapon types the Penitent One can use, and each of these weapons also has innate abilities that players can learn as they improve their skills with it. This brings an all-new level of excitement to how much the gameplay can improve once a weapon has been mastered.

Along with a new arsenal of weapons, it also comes with special attacks to further enhance the combat options available to players. These abilities can range from powerful area-of-effect (AoE) attacks to ranged attacks and even defensive maneuvers that are specific only to certain weapons. Each of the weapons now has a skill tree, where players can learn and master it. The Game Kitchen mentioned that these weapons can be quickly swapped out allowing a smooth transition and expanded abilities.

In the images above, the Penitent One can do multiple moves while wielding different weapons. The first image shows a dash movement with a Rapier/Dagger allowing for a swift movement that you can use to dodge enemy attacks or to access hard-to-reach places. The Penitent One can now also protect himself with a strong defense by putting a shield up and allowing to deflect incoming attacks.

In the previous game, parrying is a major part of the combat, and the same is true for Blasphemous 2. The timing is still the trick to mastering this movement that will allow players to engage in it. With the more fluid combat, players will certainly feel the movements to be more agile and accurate. Some of the weapons that were seen used by the Penitent One is a Greatsword, some dual-wielded weapons, and some one-handed weapons. Players should be on the lookout for these new weapon choices that will accommodate more playstyles and will give players the freedom to experiment with their environment.

Lore-rich Narrative

The plot never runs thin in the land of Cvstodia. Blasphemous 2 weaves a dark and intriguing web of stories throughout its gameplay featuring a haunting storyline filled with NPCs who add layers of depth to the history of Cvstodia. Engaging with the NPCs will uncover their tales while rewarding the player. There are also hidden texts, cryptic symbols, and mysteries that await discovery. Created by the same team that created Blasphemous, The Game Kitchen maintains the atmospheric and immersive experience of its predecessor. From the meticulously created visuals to its beautiful and haunting soundtrack, the game sets a dark and foreboding tone. 

Character Progression and Customization

Players will now have the ability to enhance their character's abilities and attributes through a progression system. They will be able to unlock new skills, upgrade existing abilities, and acquire more powerful items throughout their journeys. The new progression system will allow players to tailor their character growth suitable to their playstyle. The combat mechanics are built on the foundation of the predecessor game while featuring more fluid and precise combat, and now with a diverse selection of weapons.

The Game Kitchen confirmed that weapons can be switched in combat, and this leads us to believe that players are allowed to simultaneously carry the weapons with them, and also upgrade the skill tree. This feature brings new opportunities for experimentation and will showcase the creativity of players when tackling situations. The Mea Culpa in the original game had modifiers added to it, and the same upgrade mechanic is expected to be added in the new Blaspphemous 2.

Enemy Variety and Behaviors

Each of the enemies that you will encounter in Blasphemous 2 will now have varying behaviors. At times, you may find it tempting to run away from your foes, but you'll be surprised to know that certain enemies will chase you relentlessly urging you to finish the fight that you started. This brings the difficulty up a notch and encourages players to adapt to the combat style of each of their enemies, especially bosses. Some enemies from the previous game will return to Blasphemous 2 and though they are familiar, each will have something new added to these enemies.

Heeding the fans' concerns, The Game Kitchen has also spiced up the combat in Blasphemous 2. The Penitent One can now do finishers or executions. These are unique move sets that the Penitent One can do to exhibit more fluid movement and more blood and gore in the game. There are multiple unique moves that the Penitent One can use, and it is believed that these depend on the weapon that is used at the time of execution.

In the previous game, enemies will start attacking the Penitent One as soon as players are within range. The attacks will vary from melee or range, or weak or strong attacks. The Parrying mechanic is intact in Blasphemous 2 which allows the Penitent one to combat a weak attack, and if successful, will make the enemy vulnerable to a strong attack. Once you are able to deal a significant amount of damage, an execution attack can be performed with one push of a button.

Challenging Platforming

There are more movements to be learned and timing will be the key. Blasphemous 2 challenges its players to utilize their environment to overcome obstructions, solve puzzles, and defeat formidable bosses. With a more fluid movement, players can expect precise control over their character to allow seamless dodges, precise strikes, and quick reactions. These sections will challenge the player's agility and reflexes. Aside from being mechanically challenging, the game also presents situations in which players would need to do problem-solving. 

These puzzles may appear randomly at any part of the game which includes manipulating objects within the world, deciphering symbols, and even discovering hidden patterns to solve. These will provide access to new areas, unlock valuable rewards, and make progress with the story. 

Non-Linear Exploration

Every player's experience will be different in Blasphemous 2. With a non-linear world for players to explore, there are hidden paths to be discovered, secret chambers to unlock, and even shortcuts within the world of Cvstodia. The game encourages the players to explore where they may find rewards such as valuable items, upgrades, and even mysterious NPCs. All these encounters will deepen the immersion and experience of every player.

Given the freedom to explore, players can also decide to engage with the NPCs that they will meet in the game. The choice is up to you whether you will help these souls and each choice made will carry weight and consequence in Blasphemous 2. Aside from NPCs, players were able to interact with a Prie Dieu in the previous game that servers as a save and checkpoint. The altar is vital to the progression of the game as it refills the health flasks the Penitent One is carrying, then afterwards, you are free to continue your journey. 

The game places a strong emphasis on the freedom of players to decide the fate of the Penitent One. Throughout the game, you will find points of interest where your decision can alter the course of the game, shaping the narrative, and ultimately deciding the fate of Cvstodia.

About The Penitent One

The Penitent One is a rogue nomad and the last survivor of the massacre of the "Silent Sorrow". The Penitent One is the main protagonist of the game and the one players will take control of. The Penitent One once wielded a sword called the Mea Culpa and as you progress through the game, you'll be able to discover various items and abilities that can aid The Penitent One in battle and to increase the odds of surviving. In his previous journey, he was able to successfully stop the rule of the High Wills over Cvstodia by defeating the Last Son of The Miracle. In the final battle, the Penitent One takes his last breath and was put to rest by his allies.

In Blasphemous 2, the Penitent One awakens in a strange land and sets forth on a journey to discover the root of the destruction in order to free the land of Cvstodia from the twisted nightmare it has been thrown into.
