Ulbert's Storage Shed is a quest in Gothic 1 Remake that sends players to find Aleph and recover the key that opens the chest Ulbert is guarding in the Old Mine. The trickiest parts of the quest are locating Aleph and knowing how much to pay him, as giving him 50 nuggets instead of 30 gets you an extra Ring of Power.
This guide explains how to start Ulbert's Storage Shed in Gothic 1 Remake, where to find Aleph, how much you should pay him, and what is inside the chests that the key opens.

How to Start Ulbert's Storage Shed in Gothic 1 Remake
Before you try to start the Ulbert's Storage Shed quest, make sure you have some wine or beer in your possession, as you'll need it to get information from Ulbert. While you can find alcohol next to carts and crates along the roads, you can buy some from Dexter, an NPC who is typically found near a well inside the Old Camp, if necessary.
Once you have some wine or beer, you need to reach the Old Mine, an area northwest of the Old Camp. The easiest way to find the Old Mine is to buy a Colony Map from Graham in the Old Camp and make your way to the position marked on the map above. For more on maps, see our How to Get a Map in Gothic 1 Remake guide.
It's recommended that you accept the Test of Faith quest from Diego in the Old Camp before heading to the Old Mine, as that quest centers around speaking with Ian at that location. Additionally, you can have Graham mark the exact position of the Old Mine on your map once you start Test of Faith, though it does cost some ore.
If you're trying to reach the Old Mine without a map, exit through the Old Camp's north gate and cross the small bridge. Then follow the road that moves forward and to your left. Notably, you'll encounter some Wolves along this path, and you should be able to defeat them if you've followed our Best Start guide.
Once you reach the Old Mine, follow the wooden plank paths downward. This will lead you to a ladder, and you'll find Ulbert standing in front of a shed at the bottom. Talk to him and give him a drink to start the Ulbert's Storage Shed quest and get your first objective: find Aleph.
Where to Find Aleph in Gothic 1 Remake
Aleph is not far from Ulbert. Follow these steps to reach him:
- Climb the ladder you descended to reach Ulbert.
- Follow the wooden plank path upward until you reach a fork.
- Go left at the fork, and follow the path past a ladder that leads up to the area with Santino.
- Climb the ladder at the end of the path, and head downward until you reach the miners.
- Look for a tall wooden structure in this area. Aleph is sitting next to it.
Aleph will automatically initiate a conversation when you approach him.
How Much Should You Pay Aleph?
Question Aleph about the key, and he'll reveal that he's willing to provide information in exchange for ore. You now must choose how many nuggets to give, and here are the outcomes associated with each choice:
- Give 15 nuggets: Aleph says his memory is foggy, and you must pick again.
- Give 30 nuggets: Aleph gives you the chest key.
- Give 50 nuggets: Aleph gives you the chest key and a Ring of Power.
You should pay Aleph 50 nuggets if you can afford it. While 30 nuggets gets you the chest key and is enough to complete Ulbert's Storage Shed, paying 50 nuggets gets you the key and the Ring of Power. If you're short on ore, check our How to Make Ore in Gothic 1 Remake guide.
What Does the Ring of Power Do?
The Ring of Power grants +5 Strength when equipped, giving a nice boost to melee combat. This ring is especially helpful in the early game, and the 20 additional nuggets that Aleph asks for are a small price to pay.
How to Get Ulbert Away From the Shed
After getting the key from Aleph, return to Ulbert and tell him that Ian sent you. This will complete the Ulbert's Storage Shed quest, and you can now freely loot the chest inside the shed.
Make a quicksave before opening the chest, just in case anything goes wrong while you're looting it.
What's Inside Ulbert's Storage Shed?
You'll find the following items inside the chest Ulbert was guarding:
- 5x Torch
- 2x Iron
- 2x Light Scroll
However, there is actually a second chest that can be opened with the key, and it is just behind the shed. Pass through the opening to the right of the shed to find this chest, and open it to claim the following items:
- 1x Gold
- 3x Ham
- 3x Bread
- 4x Beer
- 7x Apple
