The popularity of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End cannot be understated, and this summer, the titular character will appear at a Japanese art exhibition honoring a legendary Dutch painter. The second season of the Frieren anime adaptation wrapped in March, but the love fans have for the series as a whole hasn't waned in the time since, with Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's manga series still going strong and finding untold success around the world. From escape rooms and video game crossovers, the series continues to find new avenues to appease its ever-growing fandom, and this new collab may be the most unexpected yet.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2020. The series quickly became a phenomenon, thanks largely to its distinctive, leisurely narrative, comforting and familiar fantasy setting, and charming cast, all of which made its way to the small screen when Season 1 of the anime adaptation began in 2023. The manga has sold over 35 million copies to date and has snagged several Japanese honors, such as the Kodansha and Shogakukan manga awards. Currently, Frieren sits in the coveted top spot on MAL, boasting an overall score of 9.26.

From August 21 to September 27, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan will hold the "Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century" exhibition. To celebrate the event, this week, a collaborative Frieren illustration was posted online, showing Frieren herself as Johannes Vermeer's legendary masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring. "I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity for my work to be featured alongside the masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring," said Frieren story creator Kanehito Yamada. The manga's illustrator also chimed in, stating "Thank you very much for this tremendous opportunity. It was a remarkable experience viewing so many of Vermeer's works and creating my own pieces while learning from them." Crossover Frieren merchandise will be available during the exhibition, though details have yet to be announced.

Last week, it was confirmed that Frieren would have a panel during Anime Expo 2026. During the special event, which will take place on July 4, fans can look forward to hearing from series Director Tomoya Kitagawa, Supporting Director Keiichiro Saito, and Animation Producer Yuichiro Fukushi, as they share more about the highly anticipated third season. Season 3 is scheduled to release in October 2027, and it will cover the Golden Land Arc of the manga, a fan favorite. After a short 10-episode Season 2, many are hoping for more episodes when Frieren finally returns.

While the publishing schedule for the Frieren manga has not always been stable, fans remain dedicated to Yamada's work. The series went on hiatus several times between 2023 and 2024, and in October 2025, it was confirmed that the manga would enter indefinite hiatus. Both Yamada and Abe are currently focusing on their health while figuring out the serialization pace of Frieren's story going forward. No return window has yet been confirmed.
