The world of Westeros is expanding once again, this time on the big screens, thanks to Warner Bros.' confirmation of a Game of Thrones prequel movie at CinemaCon 2026. The upcoming movie, which is titled Aegon's Conquest, marks a major milestone for the fantasy franchise; unlike planned spinoffs and prequel series like House of the Dragon, Aegon's Conquest is making a bold cinematic leap.

This switch to the silver screen means a large-scale retelling of one of the most important events in George RR Martin's lore. With Beau Williamson writing the screenplay, Aegon's Conquest will likely benefit from Williamson's experience with political intrigue and character-driven storytelling thanks to his work on Andor and House of Cards. Casting and behind-the-scenes roles are still under wraps, but fans know for sure that Aegon's Conquest is already in the works.

Game Of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, Explained

Reported to be HBO's next George R.R. Martin adaptation, Aegon's Conquest is a pivotal event in Game of Thrones lore.

Aegon's Conquest is a Pivotal Moment in Westeros

Set roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Aegon's conquest details the violent campaign that brought most of Westeros together under the Targaryen rule. Drawing from RR Martin's Fire & Blood novel, Aegon I Targaryen is placed front and center, accompanied by Visenya and Rhaenys, as they wage war across the continent with their three dragons (Vhagar, Balerion, and Meraxes).

In the source material, Aegon was the first leader to unite six of the seven kingdoms in Westeros, which he accomplished in only two years, and was the first king of the Targaryen dynasty. After invading Westeros from Dragonshire, Aegon used his enemies' swords and dragon fire to forge the Iron Throne, which is a crucial part of the Game of Thrones universe.

Warner Bros.' Announcement Confirms Long-Time Rumors

The announcement at CinemaCon finally confirms some long-standing rumors that a Game of Thrones movie would be coming to the big screen, but this is the first time the studio has confirmed the reports. Originally, fans thought Aegon's conquest would be brought to the screen in the form of an HBO series, but instead, viewers will be treated to a "mammoth Dune-sized feature film."

With Warner Bros. naming Aegon's Conquest on its "2027 and beyond" slate, it won't be long until fans finally receive an adaptation that will further expand the history behind House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
