What started as a novel, A Game of Thrones, grew into so much more. Game of Thrones is a television series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels. Author George R. R. Martin was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's works, which is what fueled his passion for writing the story. Throughout the television series, there is an existential feeling of sorrow. Fans love characters like Jon Snow and Arya Stark, and the fact that no character was safe from being killed off at any moment was nerve-wracking.

Many games might play on the player's emotions, but they all contain engrossing gameplay. If players love the political intrigue and fantasy elements present in A Song of Ice and Fire, then they'll be pleased to know that there are more than enough titles that let players enjoy these complex dynamics with ease. The fact that these games encompass a wealth of genres means that players with varying tastes who want to check out games like Game of Thrones will find something that aligns with their interests!

Updated on February 17, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Game of Thrones' prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is currently airing its first season, and it is going over very well. If you cannot get enough of Westeros or similar worlds, you might want to check out a few games similar to GoT, especially since the franchise's gaming output is mostly lacking.

There are not all that many Game of Thrones games, and a few of the bigger releases are not all that great. However, Reigns: Game of Thrones is a fun little title set within the universe and, arguably, one of the better uses of the license by the gaming industry. Reigns utilizes the Tinder swiping mechanic to let players make complex political decisions, with this simple yet harrowing political simulator doing a great job of conveying just how hard it would be to serve as a fair and just ruler without letting things go out of control. This title spawned a series, including a Game of Thrones spinoff that utilizes the same formula.

Reigns: Game of Thrones lets players control one of the many distinguished figures in the series as they make decisions relevant to their scenarios. This game shows just how tense a single swipe can be, even if the formula gets repetitive after a point. Thankfully, players will be able to sink a ton of hours into this game before they reach this point of exhaustion, if they ever do.

Despite failing to meet the grand promises set by Peter Molyneux, Fable was still one of the best high fantasy games released during the 2000s. Sure, some elements are a bit cliché or frustrating, but the charming world coupled with some dark moments that come out of nowhere give this title the unique edge it needs to stand out.

The combat is pretty engaging, and the exploration takes some cues from titles like Ocarina of Time. Exploring the world and uncovering numerous sidequests to complete makes for a great time and does an excellent job of lending a sense of scale to this world. People who want to check out action-packed games like Game of Thrones with a similar fantasy vibe will find a lot to love about Fable.

Fable 2 and 3 are also worth mentioning, and the last one even lets you become a ruler. However, the original Fable is the closest to GoT in terms of tone (and it isn't that close).

Obsidian Entertainment was on the brink of bankruptcy when they decided to use crowdsourcing as a means to fund a new CRPG game. This led to the rise of Pillars of Eternity, which wowed players with its deep lore, excellent worldbuilding, fun characters, and great real-time with a pause combat system that promoted a strategic approach without being too unapproachable.

The corruption of the gods and the abuse of power by the higher-ups is something that will be right up the alley of Game of Thrones fans. The second game may feature better gameplay mechanics, but the first entry has a more memorable narrative and really lets players take on an active role in deciding how the Hollowborn crisis is averted.

One thing Game of Thrones does well is show the gray side of morality instead of looking at extremes. Evil and good come with their caveats in this show, and the same can be said for Tyranny, one of the darker and more mature RPGs of the 2010s.

Players who want to play an evil character without being forced into being a goody-two-shoes protagonist will love what this game brings to the table. It's a unique CRPG in every way, and fans can only hope for what could have been if this game had managed to realize its full vision.

There's a reason why so many people felt like the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series elicited a lot of what made Game of Thrones so special. While retaining that Final Fantasy flair, the story adopts a darker and more mature tone, with political turmoil revolving around warring nations taking center stage. Clive, the protagonist, is even kind of reminiscent of Jon Snow.

Final Fantasy 16 mostly does its own thing, but it takes inspiration from Westeros' political climate and a few character archetypes, along with delivering a world that is relatively similar to GoT's nations. Out of every game like GoT in this article, Final Fantasy 16 arguably comes the closest, except for titles that are actually part of the franchise.

It's a shame that the entire story is barricaded by DLCs, but that's a small price to pay for a video game where the only true fault is its main fault is poor side quest implementation. Fetch quests should be a thing of the past and feel like unnecessary padding in this title.

Telltale and Game of Thrones seem like a match made in heaven on paper. While the execution did not quite reach the heights seen by the source material or the developer's greatest games, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series is still a worthy expansion to the core narrative.

It is a Game of Thrones story that focuses on House Forrester, a family not featured in the television series but discussed in A Dance with Dragons. George R. R. Martin did not write this story, but players might enjoy it anyway for its references to Game of Thrones. The reviews for the game are mixed, but that won't stop staunch supporters from loving this customizable experience.

Still, we are talking about projects that might scratch a similar itch to Game of Thrones, and Baldur's Gate 3's scope and writing are more than a match for the TV show. Although set in a more traditional fantasy realm than Westeros, BG3 maintains a relatively grounded tone and also explores its world's politics, casting a negative light similar to GoT.

Well, we might as well pair the most popular fantasy game with the most popular fantasy TV show. Serendipitous as that might be, Skyrim's similarities to Game of Thrones go beyond just their cultural footprint, as they have quite a bit of overlap. Obviously, both universes prominently feature dragons, and they handle them in comparable ways by using them as symbols and instruments of power rather than just monsters. Civil war has torn Skyrim apart, leaving behind a world that is fractured by ideological differences and political instability.

Skyrim utilizes a faction system to explore the setting's current power struggle, diving into different groups with established agendas and a desire to utilize the Dragonborn as a tool. Even their Medieval-style worlds are pretty similar, although Skyrim leans a bit more into fantasy than Game of Thrones.
