The Lord of the Rings is one of the most iconic names in entertainment. The franchise started with novels from J. R. R. Tolkien before being adapted onto the big screen by Peter Jackson in one of the most critically-acclaimed film trilogies of all time. There have also been numerous The Lord of the Rings video games of varying quality.

In fact, the studio has already laid down the gauntlet, as communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling has gone on record multiple times saying they fully intend to be the new king of RPGs. Of course, much of that confidence is still held under an umbrella of humility as the team continues to emphasize that they believe they aren't quite there yet. I would personally disagree, however, as I already believe Warhorse makes a better open-world RPG than Bethesda, and my opinion could be more universally shared once the developer launches its Lord of the Rings game.

The Biggest Question Facing the New Open-World Lord of the Rings Game Isn't Timeline or Setting

Josh Cotts

Games

The Lord of the Rings

Open-World

RPG

Warhorse Studios

PC

Steam

Xbox Series X

Xbox Series S

PlayStation 5

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the developer's Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, and if its in-progress Lord of the Rings game is anything like it, it should be an automatic pre-order for me. But for myself right now, the question isn't whether it will end up being a worthwhile investment, or even when and where it will take place in Middle-earth. Instead, I'm more curious about how a fantasy game made by a developer known for grounding its worlds in real-world history will translate unrealistic things like magic, orcs, talking trees, and made-up languages.

The New Open-World Lord of the Rings Game May Be the Most Grounded Franchise RPG Yet

Josh Cotts

Games

The Lord of the Rings

Warhorse Studios

Open-World

RPG

PC

Steam

Xbox Series X

Xbox Series S

PlayStation 5
