Microsoft’s Project Silica writes data into glass using ultrafast laser pulses, creating microscopic structures that can be read through automated imaging and decoded with machine learning. Recent advances demonstrate storage in fused silica and in borosilicate glass, a widely available material. A 12 sq cm piece can store 4.84 TB. Experiments indicate the encoded structures could remain stable for millennia. Designing archives is no longer only a digital problem. It is a material one. #DubaiFuture
