Fast learning
mtyay
This is a great app for learning a new language while working full time. It breaks up everything in small chunks that are easily digestible. Different teaching methods help in learning but also with engaging with the content in different ways throughout my day. In commute i can learn through the listening tab and in the afternoon i can dive deep into the lessons. Overall this is an inclusive and solid app to have. It’s visually engaging and fun to use and uses positive reinforcement to boost your learning. 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 !
A good app, some limitations, terrible accent of speakers
John joannou
I’m using the app to learn Turkish and Russian. The app is very good but it has some drawbacks. -There is nowhere to find the theory behind the language - you have to learn by the examples given and you have to make the decisions why a word is written this way or that way. E.g. the difference between yaşlı and eski. Both mean old but "yaşlı" is used for living beings to describe old age, while "eski" is used for objects, places, or things to describe not being new or being old. This ıs not explained! I had to search google on my own after making mistakes A few pages with a reference would have helped a lot -It doesn’t show you the alphabet. And the worst about the app is that the persons/speakers that give examples have terrible accents and speak too fast and it’s very hard to understand what they’re saying resulting in making mistakes when trying to figure out what they said. It’s like having a person from Scotland teach you English accent. And when you speak fast the program doesn’t like it and forces you to say 1-letter or 2-letter words over and over as if you are stupid and can’t spell 1 letter. The other problem I found with this App is that they promote an LGBT agenda: “my brother’s husband…” Now Say that loud
Hearts Were Better: A Critique of the New Energy System
Machoulini
Duolingo recently replaced its classic heart system with a new “energy” mechanic. At first glance, it might seem like a small change—but it’s significantly altered the user experience, and not in a good way.Previously, users had five hearts. Each mistake would cost a heart, and once they were gone, you had to wait or practice to earn them back. Now, a new energy system limits the number of lessons based on a daily energy bar—even without mistakes. Obviously the fact that the “most perfect lessons in a day” award still exists in the app is now pointless except for Super or Max users, since many of us don’t have enough gems to continue our lessons and don’t want to pay or don’t have enough financial support to pay.If the goal is marketing and monetization, that’s fine—but pressure isn’t the way to build loyalty. A less aggressive, more educational approach would be far more effective in the long run. Language learning shouldn’t feel like a sales funnel. TL;DR The point I want to highlight is that this new energy system feels like a marketing trap and makes the app less enjoyable than before. Everything feels less competitive simply because the energy system is extremely limiting for users who don’t want to or can’t pay. Personally, — and I think many people would agree with this — I think we should keep things fair towards all users and let the experience be good for everyone, even if it means some users have more “benefits” for paying.
Our mascot owl, Duo, is trading in his usual diet of mice for bugs this week. Yup, we’re squashing those pesky bugs to make the experience better for all of you.
