Friends is often praised as one of the most iconic sitcoms of the 21st century. While it may not hold up today in the same regard it did when it aired in the '90s, there's no denying that Friends-esque elements are visible in so many modern sitcoms. It perfected the friend group dynamic as viewers watched Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Joey, and Ross navigate their careers and love lives in their mid-20s. Of course, this premise lent itself very well to hilarious situations, and one particular funny storyline culminated in Season 5, Episode 14, "The One Where Everybody Finds Out."

Friends had only featured one in-group romance by Season 4, Rachel and Ross's infamously tumultuous relationship, but the Season 4 finale brought one more pairing to the forefront: Chandler and Monica. Though fans love "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" because it finally brings that storyline to a head, the episode also deserves recognition for marking another important milestone.

Why Is "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" So Memorable?

Like most Friends episodes, "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" has a simple premise: Chandler and Monica have been sneaking around since London, hiding their new relationship from their friends, but everything begins to unravel when Phoebe finally finds out. Only two Friends characters knew about their romance by this point: Joey figured out about their budding romance in Season 5, Episode 5, "The One With The Kips," after Monica and Chandler separately shared that they both saw Donald Trump in an elevator on their "work trip." Joey had, hilariously, spent the next 9 episodes covering for Monica and Chandler.

Rachel, on the other hand, had accidentally overheard Monica flirting with Chandler on the phone in "The One With All The Resolutions." However, when Phoebe goes to check out Ross' new apartment across the street, she looks out the window and witnesses Chandler and Monica undressing in Monica's apartment. Phoebe's reaction is one of her character's funniest sequences. She chaotically screeches the line, "My eyes!" while Rachel tries to calm her down and prevent Ross from overhearing anything more.

10 Funniest & Most Iconic Friends Quotes

Part of the reason Friends remains so memorable is the sitcom's immaculate writing, which stayed consistently strong for a decade.

This scene kickstarts the "they don't know that we know" game that lasts for the majority of the episode and culminates in Phoebe and Chandler playing a ridiculous game of chicken that results in the two of them kissing. Ultimately, though, Chandler admits to Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe that he's in love with Monica, but would prefer if Ross didn't find out just yet.

"The One Where Everybody Finds Out" is an exercise in physical comedy, and every character plays an important role in the episode's joke, from Monica's boxing coach-esque motivational words to Joey's complete confusion about who knows what. It's a memorable instalment for Monica and Chandler's love story, but the episode also breaks an important show-long trend.

The Episode Is Made Even Better Thanks To Friends' Best Long-Running Gag

Ugly Naked Guy and Ross in Season 5 of Friends

Though Friends is full of long-running jokes and memorable quotes, "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" quietly breaks a show-long trend. Since the pilot episode, the Friends characters have referred to, watched, and spoken about a mysterious character named "Ugly Naked Guy." Fans never see his face, learn his real name, or find out much more about him, other than he's a nudist who lives across the street from Monica and Rachel so is always visible from their window.

There are hardly any real interactions between the Friends gang and Ugly Naked Guy, though in Season 3, the gang fashions a large poking device when they suspect he may have died in his apartment. "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" is actually the first time any of the Friends characters have direct interaction with Ugly Naked Guy, when Ross meets with him and inquires about subletting his apartment. Ross turns up at his apartment, slow-claps him (presumably in reference to his nudist lifestyle), strips off his own clothes, and hangs out with Ugly Naked Guy.

10 Best Opening Credits In Sitcoms, Ranked

Watching a sitcom without getting tired or annoyed by its opening credits is rare, but not unachievable. Here are the best ones so far.

Eventually, Ross lands that apartment and lives opposite Monica and Rachel (and eventually Monica and Chandler) until the show's final episode. Incorporating Ugly Naked Guy into Ross' apartment hunting, and utilizing that to fuel Monica and Chandler's relationship, is a fun and clever way to add another layer to the long-running gag. It feels especially rewarding for long-term fans who had only ever experienced Ugly Naked Guy as a silent presence across the street. "The One Where Everybody Finds Out" finally brings Ugly Naked Guy to the forefront, and it shows that even the smallest of Friends details can have hilarious and long-lasting effects on the story.
