God of War Laufey, Explained: Who Is Faye?

God of War Laufey is Santa Monica Studio's next God of War game, and it's a spinoff set during the events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. As seen in the trailer, Laufey is a fierce warrior, and her quest to return to Kratos and Atrues is of utmost importance.

While Kratos isn't the protagonist this time around, his story will still be essential, for the game follows that of his wife, Faye, who wakes in the Everywhen, an afterlife that crosses all pantheons. Who is Laufey in God of War?

Laufey is a Jotnar from Jotunheim, who is the mother of Atreus/Loki and wife to Kratos. Often referred to as 'Faye', she was respected across Midgard and the Norse Realms as a fierce warrior who would often stand for the oppressed against the tyranny of the Aesir Gods, like Odin and Thor.

Faye even fought Thor, as seen via the frozen lightning bolt in the ruins of Vanaheim in God of War Ragnarok!

Faye's story in the God of War series is born from tragedy, as our first introduction to her is during her funeral, where Kratos and Atreus are mourning her passing with her cremation. However, her death is not where her story ends, but seemingly, where it begins.

Faye's history in Midgard and the Norse Realms is chronicled through the people that Kratos and Atreus meet across their journey, and those who knew her spoke highly of her compassion, skills as a warrior, and wielder of the Leviathan Axe, which was made for her.

Faye's past, her ambitions, and goals are a complete mystery, and are still something that Kratos seeks in her death. However, God of War Laufey is bound to answer many questions, which we've posted below.

When Does God of War Laufey Take Place (& How Did She Die?)

Not much is actually known about Faye, and it's still unclear how Faye died, as God of War Laufey starts with her cremation, which also happens to be at the start of God of War (2018), which sets Kratos and Atreus off on their journey to scatter her ashes in Jotunheim.

With Kratos and Atreus off in the realms of the living to scatter Faye's ashes, Faye herself wakes in the Everywhen, which is an afterlife for all pantheons, not just the Norse Mythology. Within her waking moments in the Everywhen, Faye encounters Begtse, the Buddhist God of War, and Sekhmet, the Egyptian God of War. Yet, why these gods are dead, and what they are planning, remains a mystery.

Speaking of mysteries, Faye's past is begging to be explored. How she met Kratos, how she knew his prophecy as a god who would be loved and not feared, how she died, and where her story will take her in God of War Laufey, are all things that will surely be answered.

God of War Laufey Burning Questions, Explained

We expect plenty of questions to be answered in God of War Laufey, and here are just some of them from the tip of the iceberg:

• Who blew the horn to summon the World Serpent?
  • While Kratos and Mimir are busy saving Atreus, someone summons the World Serpent, and who that was remains a mystery. It may have been Faye who had returned to Midgard briefly.

• Which mask is Faye so afraid of, and is it another Mask of Creation, which Atreus and Odin dealt with in God of War Ragnarok?
  • Odin's desperation to seek knowledge sees him peer into the Mask of Creation to discover more about what's after death and how he was created. In the Everywhen, Faye seems fearful of this mask and is desperate to return to Kratos and Atreus in case there is "another" mask.

• What role will Kratos play in God of War Laufey?
  • Kratos has two cameo appearances, both in the opening, where he mourns Laufey, and in the Everywhen, when he helps her to her feet, yet he quickly disappears. Will he just be a strong memory, or will the Greek God of War find himself in the realm of the dead for his wife?

• Which gods will appear in God of War Laufey?
  • With Egyptian and Buddhist gods appearing, it's likely that more gods are in the Everywhen, and it's likely that we'll see some of Kratos' old victims during his Greek Pantheon genocide.

• Who is Phranque (Frank), and what is the sword?
  • Phranque (played by Jack Quaid) is Faye's new ally, and he seems to have a sword that even Begtse fears, so could this be from the Abrahamic religion, or something else?
