The Vanished Warder is an early Gothic 1 Remake quest that sends players to find Nek, a missing Old Camp guard. Finding Nek can be a bit tricky, though, especially since players may not have a map at this point in the game. Fortunately, he is not far from the Old Camp, and you can reach him by passing through the south exit near Mordrag.

This guide explains where to start The Vanished Warder in Gothic 1 Remake, where to find Fletcher, Guy, Snaf, and Nek, and whether players should give the Amulet of the Dead Guard to Sly or keep it for themselves.

How to Start the Vanished Warder in Gothic 1 Remake

To start The Vanished Warder, you must speak with Sly in the Old Camp. From the entrance to the Old Camp, follow the ramp to the right. Sly is sitting on a bench on the right side of this path, just past Bloodwyn.

When you find Sly, talk to him to start The Vanished Warder quest.

Where to Find Fletcher

After speaking with Sly, return to the entrance of the Old Camp and follow the path to the left. Pass Snaf, the cook near the large pot, and stay left at the fork to reach the upper arena area.

Fletcher can be found in this area, and he has a crossbow on his back. Speak with him about Nek to advance to the next part of the quest, which centers around talking to Guy.

There is a house with a red awning in the upper arena area with a bed that you can use to sleep and pass the time. Do that if you aren't finding the NPCs you need.

Where to Find Guy

Guy can also be found in the upper arena area, not far from Fletcher. He has a pickaxe on his back, and you can often find him cheering above the arena. When you locate Guy, speak with him about Nek.

Talk to Snaf About Nek

Snaf location near the cooking pot in the Old Camp

After speaking with Fletcher and Guy, backtrack to Snaf near the large cooking pot, and ask him about the person he sent out to look for mushrooms. If you already discussed this with Snaf during an earlier conversation, this step will already be complete, and you're ready to find Nek.

Where to Find Nek Without a Map

To find Nek, start from Snaf and follow the path behind him once again. This time, go right at the fork to follow the lower path, and continue forward until you see Mordrag sitting on a bench near a building with a red awning.

When you reach Mordrag, look left to find the south exit from the Old Camp. Leave through that exit, then head forward and slightly right to find a cave blocked by three Molerats. Nek's body is inside that cave.

Before you approach the cave and attempt to loot Nek's corpse, heal to full with any berries, meat, or other food items you have available, and make a quick save.

How to Get Past the Molerats

If you've followed our Best Start guide, you'll have access to an Old Sword and Shortbow, which are enough to defeat the Molerats if you're careful. Start by using your bow to bring down two of the enemies before they reach you, and then switch to your sword to beat the last one with melee attacks.

Check our Best Early Weapons guide if you need help getting equipped.

If you don't have those items, or the fight is simply proving to be too difficult, you can also run past the Molerats, loot Nek's body quickly, and escape. Wait for the creatures to move to one side of the entrance, sprint past them on the open side, interact with the corpse on the ground, and quickly hit loot all before fleeing back to the Old Camp.

If you've picked up Mud during your time in the Old Camp, he can actually serve as a useful distraction here. Indeed, the Molerats can focus on attacking him when he gets close to them, and you can use that as an opening to enter the cave and loot Nek's body. This is one reason not to get rid of Mud as soon as you meet him.

Should You Give the Amulet of the Dead Guard to Sly?

Amulet of the Dead Guard stats in Gothic 1 Remake

One of the items you'll grab from Nek's body is the Amulet of the Dead Guard, a wearable that grants +5 Edge and +5 Blunt and is used to complete The Vanished Warder. If you're really struggling to survive, you could consider wearing the amulet temporarily, only giving it to Sly and completing the quest once you've got your bearings.

However, handing over the amulet leads to 250 XP and progress toward joining the Old Camp. If you're trying to level up or focusing on completing Casting Shadows, it is therefore recommended that you pass the item along straightaway.

How to Complete The Vanished Warder

As noted, you can complete The Vanished Warder by returning to Sly in the Old Camp, telling him that Nek is dead, and giving him the Amulet of the Dead Guard. The XP that doing so leads to can be very helpful at the beginning of the game, and it is recommended that players make completing The Vanished Warder an early-game priority.
