Bethesda has long been considered the king of RPGs, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios may be coming for the crown. In fact, the studio has already laid down the gauntlet, as communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling has gone on record multiple times saying they fully intend to be the new king of RPGs. Of course, much of that confidence is still held under an umbrella of humility as the team continues to emphasize that they believe they aren't quite there yet. I would personally disagree, however, as I already believe Warhorse makes a better open-world RPG than Bethesda, and my opinion could be more universally shared once the developer launches its Lord of the Rings game.

After learning that one of my favorite game developers, Warhorse Studios, is working on an open-world RPG set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, I was immediately convinced it would be great. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the developer's Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, and if its in-progress Lord of the Rings game is anything like it, it should be an automatic pre-order for me. But for myself right now, the question isn't whether it will end up being a worthwhile investment, or even when and where it will take place in Middle-earth. Instead, I'm more curious about how a fantasy game made by a developer known for grounding its worlds in real-world history will translate unrealistic things like magic, orcs, talking trees, and made-up languages.

There is little doubt that the Kingdom Come: Deliverance team, who also happens to consist of passionate LotR fans, could pull off the definitive open-world RPG that Middle-earth has always deserved, and that alone makes the idea of eventually playing it feel like the kind of thing only dreams are made of. After denying rumors last year that suggested they were working on a Lord of the Rings game, Warhorse Studios, the team behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance RPG series, has now confirmed that it is, in fact, currently developing a Middle-earth RPG. For me, this is some of the best news I've heard all year, as I am probably just as much a fan of The Lord of the Rings as I am of Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The open-world RPG formula Warhorse arguably perfected in its KCD series, now being used to bring Middle-earth to life, is something I've been dreaming of since I first heard the rumors, as I'm confident that if anyone can finally do Tolkien's world justice within the gaming space, it's them.
