Every good Metroidvania has a double jump ability, and God of War: Sons of Sparta is no different. Nike's Victory Sandals will have Kratos sprinting at godly speeds and leaping like an Olympian, but it isn't until later that you gain some serious height in your step. You've likely spotted some ledges that you just can't seem to reach, and that's where the Celestial Step ability comes into play.
But when do you actually unlock double jumping? This God of War: Sons of Sparta guide will lead the way, earning you the Celestial Step upgrade and granting you with platforming's most coveted movement ability.
Why God of War: Sons of Sparta's Kratos Has 'We Have Kratos at Home' Vibes
Kratos looks different in God of War: Sons of Sparta, but the backlash may say more about fan expectation than the design itself.
How to Unlock Double Jump (Celestial Step) in God of War: Sons of Sparta
Climbing Mount Taygetos
Celestial Step is unlocked a bit later into God of War: Sons of Sparta, after you've climbed Mount Taygetos and defeated the second Stymphalian boss, Ponea. As such, you'll need to have already visited several zones and acquired various Gifts from the Gods, including the Victory Sandals from the Temple of Nike.
Once you've obtained the Spartan Xyele (knives) from The Krypteia, you're officially ready to make your ascent toward Mount Taygetos. If you haven't acquired the Spartan Xyele yet, continue following the main story objectives until you reach this point.
Mount Taygetos contains an assortment of deadly foes and just as many twists and turns, making it easy to get lost at times. However, as long as you follow the main quest marker on your map, you shouldn't have too much trouble. Before reaching Ponea, you'll enter a cave with a screeching Gryphon bound by chains. After freeing her, continue to the right.
Eventually, you'll reach Ponea, the second Stymphalian boss. Similar to the Alastor boss fight, Ponea unleashes an array of full-screen projectile attacks and will require constant evading to survive. Succeed, and you'll be rescued by the Gryphon, who will fly Kratos and Deimos to a new area of the Laconian Woods.
Explore the Laconian Woods
After landing in the Laconian Woods and having a brief discussion with Deimos, you'll need to climb down the ladder into the next room. Continue dropping off various ledges and battling your way through the enemies until Kratos and Deimos hear a noise emitting from the Lycurgus bust.
Once the pair splits up, continue right into the next room. Head to the right side of the room and climb the ladder to reach the altar containing the Celestial Step blessing. To double jump, simply press the jump button (X) while already in mid-air.
With a little finesse, double jumping can be used to quickly scale climbable walls and ladders. Try jumping off a tall, climbable wall and then quickly jumping back toward it.
Where Should You Go After Unlocking Double Jump in God of War: Sons of Sparta?
Once you've obtained the Celestial Step blessing and unlocked double jumping, plenty of new ledges and areas will become accessible. You'll likely want to start backtracking to all the places you've been before. However, your first priority should be to continue further down the Laconian Woods and toward the Temple of Artemis.
The Temple of Artemis contains your next major Gift of the Gods, the Lunar Blade. This ability, in addition to slicing enemies apart, will enable Kratos to shove specific pillars left and right, exposing new pathways to explore.
After obtaining the Lunar Blade, continue to the right and into the Passage of Monuments. This region will lead you to the next step of your main quest, as well as provide a quick pathway back to Sparta.
If you haven't done so yet, now's the perfect time to upgrade your Solar Sling with the Ray of Light ability so you can break through bars and other obstacles.
