Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi has said that the open-world setting of the upcoming title was made to be easy for players to understand and navigate around. Hamaguchi's statement came up as development of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation continued apace.

Following the consequential events at the Forgotten Capital, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will see Cloud and the main cast deal with the looming threat of a meteor heading toward the planet. Square Enix's upcoming JRPG will also mark a first for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released on all current-gen platforms from the start rather than as a timed exclusive on PlayStation. With Square Enix sticking to a multiplatform release strategy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is one of 2027's most anticipated games.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Fights Open World Fatigue With Proper Guidance

Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already had an open-world setting that saw players explore the Gold Saucer and other locales, the upcoming entry of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will ensure that players know where to go. In an interview with Eurogamer, Hamaguchi said that he was aware of "open world fatigue" in the video game industry, as several games are out there for players to experience. Hamaguchi said that, while he has experienced open-world games that throw players out there with no direction, he believes it is important to offer proper direction to players who want to know where to go. Hamaguchi said that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation players will have all the guidance that they need when exploring new regions like Mideel and Wutai once the game arrives next spring.

To get around the map of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Cloud and the main cast will gain access to an aerial vessel called the Highwind. As one of the most iconic airships in gaming, the Highwind will allow players to select any location in the world to travel to. Once a course has been charted, the main party will parachute down to the ground. Players can also utilize fast travel to quickly return to the Highwind as needed. However, Hamaguchi said that players will have to memorize exactly where they want to drop in once the parachutes are opened, as the game's guidance system will have some limits.

Though Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also integrated Synergy actions as part of the evolving combat system, Hamaguchi said that Rebirth also forced some characters into specific combat roles. In Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Square Enix will integrate the Final Fantasy franchise's classic Job system into the mix. Dubbed the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) system, each playable character in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation can don an outfit based on their Job, like Warrior, Black Mage, and Summoner. For example, while Tifa has innate abilities reminiscent of the Monk Job, she can equip a Black Mage FITS uniform to enhance the power of offensive spells like Fire and Blizzard.

Given that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has promised some emotional story moments, a lot is riding on whether Square Enix can deliver a satisfying finale to the saga. It remains to be seen what additional details the company will share ahead of the game's launch.
