Take-Two Interactive has shed some light on why Rockstar Games is premiering its next Grand Theft Auto 6 preview on Netflix before releasing it elsewhere, saying the streaming service offers both an event-style presentation and access to a significantly broader audience than it would typically be able to target. The unusual arrangement could help amplify GTA 6's high-profile launch.
Rockstar announced on August 6 that GTA 6 will receive an extended look on August 27. Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the presentation starting at 3 p.m. EDT, whereas Rockstar will upload it to its YouTube channel exactly six hours later, at 9 p.m. EDT. Both Netflix and Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive described the arrangement as a first-of-its-kind partnership in subsequent statements.
Take-Two Says There Is a Reason Behind the Netflix GTA 6 Agreement
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier discussed the reasoning behind the Netflix deal in an August 7 video following an interview with Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Zelnick declined to disclose the financial terms of the agreement, including even its very basic premise: whether Netflix paid Take-Two or vice versa. However, he was much more talkative when Schreier asked whether the streaming platform offered benefits beyond any monetary arrangement. The executive responded affirmatively, saying there was a rationale behind the decision and suggested it would become clearer once fans watched the temporarily Netflix-exclusive GTA 6 presentation on August 27.

Zelnick's comments point to two main reasons for the GTA 6 Netflix partnership: reach and presentation. He agreed with Schreier's characterization that the extended look would feel more like a Netflix show than a traditional game preview, though exactly what that means remains unclear. Separately, Schreier argued that concentrating viewers on one platform for several hours could make the presentation feel more like a scheduled entertainment event while simultaneously reaching Netflix users who do not closely follow Rockstar's channels. Netflix has echoed that rationale, with Vice President Brandon Riegg saying the company wants ambitious storytelling across different media to reach the "biggest possible audience" on its service.
GTA 6 Launch Campaign Can't Stop Surprising
For Better or Worse
The Netflix arrangement continues a pattern of unconventional decisions surrounding the GTA 6 launch campaign. These include Rockstar's decision not to sell a physical version of the game on day one. While the Standard Edition of GTA 6 will technically be available in a boxed package, it will contain only a download code rather than a disc.
It remains unclear whether a disc version is planned for after launch. Despite recent reports citing individual conversations with Rockstar customer support, the company has not confirmed that a disc-based edition of GTA 6 will be released in the future. The window for a PlayStation disc release will also be relatively narrow due to Sony's recently announced policy change: starting in January 2028, SIE is ending physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles, while titles that received disc releases before then will remain unaffected. Which of those two groups GTA 6 ultimately falls into remains to be seen.
