The Season 2 finale of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was a hard pill to swallow. Leading up to the long-awaited return of the anime adaptation, fans were already frustrated that it would be only 10 episodes, compared to its lengthy 28-episode first season. That's not to say that the content was lacking in any sense, with Season 2 catapulting to the top of MAL's highest rated anime listing, beating out the first season for the coveted spot. Speaking with fans and scrolling through social media highlights a clear lack of any negative chatter about the Madhouse series, which has wowed audiences with its poignant storytelling, masterful music, and fluid animation. Its finale, which aired on March 27, was bittersweet, though a promising future lies ahead.
Immediately following Episode 10, it was announced that Frieren Season 3 is on the way, though fans have quite the wait ahead of them before diving more deeply into the coveted Golden Land Arc. The stage has been set for the arrival of one of the most popular villains in the manga, with Frieren, Stark, and Fern soon about to face off against one of their most dangerous demon opponents yet. For now, however, audiences have been left to process where the series has left off, hearts heavy and expectations high for Fall 2027. It was an episode worthy of high marks, as were all that came before, but one line in particular stood out to viewers and proved that Frieren deserves its high praise, despite—or, perhaps, because of—its abundance of quieter moments.

The Future of Frieren Is ‘A Beautiful Sight’ Indeed
A Largely Gentle End to a Stunning Season
Prior to the premiere of Season 2, fans were under the impression that it would cover both the Divine Revolte Arc and The Golden Land Arc, given the decent length of the show's first season. This hope was quickly dashed when its 10-episode run was confirmed, though Frieren Episode 9 officially marked the firm beginning of the group's eventual dealings with Macht, the strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction and the wildly memorable villain of the manga's esteemed Golden Land Arc. The character only appeared on-screen for a brief moment, but it was enough to make an impression, along with allusions to Denken's homeland and the incredible dangers that await our heroes in the episodes to come. Indeed, the older first-class mage marked the end of Episode 10 with a pledge to maintain the protective barrier around the Golden Land in a cliffhanger worthy of such a powerful season.
Upon reaching the Great Tor Canyon, the group meets the dwarf Gehen, who has finally completed his bridge after two centuries of years of hard work. Unfortunately, giant bird monsters make passage wildly unsafe, but Frieren and friends agree to take on the beasts in exchange for (you guessed it) a worthless spellbook that ensures the user will flip pancakes perfectly. Stark wonders why someone would spend centuries crafting a bridge, and the answer is par for the course in this series: Gehen's village had been destroyed by demons in the past, and nearby soldiers were unable to reach it in time due to a lack of passage across the canyon. Time is well spent in service of others, as well as in their memory, as the elven mage herself would likely attest.

Money is tight for the adventurers, but a quick detour allows them to earn some extra funds by seeking out valuable Holy Snow Crystals and defeating a powerful wolf-like monster to boot, with impressive animation to show for it. As the morning sun crests the mountains, the ice is illuminated, and Frieren recalls sharing the same view with the Hero Party centuries earlier. Himmel concludes that defeating the Demon King, a dangerous quest only fools would attempt, would alone be worth it to preserve such beautiful scenery for future generations. Time marches on, but actions taken today can reverberate far into the future, no matter how small. The Frieren Season 2 finale, fittingly titled 'A Beautiful Sight,' expertly set fans up for its epic continuation next year, with the elf's longtime apprentice Fern uttering what may have been the most poignant line in the series to date.
Frieren or: How an Elf Learned to Stop Deflecting and Learned to Love Humanity
A Single Sentence Spoken by Fern Drove Season 2 Home
There's no denying that, while Frieren is the titular protagonist of the series, the influence of Himmel the Hero can be felt in each and every episode and manga panel. Even in the real world, Himmel's deeds have inspired courage in the most unlikely of people. In June 2024, a Taiwanese man helped to stop a knife attack on a train, later saying, "It's what the hero Himmel would have done" as the explanation for his incredible deed. In the moment, it can be difficult to see how we're impacting those around us, and in some ways, we may never know. During the finale's conclusion, Stark notes that, despite confessing that he had run from his village years ago, Fern had never judged him, instead taking the time to encourage him at every turn. When asked why this was, the purple-haired first-class mage turned the traditional Himmel the Hero quote around, instead giving credit to the Hero Party's mage.
Because that's what Ms. Frieren would do. - Fern
We're able to see Frieren smile, whine, and pout, but raw and painful displays of emotion are a rarity, only appearing when the elf stood beside Himmel's casket decades prior. Though she lamented not taking the time to know him better, Fern's quiet response to Stark proves that the white-haired mage knew the Hero more than she thought, internalizing many of his habits and quirks and putting them into practice on this new journey. She is now the model for the party, and when she finally reaches Ende and sees Himmel again, one can only wonder just how proud he'll be of his one true love. Change can sometimes happen so slowly that we don't even notice it, and in Frieren's case, her aloofness has largely given way, making room for the same tenderness Himmel displayed in every aspect of his life. One lesson to take away from Frieren is to simply be the change you want to see in the world.
Season 3 of the fantasy series will make its way to the small screen in October 2027, and while that's a long time to wait, it will give fans time to grow themselves. When we finally make our way to the Golden Land, will any of us be the same person we are at this very moment?
