Lessons from the ReNew Jersey Business Summit & Expo

This week, I had the privilege of sitting among 1,000 business leaders, innovators, and policymakers at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce’s (NJCC) ReNew Jersey Business Summit & Expo in Atlantic City. Seated in the second row with Scott Goldstein, NJCC Communications Manager, I experienced firsthand the energy and engagement that only comes from being in the room together. As a member of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce board, I left energized and reminded of something fundamental: communication and face-to-face engagement are the lifeblood of business and government alike.
The room wasn’t blue. It wasn’t red. It was purple, a vibrant mix of perspectives and priorities all working toward one goal: moving New Jersey forward. This shared purpose is exactly what effective branding creates in business—alignment, clarity, and trust. When people engage directly, without hiding behind social media, ideas flow faster, partnerships form, and action becomes inevitable.
A moment that struck me came as Governor Mikie Sherrill entered the room. Everyone in my view stood. It was a simple yet profound gesture. It wasn’t about politics; it was about showing support for leadership and change. In branding, we talk about signals: the small actions, gestures, and consistent messages that tell the world who you are and what you stand for. This room of business leaders sent a clear signal: New Jersey is ready to act, invest, and collaborate.
The discussions on stage reinforced principles we see every day in brand strategy. Lt. Gov. Dale G. Caldwell, Governor Mikie Sherrill, PSEG Chair and CEO Ralph LaRossa, and Amtrak Chairman Anthony Coscia shared a unified message: results matter more than rhetoric, and partnership drives impact. From cutting red tape to streamlining workforce development and supporting innovation, their focus on execution is what moves brands, public or private, forward.
I also witnessed the candid insights of Rich Butkus, CEO of Control Point Associates, and Scott Kirby of United Airlines. Both shared how strategy, intelligence, and calculated risk-taking were essential to growing their businesses even in challenging economic times. Their stories reaffirmed a lesson that resonates in branding and marketing: leaders who invest, adapt, and communicate clearly during uncertainty not only survive but thrive.
