New LEGO collaborations are being announced at every turn, and while not all of them are well-received — the community’s disappointment in the LEGO Pokemon collab has been well-documented — a majority of the crossovers do tend to be popular. Hopefully, the upcoming LEGO x Hello Kitty crossover is more comparable to Minecraft and Animal Crossing than it is to Pokemon, as Sanrio fans have high hopes for the collab.

One thing working in a LEGO Hello Kitty set’s favor is that all the generic or lesser known brick sets based on the Sanrio IP are adorable. For example, Jazwares’ BLDR bricks have done a lot with the IP. Not only can fans get the minifigures of Hello Kitty herself, Keroppi, Kuromi, My Melody, Cinnamaroll, and Pompompurin, but there are some sets that allow players to build Kerropi Mart and Kuromi’s haunted house. Essentially, these existing non-LEGO sets serve as a proof-of-concept for how good the official LEGO collab could be, giving fans an idea of what to expect.

A 2022 LEGO Idea from creator Bulldozer also shows what a Sanrio project could look like.

What LEGO Hello Kitty Will Look Like is Currently a Mystery

Having the BLDR sets to use as a springboard for one’s imagination is a great thing considering that there are no actual details on the collab beyond its release window. LEGO Hello Kitty is set to launch in January 2027, per Brick Tap’s verified sources. Whether there will just be one initial set with Miss Kitty herself, or whether the whole Sanrio cast will get the LEGO treatment, is a complete mystery. However, fans are clearly hoping for the latter, as many are attached to specific Sanrio characters as opposed to the brand’s main mascot.

In the comments of Brick Tap’s post on the LEGO Leaks subreddit, fans have been quick to share their requests for specific characters. There seems to be a good deal of desire for an egg-cellent Gudetama set, as well as Kuromi and Cinnamoroll representation. Tuxedo Sam is cited as another desired addition, though getting his signature shape right may require a slightly different minifigure design from LEGO’s usual aesthetic. Regardless, it’s clear that fans are hoping for more than just Hello Kitty herself.

Additionally, given comments like the one from Random0101User, it seems like builders are against the idea of anything resembling LEGO Pokemon and its large, “ugly” designs. Instead of big figures where players build the Sanrio characters themselves, minifigures of the most iconic ones as well as some themed buildings and shops seem like the ideal path to take. Again, this would be comparable to the BLDR sets, as well as something like LEGO Animal Crossing and its many different packs.

With comments also taking shots at the controversial LEGO Smart Bricks, it’s clear that there are a lot of things fans do and do not want from this particular collab. For now, though, all fans can do is wait until January 2027 looms closer and some official details on the set are confirmed.
