God of War Laufey, Explained: Who Is Faye?

God of War Laufey is set to follow Kratos' second wife, Faye, and her journey in the Everywhen. Here's what you need to know about her character.

Faye's Deadly Clash With Thor

Faye Fought Thor and Destroyed a Part of Vanaheim, Showcasing Her Secret Rage

God of War Ragnarok the crater region and lightning

Vanaheim is a beautiful realm, but it hides a dark secret. In the northern part of Vanaheim lies the Crater, a memorial site for a village lost to a drunken Thor and an enraged Faye, as this was the site in which the Aesir and the Jotnar clashed with Mjolnir and the Leviathan Axe.

While there is no one alive to recall their story but the ghosts who have yet to move on, there is still a frozen lightning bolt in the center of the crater. This is one of many secrets that Faye kept, and it turns out that she has her husband's temper, as the destruction in Vanaheim and the innocent lives lost here are something Kratos can relate to in his own tale of vengeance.

Faye's Prophetic Abilities Wove the Story of the End of the Aesir Gods

Faye's Secret Hand Guided Kratos and Atreus Through Their Story

Another great secret of Faye was that she had the incredible power of prophecy and foresight, thanks to the fact that she was a Jotnar from Jotunheim. With said prophecy, meant that she knew exactly what path Kratos and Atreus were on, and would take in her death.

The events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok are directly woven by Faye, even if Kratos and Atreus didn't even know it. Everything that happened was by design, from the specific trees cut down to destroy the protective stave, to the ashes spread in Jotunheim to reveal her true nature, and to the death of the Aesir like Odin.

Faye's prophecy comes true, and Kratos and Atreus did not know about it, or else they might have failed to make it come true had they known what they were supposed to do. As such, there's far more to Faye's story than she's letting on.

Faye and Kratos Almost Killed Each Other When They Met

Kratos Remembers Faye's Fighting Prowess as "Beautiful"

Love at first sight is a beautiful thing, but when it comes to Kratos and Faye, it's love at first fight. Faye and Kratos fought when they first met, with a clash of Blades of Chaos against the Leviathan Axe. However, their fight was a stalemate and only ended when they both proved they wanted to be more than this senseless violence.

Kraots and Faye proved that they were more than just bloodied tools of vengeance and rage, and instead decided to build a life together and share in each other's secrets and woes. Kratos even reminisces on how Faye fought, describing her work in battle as "beautiful", which is why she's such a cunning fighter in the Everywhen.

There are multiple gods expected to appear and clash with Faye in God of War Laufey, and here's everyone that's on the roster so far.

Faye COULD Be the Mother of All the Giants

Faye's Bloodline Could Go Back to the Ymir, the Original Jotunn

Kaptain Kuba and Morse_TheCode have a very interesting theory regarding Faye in "The Biggest Secret Laufey Hid From Kratos" on YouTube (click the link to watch it for yourself!) Kuba and Morse detail a prophecy in God of War (2018) that depicts Bergelmir and Nal surviving Odin's purge and bringing forth a new generation of frost giants.

What's interesting is the fact that Faye's other secret Jotunn name isn't just Laufey, but also Nal. This could mean that Faye is far older than we thought, and that her importance in Jotunheim is more than just that of a giant in exile forced to live in Midgard. This could also explain why she's in the Everywhen, as she holds a great secret as the descendant of Ymir.

Faye is the Reason the Giants Disappeared

The Guardian and Golden Hand of the Jotnar Has a Special Relationship with Tyr

God of War Carrying Faye's Corpse

Faye is referred to as the Jotunn as "The Guardian" and the "Golden hand of the Jotnarr", not only for her incredible abilities with magic, but for how she will one day bring the giants back to safety (aided in prophecy by Kratos and Atreus). Faye mastered the ability to take souls and place them into objects, which became the perfect tool to hide surviving Jotunn from Odin.

This ability was learned by Faye's son, Atreus/Loki, and could be used to help find the remaining giants and bring them back to the Nine Realms. It's a secret ability that Faye took to her grave, but it's one of vital importance, and showed how she managed to evade Odin's wrath with Tyr's help for decades.

The Leviathan Axe is Faye's Weapon

Brok and Sindri Crafted the Leviathan Axe for Faye to Counter Mjolnir

A still from the God of War Ragnarok "Official Story Trailer" shared during the September 2022 State of Play broadcast. The image shows a medium close-up of Kratos holding the Leviathan Axe in a dimly lit room.

Mjolnir was once Brok and Sindri's finest weapon. That was, until Thor wielded it for genocide. Plagued with guilt and regret for the unstoppable weapon that they had created, newfound hope was forged when they met Faye and gifted her the Leviathan Axe to rival the power of Mjolnir.

While the Leviathan Axe has been a weapon wielded by Kratos across God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, it's a weapon that holds strong loving emotion and grief, unlike the unable-to-be-discarded Blades of Chaos. Whereas Kratos reviles the Blades, he wields the Leviathan Axe with adoration, knowing it was the weapon of his fallen love.
