This article has spoilers for the Frieren manga.
In the magical world of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, magic plays the most prominent role. It helps unite people, gives them a purpose, and even becomes the defining factor in many battles. Though accessible to everyone, magic is not the same for everyone. Exceptional mages, like Fern, work hard to become First-Class Mages.
But even First-Class Mages fall short when compared to Great Mages. Great Mages are a select few notable figures who have made tremendous contributions to magic. Their power and knowledge are far greater than those of others, and they are some of the strongest characters in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End yet. Let's have a look at each of them and see how they rank against each other.
5 Strongest Elves in Frieren, Ranked
Elves are extinct in Frieren, yet their kind has no shortage of incredibly powerful elven mages.
4 Minus
Minus is an elven mage who is briefly talked about in the 133rd chapter of the Frieren manga. According to the members of the Shadow Warriors, she was a great mage who caused multiple wars in the Southern Lands. This made her guilty of high treason, and she was later defeated by an unknown warrior who is said to be Lowe. Very little is known about her, but with the wars she caused, it is evident that she was quite powerful. Being an elf, she may have been on a similar level or even stronger than Frieren, but without evidence, it feels fitting to have her at the bottom of the list.
3 Flamme
The Legendary Mage Flamme is greatly responsible for humanity's progress in learning magic. According to Serie, she truly loved magic and wanted it to be accessible to everyone. Hence, at a time when magic was frowned upon and considered a killing tool used by demons, she encouraged the emperor to allow its use and study. She also helped train the Imperial Mages, who have become a key magical force in the present day. It was mainly because of Flamme’s contributions that humanity was able to adopt magic and eventually fight against the Demon Lord’s forces.
As one of Serie’s students, Flamme was undoubtedly an exceptional mage. The barriers she cast thousands of years ago stand strong till modern day. She was also Frieren’s mentor and taught her the importance of suppressing one's mana. Suppressing their mana allowed them to trick demons into underestimating them and giving them a slight advantage. She is easily the most important human mage in history.

2 Frieren
Widely recognized as the mage who accompanied the Hero Party and helped defeat the Demon Lord, Frieren is an elf mage with thousands of years of experience. She has notably slain more demons than anyone else in history, giving her the title "Frieren the Slayer". She was mentored by humanity's finest mage, Flamme, who taught her mana concealment, which she used to defeat formidable foes like Aura the Guillotine.
Frieren is an exceptionally skilled mage, but according to Serie, she is miles away from her true potential. Her hobby of collecting spells has given her access to all sorts of spells. Most of them are useless in combat, but she also has access to some powerful spells. Notably, while fighting against her clone, we see her cast spells that were immensely powerful. Her clone was also able to cast a spell so powerful that Fern was unable to register it as an attack, yet it injured her severely and broke her staff. Fern called it "The Height of Magic".
Frieren's passion for magic also allowed her to analyze dangerous spells and contribute to the growth of humanity's magic system. She analyzed Zoltraak and turned it into an ordinary offensive spell that is widely used by mages of the modern day. Despite her easy-going nature, Frieren still has spells, mana, and skills far greater than most people.
1 Serie
Also known as the Living Grimoire, Serie is famous for possibly knowing every spell that has ever been written in humanity's history. She not only knows an infinite number of spells but also has the power to transfer them to others. Like Frieren, she is an elf who has lived for over a thousand years and has mentored exceptional mages such as Flamme and Lernen.
Her mastery of magic and instinct is second to none. During the second stage of the First-Class Mage exam, she created a barrier that was said to be unbreakable and was only destroyed by Frieren after a day's analysis. She also instantly saw through Land’s several clones, which were previously undetected by anyone. Her instinct is even praised by Frieren, who considers it to be “always right”.
Serie also suppresses her mana, which was undetected by Lernen, who was able to see fluctuations in Frieren's mana. Fern was the only human who was able to see it. Also, Serie’s suppressed mana is about the same as Frieren's unsuppressed mana, showing that Serie is truly the strongest mage in the world.
The world of Frieren still has many untold stories. There is a constant connection between the past and present, which introduces us to newer characters or defines known characters better. As new chapters and episodes arrive, Frieren and Serie's strength will be better understood. Do you agree that Serie is the strongest great mage as of now?
