Split Fiction director Josef Fares recently shared an on-set photo of his next game, and it looks like Hazelight Studios might ditch its signature two-player co-op format this time. Hazelight's most recent game, Split Fiction, received four nominations at The Game Awards 2025. Before that, it created It Takes Two, which won TGA's Game of the Year Award in 2021.

Hazelight Studios has crafted some of the best two-player co-op games, with each one being different than the other. The theme of their next title cannot easily be predicted, especially since the company's games have showcased diverse plots in the past. From clashing couples to two prisoners trying to escape, Hazelight's projects have shown great range.

Split Fiction Should Be the New Industry Standard For Co-Op Games

Split Fiction brings fans a great story and gameplay, but one of the best parts of playing is how Hazelight Studios puts its fans first.

Hazelight Studios’ Next Game Could Be 3-Player Co-Op

Josef Fares recently shared an image of himself during a motion capture session of what is presumably Hazelight's next game. In the behind-the-scenes photo, he can be seen hiding the faces of three artists, who many think could be the main protagonists. This has fans wondering if the upcoming IP will be a three-player co-op and not just a two-player adventure. Hazelight Studios has replied to the post by jokingly saying, "Now with Strategic Arm Placement Tech" as Fares uses his arm to hide the faces of the people behind him. The studio has also mentioned that it is cooking something delicious this time, suggesting that the upcoming game might include some unexpected features and mechanics.

Though the exact details of the next Hazelight project haven't been revealed yet, the developer seems intent on making sure that its next game surpasses the previous ones in gameplay and innovation. Even It Takes Two was outperformed by Split Fiction in sales. The company has become well known for its unique approach to video games, creating only co-op experiences. For example, It Takes Two was all about repairing relationships, while 2018's A Way Out taught the necessity of partnership. And if the Twitter post is any indication, the developer may be upping the ante with its next game by adding a potential third player into the mix.

A key thing that will most likely be missing from the upcoming Hazelight game will be microtransactions, as founder Josef Fares has stated that none of Hazelight's games will ever feature microtransactions. What is certain is that fans, new and old, are eagerly awaiting what the development studio has planned next. The success of It Takes Two, Split Fiction, and A Way Out has set a very high bar.
