Black Myth Wukong Game Story Overview

Black Myth Wukong is based on the Chinese novel "Journey to the West", it follows the journey of Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, as he embarks on a quest while facing various mythical creatures and monsters inspired by Chinese folklore. The main character, Sun Wukong, has been granted immortality, but this immortality has become both a blessing and a curse. This allowed him to witness centuries pass but it also isolates him from mortal life. He was able to witness the rise and fall of civilizations as he stayed alone. The emotional toll that comes with immortality leads to inner turmoil the Sun Wukong will hopefully express. While the game draws inspiration from the classic tale, it may take creative liberties in terms of reimagining the overall narrative of the game.

Black Myth: Wukong is now available on Xbox Series X|S!

As promised, the best-selling ARPG has now hit the Xbox platform with its cutting-edge developments to ensure an optimized experience for Xbox platform gamers, released last August 20, 2025. You will now have the experience of playing the role of the Destined one, Sun Wukong, in challenging the foes based on the Journey to the West, a classic Chinese folklore, conquering all the obstacles, and unveiling the truth about the legendary past of the glorious hero.

Published and developed by Game Science, they will now give you the capability of enjoying this Single-Player ARPG, optimized for Xbox Series X|S, with 60+fps video rendering experience, Spatial and Dolby Atmos sound, compatibility with console keyboard and mouse, and regularly logged Xbox cloud saving of game progress and Xbox achievements. One of the showcased features so far in terms of graphics for the game experience would be the Balance mode, where you get to enjoy the game's image quality and frame rate with the 120Hz mode enabled in your console settings.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Announced!

Announced: August 20, 2025, on Gamescom 2025.

It is the developer's tradition to announce any progress on the game every August 20th of the year, and they are rereleasing an update on the same date this year. As the developers are still working on finishing the project, the footage and trailer for the game are very limited. The game Black Myth: Zhong Kui runs under the same Chinese folklore concept, and according to the developers, it will remain a solo-player ARPG, which pretty much follows the same mechanics and interface as the previous game, Black Myth: Wukong, feels, perhaps with some notable improvements that we are yet to discover. What will surely excite the players a lot would be playing with a totally different character this time around.

What is the Return of Rivals Challenge?

The Return of Rivals Challenge is part of the December Major Patch update and is a special post-game mode unlocked after completing the main game at least once. This mode can be accessed through the Challenge option at any Keeper's Shrine, offering players the chance to face former opponents in one-on-one duels. Players, known as the Destined One, can select a rival and choose from three difficulty levels to tailor the challenge to their preferences. However, if any opponents were left undefeated in the main game, their corresponding rebattle will remain unavailable.

Journeyer's Chart Feature in Black Myth Wukong

The new December update also introduces the Journeyer's Chart. Which is a helpful feature that provides maps of the areas you explore. These charts are made by someone who has carefully recorded the landscapes to guide and mark important locations for travelers. You can unlock the Journeyer's Chart when you first visit Black Wind Mountain and meet the Keeper. After this, new charts become available whenever you enter a new territory. These charts can be purchased at the Keeper's Shrine, making it easier to find your way and keep track of your journey. This feature is perfect for players who want to explore without missing key landmarks or areas.

What is the Gauntlet of Legends Challenge?

This one is also available after completing the game at least once. Also found under the Challenge option at any Keeper's Shrine, this mode lets players, known as the Destined One, battle multiple former opponents in succession. Players can customize the difficulty by applying curses, which enhance the challenge and provide a more intense experience. However, any opponents left undefeated in the main game will make the corresponding gauntlet unavailable. Unlike the original encounters, some enemies in this mode may surprise players with new moves, requiring careful preparation and adaptability. Completing a gauntlet rewards players with rare treasures, including weapons like the Fanged Cyan Staff and Qing Mallet, equipment such as the Three Hill Crown, and special items like Glimmering Scale Pellets and Sour Wine.

Exciting New Trailer for Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong released another exciting trailer and it does show a handful of interesting things and we are here to take a quick look at it. The trailer starts with a bit of Wukong's headdress falling out from the sky. Plus multiple showcases for the bosses and movesets that players can do in combat. The trailer shows a possible faction that players will be included in. We can see a handful of youngbloods being trained to fight the vicious entities that threaten the world and there is a high chance that they also govern the world itself or the faction that governs the balance. 

Regarding the Bosses, we had a glimpse of possibly some of the early bosses in the game. First is a flying beast that can easily be countered by Wu Kong's over-extending staff. A monk with an inflated head that can dish out physical damage with its bare fist, another enraged monk that can do lunge attacks directly to players, and a mutated flower that can release concentrated energy that can inflict lightning damage to Wukong and who knows what the giant Arachnid can do to players. The trailer ends when Wu Kong picks up his headdress. 

Diverse Bosses in Black Myth Wukong

Going back to the bosses, it is clear that we will have diverse bosses who have different strengths and weaknesses. Meaning, players will surely enjoy the said bosses and immerse themselves by knowing each of the boss's weaknesses and forming a strategy when trying to beat these tough adversaries. We've previously mentioned that there will be flying enemies in Black Myth Wukong the recent trailer confirmed that there will be a flying boss that can be easily knocked into the ground by performing the extending staff ability. 

We can also determine that there will be unblockable attacks in this game such as grab attacks or projectile attacks that will render Wukong defenseless. However, a lot can happen at this point and it is also possible that the shown special attacks that led to Wukong's defenseless state would be a part of a scripted sequence in Combat.

Shrines in Black Myth Wukong

The checkpoint stations in Black Myth Wukong are called Shrines, they act like any other bonfires in various souls games where you may upgrade your skills, and spells, and fast travel from shrine to shrine. While there are tons of material you can collect through your journey in the game, you can take them back to the Shrine to craft various potions or enhance your gear to fit your playstyles better. Though, resting at a Shrine will also bring back minor enemies.

Exciting Abilities in Black Myth Wukong

The trailer provided a handful of ability samples that players can take advantage of. The notable one is the extending pole of Wu Kong which we can take down flying enemies and it is possible that can also hit bosses' weak parts and the like. In the trailer, Wu Kong performed this move against the flying beast and after performing the move, the boss was quickly staggered and soon after, Wu Kong started the pull off combination attacks.

This move is highly versatile and can be useful in a lot of situations. This can give players an ample amount of breathing space when battling bosses as this move gives them the ability to maintain distance while damaging targets. The second noticeable ability is the spinning attack that can deal damage to multiple targets. This is extremely useful when dealing with a group of enemies like what we've seen in the trailer. It is possible that this move can be canceled anytime the player wishes to maintain versatility and freedom in terms of movement. 

Stone Form in Black Myth Wukong

Moving on to the next one which is Wu Kong's ability to harden himself by transforming his body into stone or metal. In the trailer, before the enranged monk pulls off the lunging attack, Wu Kong hardened himself before the attack landed. When the attack landed, it somehow felt like a parry move instead of blocking attacks. After parrying the attack, Wu Kong quickly somersaulted away from the bosses and prepared for his next move.

Garments and Armors in Black Myth Wukong

One thing that we noticed is Wu Kong's ever-changing garments and armor. It is yet to be discovered what could be the possible changes or additions that armor and garments can provide to Wukong. It is possible that will provide special resistances and even stats, like in other soulslike titles. You can collect armor sets that carry different types of stats, attributes, and protection that will benefit you in your playstyle. One thing is for sure though, these garments are looking so interesting in terms of style so far. From padded armor and stylish protective equipment to cool-looking light garments with bright colors and striking resemblance.

NPC Stories in Black Myth Wukong

There are several NPC side quests you will encounter and you will learn their heartfelt stories while getting treated to a visually stunning cutscene and obtaining different rewards upon completing their quests.

In the recent trailer, the Game Science or the developers of Black Myth Wukong paid attention to Wukong's headdress. It could be the main focus of the narrative or even define Wu Kong's identity however, what this headdress truly means can be a lot of things. The headdress is called "Mangmao" in Chinese, which translates to "python cap" or "serpent crown" in English. This distinctive headdress, resembling two antennas or horns, is commonly associated with figures from Chinese mythology and history, like the Monkey King and Lu Bu.

In Chinese culture, the Mangmao headdress represents power, authority, and divinity. It often appears in traditional Chinese art and literature to highlight the special abilities or status of its wearers. The Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, from the novel "Journey to the West," and Lu Bu, a historical and folkloric figure known for his military skill, are famous examples of characters depicted with this headdress.

Become the legendary Monkey King in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, players get to play as Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King. Based on the novel, he is a monkey born from a stone who acquires extraordinary powers through Taoist practices and eventually gains immortality. Sun Wukong is known for his immense speed, strength, shape-shifting abilities, and his magical staff called the Ruyi Jingu Bang.

His ability to transform into different forms is a key aspect of his character, and in the novel, he is able to transform into 70 different forms, but this would be highly impractical and difficult to implement in the game, so we'll only probably see some of these forms make it into the game. His magical staff can extend and change its size at the user's will, making it a powerful weapon that can cover close and medium-range combat.

Black Myth Wukong is not an open-world game

The world in Black Myth: Wukong is vast and meticulously crafted, as players get to explore diverse landscapes, towering mountains, ancient temples, and hidden caves, among other things. However, players should not expect an open-world experience as the game is mission-based, and each mission seems to take you to a different location in which you'll have to defeat a boss at the end of each one.

Some areas may be larger than others that's why it can look like you're playing an open-world game. But, if we learned something from playing other souls-like games, it's that you can't leave a stone unturned, and every nook and cranny may hold a secret waiting to be discovered.

In Black Myth: Wukong, players will likely encounter creatures and enemies derived from Chinese mythology, so they should expect a variety of mythical creatures such as magical beasts, spirits, demons, gods, and other constructs.

Experience a version of the Journey to the West in Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong is set in a fantastical version of ancient China based on the popular Chinese novel, Journey to the West.

The game blends Chinese mythology with dark fantasy, and players can expect to have encounters with different gods, demons, and other mythical creatures as they explore the world and unravel Sun Wukong's mythical journey.

Dynamic Combat System in Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong's combat is heavily influenced by the soul genre, pioneered by the Dark Souls franchise, as you'll see from the gameplay footage the stamina bar depletes when Wukong performs different actions like dodging, running, or attacking. When it comes to recovering health, this game also has a healing gourd to replenish your HP.

Your main weapon will be Sun Wukong's magical staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang. Most of your attacks will come from this weapon, but since Wukong is an ancient mythological creature, he will have some degree of magic at his disposal.

Epic Boss Battles in Black Myth Wukong

As we've seen from countless gameplay footage, we'll be having boss fights that involve iconic beings drawn from Chinese mythology. With over 80 bosses in the game, all bosses come in different forms and sizes, we'll likely encounter humanoid bosses as well as giant bosses similar to a Monster Hunter boss. Black Myth: Wukong seems to focus more on challenging boss fights than level design and the enemies you encounter in between, but that's not to say that the locations and areas you'll explore won't be mesmerizing, and the enemies you encounter be as challenging.

Boss encounters will take place in unique locations specific to each enemy. You'll encounter bosses in massive bell towers, a burning courtyard, a frozen lake, and many more.

As the Destined One, you will uncover the stories behind a variety of characters, delving beyond your battles with them, to taste the love and hate, greed and fury they once had and still carry with them.

Combat Overview

The combat in Black Myth: Wukong places a great emphasis on speed and relentless offense instead of slower, and calculated attacks like you'd see from Dark Souls. Due to the nature of Sun Wukong, he is known for his great speed and strength, so making the most of his agility will be crucial in attaining victory between combat encounters. And since you can dodge almost instantaneously, players would be able to make use of their fast reflexes and dodge at the right moment.

Dodging in Black Myth Wukong

Dodging in Black Myth: Wukong is one of your main defensive options, and it's much more fluid as it can be performed instantaneously. The speed at which you can perform this action almost feels limitless.

As you progress through the game, you will be able to unlock a skill where if you perform a perfect dodge, it will create a phantom copy of yourself from where you evade, and it will automatically counterattack an enemy that tries to attack it. If you perform a perfectly timed dodge, it will reward you with focus that will fill up around your stance icon in the lower right. Once that has been filled, you will earn a focus point. Focus points allow you to perform powerful chained attacks toward your enemy, focus points can also be used to unlock various types of special skills in your skill tree.

Different Stances in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, you'll be able to swap into different stances to highlight a particular combat style at any given time. There are only 3 stances, which are the Smash Stance, Pillar Stance, and Thrust Stance.

Players can switch between these stances to either focus on stabbing and poking enemies with the staff, or use it for wide-angle sweeps that focus on targeting multiple enemies at once. Since players can switch between different stances at any time, they can chain together combos. 

The Smash Stance is the default stance that you obtain at the start of the game. This stance allows him to perform both light and heavy attacks that can be chained into a combination of attacks. The Pillar Stance can be unlocked when you reach level 5, instead of having your overhead strong attack, you can stand on the tip of your staff and avoid attacks from various bosses or enemies from the ground as long as you have the stamina for it. If you are able to gain a focus point from standing on your staff, you can use it to perform a heavy overhead strike as you leap down from your staff. The Thrust Stance can be unlocked when you reach level 20, that has heavy thrust attacking capabilities.

Customization in Black Myth Wukong

Customization will play a significant role in Black Myth: Wukong, but this was not something we had access to during the demo. But best believe that players would be able to customize their gear, and discover powerful artifacts, armor, and weapons throughout their adventure. Upgrading gear is also essential, and balancing both the offensive and defensive capabilities of your gear becomes a strategic option especially if you're up against an unfamiliar foe.

There haven't been any specifics mentioned about what types of gear you'll be able to place onto Sun Wukong but we know that these are in the game.

Character progression in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, progression will likely come from obtaining focus points and upgrading spells that you receive from certain bosses. There are also certain spell interactions that the player can learn that may not be too apparent at first.

For example, drinking a healing gourd will be more effective when you're inside the ring of fire as compared to when you drink it outside of the ring of fire.

Creating Clones in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, players have the ability to create clones out of thin air. This is one of Sun Wukong's special abilities, and it has a lot of practical combat applications. One of which is to cause a distraction and take advantage of a situation where the enemy or boss is distracted, lead them into a certain direction, and open them up for a well-timed attack.

This can also be useful when you're being overwhelmed by enemies, as the clones can take the hits for you, giving you time to recuperate and replenish your HP.

You cannot block in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, you cannot block enemy attacks, and you'll need to rely on your reflexes to perform a dodge at the right time.

However, there's an ability in the game that lets you take on a "stone form", which will allow you to take a hit and then attack afterward, similar to Mortal Shell.

Shapeshifting in Black Myth Wukong

Another special ability that Sun Wukong possesses is the ability to transform and shapeshift into a different creature. In Black Myth: Wukong, players can transform almost immediately and this can add tons of strategic depth and options in combat situations. Whether you transform into an agile insect, a hulking beast, or something in between, each form grants unique skills and all of these forms have strategic advantages. Adaptability is the key in certain battles, and switching between forms at the right moment can turn the tide in combat. When you shapeshift into a different creature, you will also gain back your full health, giving you a little relief if you are against a boss.

Some forms were already showcased in different gameplay footage, there is this bug form that was one of the first transformations shown in the earlier trailers, setting the stage for some monologue and story exposition.

We don't have any confirmation whether this form can be used in combat as it looks like it has no practical way of dealing damage, but we can see it as a way to incorporate stealth into the game, whether you're trying to sneak into a camp and catch enemies by surprise, or maybe it can be used to dodge enemy attacks as a last resort.

Sun Wukong can also take the form of some defeated enemies, though probably not all enemy forms can be added to your disposal.

There is some footage where Sun Wukong can be seen transforming into a massive gray feline, and instead of using the iconic black iron staff, Sun Wukong makes use of his fists or claws in combat. This form lets Sun Wukong deal massive AoE damage.

Another form that was able to make an appearance was an unnamed fiery martial artist who possesses a double-bladed staff where each end is set ablaze.

This form seems to deal both physical and fire damage, and the fire stays on the enemy once you are able to land a hit on them.

There was also a unique form that was shown where the whole upper body of the creature was just covered in rock and mud.

This form doesn't seem to make use of any traditional attacks as it only has its legs to move, but it can ram itself into enemies to deal damage.

Skill Trees in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, skill trees will allow players to allocate points, enhance combat prowess, unlock new moves and abilities, and improve survivability. You can accumulate Focus Points as you attack and perform perfect dodges and use those Focus Points to either perform a chained heavy attack or use it later to upgrade in your skill tree. You will also accumulate Willpower when you defeat enemies, when your Willpower bar is full, you will receive a Spark. You can use Sparks to purchase upgrades from your skill trees. However, if you die before reaching a Shrine, you will lose half of your Willpower. The different skill trees you can upgrade are for Passive Buffs, Magic and Transformations, and Staff and Stances. You can respec your Spark Points whenever you want to fit your playstyle.

Consumables in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, players will be able to collect various potions and elixirs to help them enhance certain combat capabilities depending on whether they want to offset some of their weaknesses or lean heavily towards one stat group.

When was Black Myth Wukong Announced?

Black Myth: Wukong was announced back in February 2020, it was also originally developed using Unreal Engine 4, but was later changed to Unreal Engine 5 so that developers could leverage the advanced capabilities of the software and improve its already visually stunning graphics.
