HBO’s all-new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has made massive strides throughout March, with new cast announcements, a confirmed premiere window, and the release of a first trailer. All of this is unfolding at an unprecedented scale, even as the franchise navigates the controversies surrounding the author of the Harry Potter book series, J.K. Rowling.

While Rowling’s legacy remains well-preserved in the beloved books and movies, it cannot be denied that her reputation continues to cast a shadow over the franchise. Recently, a key cast member revealed that he almost reconsidered attaching himself to the upcoming Harry Potter series, highlighting the criticism surrounding Rowling’s views.

The New Dumbledore Almost Backed Out Of The Harry Potter Series

Veteran actor John Lithgow, who is set to play Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, has continued to address the nature of his casting. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Lithgow addressed the debate surrounding his being on board the all-new Harry Potter series, clarifying that he has never met Rowling and does not agree with the author’s views on gender issues, but believes the Harry Potter saga itself is "clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry."

Lithgow’s latest projects include Jimpa, the Sophie Hyde film, in which he plays Jim, a gay grandfather to a trans teen, Frances, who is portrayed by the director’s own child. His co-star, Aud Mason-Hyde, told Out magazine that Lithgow was "such a beautiful human to make work with." However, Mason-Hyde did express his concerns with Lithgow’s association, even indirectly, with Rowling. The young actor said:

It was definitely a difficult moment in time. I don't think it's worth speaking to John's reasoning by any means, but I do also think that it's a strange decision, for sure. And also I found it disconcerting, maybe, is the right word.

Adding to that, director Sophie Hyde revealed that she had contacted Lithgow about his attachment to the series, saying:

It's a very difficult thing. As soon as I heard about Harry Potter, for sure, I contacted John and expressed my feelings about it. Not that J.K. Rowling has opinions, which is one thing, but that she has a very vocal platform and she's funding a very, very harmful legal battle against trans people and that funding is doing a great deal of harm.

Lithgow Says Dumbledore's Role Was A Hard Decision

Per Variety, Lithgow defended his association with the Harry Potter series at Jimpa’s screening at the Rotterdam Film Festival, noting:

I take the subject extremely seriously. She has created this amazing canon for young people, and it has jumped into the consciousness of the society. It’s about good versus evil, kindness versus cruelty. I find her view ironic and inexplicable. I’ve never met her, she’s not really involved in this production at all. But the people who are, are remarkable.

In the same interview, the actor revealed that few had urged him to walk away from the project, but he ultimately chose to stay, added: "It upsets me when people are opposed to me having anything to do with this. But in Potter canon, you see no trace of transphobic sentiment. She’s written this meditation on kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role."

Lithgow isn’t the only star to criticize Rowling’s views. Per IndieWire, in 2025, Snape actor Paapa Essiedu joined actors and filmmakers such as Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) in signing an open letter calling for industry action to protect trans rights, following the U.K. Supreme Court ruling “that the legal definition of women is based on biological sex” (Per BBC).

By interpreting Harry Potter through the lens of good versus evil and kindness versus cruelty, Lithgow reinforces one of the core themes of the franchise. The story explores deep-rooted biases, such as pure-blood supremacy, while challenging characters like Draco Malfoy, who are shaped by rigid belief systems. The books themselves are a critique of discrimination, from the treatment of house elves like Dobby, to prejudice against those with non-magical parents, such as Hermione Granger, and on the other side, resistance from working-class families, such as the Dursleys towards the Wizarding World.

HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Moves Ahead Amid Controversy

Despite the lingering association with Rowling, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot has gained significant momentum. The release window, earlier set at "early 2027" by the Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, Casey Bloys, in an interview with Deadline, has since been moved up to Christmas 2026. Season 1 is billed as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in line with the original U.K. book title. It will premiere on Christmas 2026 on HBO, with streaming available on HBO Max in regions including Germany, Italy, and the UK & Ireland.

Per a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery, the logline reads:

There is nothing special about Harry Potter — at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past.

The lead cast of HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone includes Dominic McLaughlin as the titular lead, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The Hogwarts ensemble features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
