I finally fixed the annoying Samsung Galaxy camera bump wobble with a simple ring

Samsung Galaxy phones have a dirty secret: the official thickness measurements do not include the camera bump. Most smartphones have this same secret, but Samsung’s design choices make it a particularly annoying problem. I set out to fix it.

The discrepancy between body thickness and camera bump thickness feels a bit dishonest, but it’s not actually the main issue. In combination with the off-centered, vertical stack of cameras, Samsung phones are horribly unbalanced when placed flat on a hard surface. Thankfully, it’s easy enough to fix this design flaw.

Samsung’s best phones are annoyingly wobbly

It’s such an obvious problem

Starting with the Galaxy S21 series five years ago, Samsung has organized the rear cameras on its top phones in a vertical stack at the top-left. At first, this was completely fine—the cameras didn’t stick out far enough to really matter. Things took a turn this year, though.

The Galaxy S26 series stuck with this same camera arrangement, but the camera bump got considerably bigger. The official thickness of Galaxy S26 Ultra, for example, is listed as “7.9mm.” However, when you include the camera bump, it’s actually 12.3mm. That’s nearly an extra 4.5mm protruding out of one side.

My colleague, Cory Gunther, wrote about his gripes with the wobble on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The situation only got worse with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, which is when it arrived on my radar. The camera bump on the Z Fold 8 Ultra is a whopping 5mm—4.25mm on the smaller Z Fold 8. You can see just how bad it is in the GIF below.

We’re not alone in noticing this, either. Anyone who has used one of these phones will immediately notice the wobble. It’s been brought up many times over the years in various Reddit threads. Clearly, this is an issue in need of a fix.

A small accessory with a big effect

You might think that a case would help, but they almost never do. For example, Samsung’s official Carbon Magnet case for the Z Fold 8 Ultra only eliminates 0.7mm of the camera bump’s thickness. This is simply a problem that can’t be solved unless it’s directly addressed.

Thankfully, the solution is pretty simple, and we only have to look to Google for inspiration. The Pixel 11 Pro XL has nearly the exact same size camera bump, but since the cameras are centered in a horizontal row, the offset is evenly distributed. It doesn’t lie flat, but it doesn’t wobble.

That’s the answer—even distribution. All we need is something of equal thickness opposite the camera bump. Thankfully, while Samsung’s camera bump is substantial, it’s also an easy shape to measure. I was able to whip up a solution in Fusion pretty quickly. Here’s what I came up with.

It’s nothing more than a ring that fits snugly around the camera housing with a horizontal bump that spans the back of the phone at the same height as the cameras. It fits tightly enough not to need any adhesive—though it wouldn’t hurt—and the rounded-over bump allows it to still slide easily into your pocket.

But enough about design, how does it actually work? Very well! As you can see above, the wobble has been completely eliminated while typing with the phone on a flat surface. It’s a massive upgrade in usability. You might think it’s a small thing to complain about, but it’s genuinely frustrating.
